May 9 Big Give opportunity to supportby Mary Le Arneal Tuesday, May 9, will mark the seventh annual Big Give, a day of giving to nonprofits in the community. The North Bend Central Foundation, North Bend Area Community Foundation and the North Bend Library Foundation have benefited from this day of giving and a supportive community since the inception of Big Give. This day is a sponsored by the Fremont Area Community Foundation as a 24-hour period to encourage people to support area nonprofits. Nonprofits have to register to participate and this year there are seven such organizations in the North Bend area who are participating. In addition to those listed above, the North Bend VFW Post 8223 and the Grand Passage Sportsmen Fund joined last year and this year the North Bend Booster Club and North Bend Arboretum Foundation have signed up to give residents an opportunity to support their efforts. The North Bend Area Community Foundation receives, administers and disburses funds for community improvement and assistance in areas such as civic, cultural, educational, health and welfare needs. The North Bend Central Foundation provides opportunities for students and teachers of North Bend Central schools beyond what is provided by tax support. These opportunities include scholarships, curricular and extra-curricular enrichment activities, and professional development activities for teachers. The North Bend Library Foundation financially supports library projects, including ongoing adult programs and children’s activities. The VFW Post 8223 honors and serves veterans and the community. The Post sponsors youth organizations, promotes patriotism and other community events. The Grand Passage Sportsmen Fund was built on the history and love of the outdoors, to provide a “grand passage” of hunting and fishing to the younger generations. Through outdoor sports, local youth can learn important virtues such as patience, respect, ethics, conservation, confidence, responsibility and emotional control. North Bend Booster Club’s mission is to help make improvements that benefit NBC students, coaches, teachers and sponsors. The Booster Club’s current big project is raising funds for new digital scoreboards. One-hundred percent of the donations received from the Big Give will go toward the scoreboards. The North Bend Arboretum’s mission is to serve as an example of proper planting, pruning and maintenance of woody plants. All funds will be used to those purposes and to maintain the access trails. Donations can be made beginning May 1 if you are not able to do it May 9. There are bonus gifts sponsored by area businesses for the most donations online during a specific time period on May 9. The North Bend Area Community Foundation is trying to win prize money for having the most donors from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. The North Bend Central Foundation is trying to win prize money for having the most donors from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. There are different incentives each hour. Donations of $10 or more can be made to these organizations at www.FremontAreaBigGive.org beginning May 1 using credit cards, cash or checks. Information on how to give can be found at the web site as well as a list of all nonprofits participating. All donations are 100% tax-deductible.
