Vet park still showing effects of 2019 floodby Mary Le Arneal It’s been almost four years since the Flood of 2019 hit North Bend, but its effects can still be seen.
The flood did a number on the flower beds and sod at the Veterans Park located at Ninth and Main streets in North Bend. It Vet Park board agreed that restoration steps needed to be taken. The Veterans Park Board, met Jan. 21 at the VFW Hall, and all were in agreement that efforts needed to be taken to restore the park to its pre-flood beauty. Renee Rasmussen has been maintaining the park for 20 years now at a stipend of $500 which she did not apply for last year. The board moved to give Rasmussen the stipend for the previous year. Rasmussen expressed her desire to make a restoration plan and see it to fruition and then step down. She has contacted people about tree trimming, flower bed restoration and mowing. Steve Settles agreed to continue to do the chemical applications as a donation. Suggestions were offered of other places that may enter a bid for work at the park. Glenn Chvatal made the motion to have Siffring Landscape and Garden Center make the improvements needed in the park flower beds. Boy Scout Troop 110 has been doing the snow removal. It was discussed some way to show appreciation to them. The Wambergs would like help putting up the flags at the park for various holidays. Various organizations were suggested and will be contacted if there is interest. There are 1,087 personalized bricks in the park and 151 tiles installed. Rasmussen suggested the board look into having someone create a spread sheet for the bricks and tiles. In looking at ways to fund raise for the park, it was suggested that the local mortuary be contacted about having envelopes for donations as well as putting information about purchasing a brick or tile in memory of a veteran. It was also questioned if the Color Guard received donations for their service. Rasmussen said that the last memorial donation was received Oct. 28, 2022. All present committee members agreed to stay on the board. Attending were chairman Doug Wamberg, treasurer Renee Rasmussen, secretary Nancy Strauss and members Dale Kinney, Connie Wamberg, Mark Johnson, Rollie Otte, Eileen Chvatal and Glenn Chvatal. Several veterans’ names were offered up and will be contacted for board membership. Any Veteran interested in serving on the park board is asked to contact a board members. The next meeting was set for Saturday, March 18 at 9 a.m. at the VFW Hall.
