Auditorium kitchen getting redone to fix leak

Work on the city auditorium’s kitchen is under way.

A leak was found in a drain pipe under the kitchen floor. The pipe and other infrastructure in the kitchen are original to the auditorium’s 1939 construction.

The island in the kitchen has been removed as has the cupboards on the south wall. It was unclear if any more floor will have to be dug up, depending on what is found under the island.

Councilman Alex Legge, who is the department chair for the auditorium, said any water lines they find when digging up the floor will be replaced as well.

A new island will be built to replace the old one. The cabinets will likely be replaced with a countertop, Legge said. The cabinets held coffee cups, china and table settings that were no longer used and have been thrown out. The silverware was donated to the Gathering Place, formerly the Senior Center.

In other city council business from its April 15 meeting:

• The city activated its TextMyGov system this past week with a test text message Thursday around 10 a.m.
The system will be used to share timely information on city issues, events or emergencies. Most cell phones in the area were signed up automatically. To opt out of the messages, users can text “Stop” to 91896. If you didn’t get the test message but would like to receive notifications, text “North Bend” to 91896.

• The city approved a liquor license for Stix’s Bowling Den, formerly the Tiger Pin. Stix’s was also approved to serve as a host for keno.

• The council approved a new contract with PeopleService to operate the city’s water and sewer systems for $19,130 per month starting in July.

• Ordinance 606 was given a second of three readings. It will raise water and sewer rates in North Bend $3 a month for water and $3 a month for sewer.
