Board views remodel, looks for IT coordinatorby Mary Le Arneal The North Bend Central Board of Education began its Oct. 7 meeting hearing about the process of paying for and doing the remodel of the family and consumer science lab. Alyssa Nelson, Katie Wright and Brenda Petersen gave the board a tour of the updated area. The board heard from the transportation committee about new vehicles to purchase. After some discussion it was decided to buy a small 14-passenger bus to replace the vans they have. Freightliner has said if they order now for September delivery NBC can pay at that time, letting the board put it in next year’s budget. Already in this year’s budget is a full-size bus and full-size SUV. The position of IT coordinator has only received one application, and that applicant was deemed unqualified. Gabby Schwanebeck and Summer Scott have discussed with Superintendent Patrick Ningen how they could fill the position. They are presently the IT assistant and front office coordinator at NBC, respectively. They have been filling the position since former IT coordinator Jim Cody left. The board approved them continuing. A parent has asked about students lettering in non-school activities such as trap shooting. Ningen will check with other schools to see what they are doing. The parent will present at the November board meeting. Tessie Beaver reported that the elementary school had a presentation from local firefighters during Fire Prevention Week. The students will have their Fall Festival Oct. 25. Many field trips are planned. Significant cost increases were noted. Grueber said the school could look at other insurance, only insure the larger, costlier buildings or other options and cancel this policy. The board approved the policy he presented and will have Ningen look into other options. The board discussed the Early Retirement Incentive Program policy for the 2025-2026 school year. They talked about the benefits of teachers telling the board they will retire in January so the school can start seeking a replacement. Currently teachers do not have to notify the school of retirement until April. It was decided to approve the ERIP for one year with a $12,500 payment to retiring teachers. The board approved the option enrollment numeric resolution for the 2025-2026 school year. Beaver said there were only 26 in preschool, so there would be room for more next year in kindergarten.
