Board to survey staff, patrons

The North Bend Central Board of Education heard from two companies regarding climate and needs assessment surveys at its June 12 meeting.

After their presentations the board voted to hire Dennison Bohia from Psychometric Solutions. Bohia talked about doing a survey four to six weeks after the beginning of school after the board has input as to what questions to ask. Both faculty, staff and district patrons would take part in the survey. He would have results back to board in two to three weeks. The information will be used by the board to make strategic plans.

The meeting began with public comment. Holly Hild spoke to the board about having baseball as a school sport. Michelle Cummings spoke about the need for improved handicap accessibility at the softball field. As per policy, the board made no comment at this time.

In reviewing the bills, interim superintendent Galen Boldt reported that the General Fund Special Money Market had earned $5,782.

The board voted to approve a bid from Midwest Door and Hardware for $20,823 for inside-locking doors for the high and middle schools. This was recommended by safety auditor Kevin Kavan during a safety survey. There will be a push-button lock on the inside and key lock on the outside.

The board approved purchasing additional carpet for multiple classrooms not carpeted during the 2014 remodel. Jason Hellbusch’s bid of $55,056 was accepted.

The NBC Class of 2019 requested to place a bench on the walking trail in memory of classmate Callie Witt. The board approved this.

High/middle school principal Brenda Petersen spoke about changes in the student handbook. Graduation requirements will change with the addition of a business requirement. Initially five credit hours for personal finance will be required. Beginning with those graduating in 2027, 10 hours of business will be required, five hours in personal finance and five in computer science.

The requirements for water bottles also changed. Water taken into the classroom needs to be in a container or bottle that can be sealed. The requirement that a water bottle be clear has been removed.
The board finished by expressing gratitude to Boldt for his service this past year. His last day is June 20. Patrick Ningen will take over as the superintendent at that time.

The next board meeting is July 10, 7:30 p.m., at the high school.
