North Bend sign goes up at highway crossingby Nathan Arneal North Bend has marked its spot on Highway 30 with a sign bearing the town’s name that was erected last week. A donor reception and public illumination ceremony is planned for next week.
The sign, which measures more than 31 feet tall, becomes the most recognizable landmark on the expressway that opened last year between Rogers and Fremont. River rock and some larger rocks will be spread around the sign’s base by members of the Purcell Initiative in the coming days. The Purcell Initiative was the driving force behind the sign, with major grants or funds provided by the North Bend Area Community Foundation, Fremont Area Community Foundation, North Bend Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of North Bend. Maple Creek Poultry donated the land and dozens of other donors contributed to the project, which is expected to come in at just over $100,000. Invitations to a reception for the donors and grantors have been e-mailed out. The Purcell Initiative will host the reception at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Brews in the Bend. The electricity and wiring to light the sign at nights is being finalized this week. The sign will be lit for the first time at a public illumination ceremony April 30 at 8 p.m. Parking for the ceremony will be on the west side of Highway 79 just south of the sign.
