The North Bend Central Board of Education met Aug. 12 and the principals reported on the beginning of school Aug. 15.

Tessie Beaver said that the theme for the elementary school is “Adventures in Learning. North Bend Elementary, Where Every Student’s Story Begins!”

At the high school and middle school the theme is “Be Someone’s Hero” with posters noting heroes in different academic area placed around the school. The students will start out the day with an assembly in the gymtorium (old gym) with an activity planned.

The coaches for the year will remain the same with a few changes. Maci Hunke will be the head softball coach with Marissa Hunke and John Brackle the assistant coaches. Landin Pribnow will be helping with junior high football with Rachel Kaup assisting Neely Vavrina in junior high volleyball.

Superintendent Patrick Ningen reported on the special legislative session saying that he did not think it would effect NBC much this school year since we are so close to beginning the year.

“We will have to wait for the evaluations to come out before we can set a tax request,” Ningen said.

The board updated the student fees handbook earlier this year. The only change that had to do now was to delete powderpuff football because that event is not held any more. Updated Nutrition Services Income Eligibility Guidelines to determine free and reduced lunch eligibility are included. The handbook is available on the school website.

The board approved renewing the School Resource Officer program with the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department. NBC will again share with Logan View at a cost of $27,813.24 for the year. Nick White has been appointed to the post. He will visit the elementary and high/middle schools starting Aug. 12.

“It’s a great resource to have,” Ningen said. “We’ve seen success with the SRO building relationships with the students.”

Elementary head custodian Galen Uhing spoke to the board about having the elementary school grounds professionally landscaped. He has had a representative of a nursery look at the area and he gave some suggestions but no estimate. After discussion the board agreed the landscaping needed to be done. Uhing said he would look for grants to help with cost and will get estimates from multiple businesses. He said installing landscaping could take place over a number of years.
