The North Bend Central school board heard summary of the first year of girls wrestling at NBC from activities director Jon Baehr.

Baehr reported that there were three high school girls who participated and three junior high girls at NBC. In the state participation has grown from 398 last year to 779 this year.

“It is a growing sport,” Baehr said. “Scheduling was more difficult than anticipated. There was a separate schedule for just girls meets.”

Baehr said that the time required of the coaching is split too often with practice and competition schedules. There is a stipend coach (as in other sports), Holley Booze, just for the girls, but it is felt that a full-time assistant coach was needed in addition to the stipend coach.

“We want to send a clear message for our athletes and for our community in regards to helping grow a new program,” Baehr said.

The board voted for the addition of a girls wrestling coach while maintaining the stipend coach.

High school principal Brenda Petersen reported that with the addition of graduation requirements for financial literacy and computer technology classes, business teacher Stacy Ray will not be able to teach algebra classes, also a requirement for graduation. The board voted to hire a new math teacher to teach at the junior-senior level.

At the last meeting the purchase of a new bus was approved. The transportation committee was given the task of deciding on the final purchase. The board approved the purchase of a 2024 Freightliner-Thomas 59-passenger bus for $113,950. It will be delivered April 1.
