Last November a team of North Bend Central seventh graders entered the Verizon Innovative App Challenge with their anti-bullying app “Clique Me.”

Recently, they found out their entry was named best in state for Nebraska.
Delaney Richardson helped organize a group of her friends to enter the challenge. The win was welcomed news.

“I was really nervous when Mrs. Miller told us and then we all freaked out,” she said.

There was one winner from each state from sixth through eighth grade entrants and another winner from ninth to 12th grade. The local team’s Clique Me app was discussed in detail in the Nov. 11, 2015, North Bend Eagle.

NBC seventh graders Owen Brodd, Josie Spiker, Sami McDonald, Delaney Richardson, Bethany Wiebold and Carter Richardson each won a tablet, as did math teacher Aubrey Miller who served as the group’s faculty adviser.

Miller, who volunteered to guide the team, also received a $5,000 technology grant to use in her classroom.

“Our next goal is to win the best of the regional competition,” Miller said, “and then on to the national competition where the winner receives $15,000 to have their app built with a group of MIT experts.”

The students’ next project was to create a 30-second commercial and submit it to Verizon.

“I’m proud of our video because it looked better after we did everything and everyone helped out,” Richardson said.

This video will be used to garner votes on the Verizon Innovative App Challenge page where people can vote for their favorite.

The fan favorite will also receive $15,000 and a chance to have its app built. Voting has already started and will conclude on Jan. 31.

“There will be three regional winners from each of the four regions,” Miller said. “Then one national winner and one fan favorite.”
