North Bend Central was one of 100 schools in the inaugural class of Healthy Home Team partners. Each will receive a $500 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska to support health and well-being in their communities. In November, BCBSNE will announce one recipient of a $5,000 bonus grant to ignite their vision for a healthier community.
The $5,000 recipient will be chosen by a panel of BCBSNE judges based on the impact, feasibility and creativity of the school’s ideas for the funds.
Kyrsten Mottl is the business manager at NBC and deals with BCBSNE for insurance. She received an e-mail about the program and filled out the grant application.
North Bend Central is proud to promote a healthy life-style and support the well-being of students, families and our community, Mottl wrote.
She told how every student grades Pre-K to eighth grade has an opportunity to take physical education as well as recess at the elementary level. The P.E. program teaches students ways to be active in a fun way with games and sports. The freshman class has P.E. three days a week while the other two days they have a health class.
“This allows students to understand the importances of nutrition and different physical activities in their lives,” Mottl said. “High school students can also take a weightlifting class to show them the benefits of adding weights into their lives.”
The school nurses perform the standard eyesight and hearing tests on certain age groups each year. Notes will be sent home to parents if anything was noticed by one of the nurses and it needs to be looked into further. The nurses also partner with the local dentist to have quick dental checks done for students at certain levels.
“Both of these activities provide health checkups for students who might not have access to yearly checkups,” Mottl said.
She wrote about the cooks providing students a well-balanced, nutritious lunch and breakfast every day. A fully stocked salad bar always has options for fresh vegetables and fruit for students and staff to enjoy.
