Three Rivers Public Health Department is getting ready for the first phase of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine within its health district. There will be different tiers, and the first tier to receive vaccines will be healthcare providers, long-term care employees and emergency medical services.

The vaccines have gone through testing that shows they are highly effective in preventing COVID-19, 3RPHD said in a release. The vaccine was approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Friday. On Dec. 8, a 90-year old woman in Coventry, England, was the first person to receive the vaccine.
In Nebraska, COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to drop. On Monday, there were 693 hospitalizations, the lowest total since Nov. 3 and down 294 since the Nov. 20 peak.

However, last week 3RPHD increased its risk dial slightly, putting it right outside the red “severe” section of the dial, due to increased cases in the area. Executive director Terra Uhing said this is likely a result of Thanksgiving gatherings.

In the week ending Monday, Dodge County saw 245 new cases, the third highest weekly total on record, though down slightly from the previous week’s count of 281.
