North Bend Central Elementary principal Tessie Beaver has submitted her resignation to the NBC Board of Education. The board will take action on it at its March meeting.

The board spent quite a bit of time at its Feb. 10 meeting discussing the upcoming preschool classes. Beaver said she has heard from 40 in-district parents with children eligible for Little Tiger Preschool, with all but four having their paperwork in. There are 17 option enrollment preschoolers, one a staff member’s child and five who have siblings at NBC already that would be eligible to enroll if there is room. There will be a need next year for three preschool classes and three kindergarten classes.

The board discussed ways to handle the increase in students.

Beaver talked about not only the tight classroom but lunch and gym time.

“It gets complicated,” she said.

The board discussed costs and ways to handle the increased students. It may need to increase class divisions and add more staff.

The board will talk to Bob Soukup of the Carson West Povondra Architects for ideas.

The meeting included appreciation for faculty, staff and students who are invested in the schools and helping with events. Those mentioned included the Alyssa Nelson’s culinary classes who prepared and served lunch for the Chamber of Commerce meeting Feb. 3.

“It was outstanding for the first time putting something like that together,” board member and chamber member Nick Emanuel said.

Taylor Creps, Ashtin Quota-Yeuter and Carter Dvorak were recognized for their state bowling experience. Kelsey Vyhlidal spoke about her experiencing coaching bowling for the first time.

Wyatt Schwanabeck and Joe Blaha were commended for their football and basketball games broadcasts.

“We get lots of complimentary e-mails,” high school principal Brenda Petersen said. “It is delightful.”

Speech coach Liz Eberspacher, assistant coach Carie Schmidt and Ross Lafleur were commended on the successful meet they ran at NBC.
In the activities director’s report, Jon Baehr complimented the faculty, staff and students who helped with the speech and wrestling meets held at NBC.

Petersen said that there are still plenty of activities going on at school and elsewhere for the students to be involved in.

There are two student teachers at NBC this semester. Shaleigh Schall from Midland is with Aubrey Miller in the math department, and Torrin Boyer is an agricultural leadership major at UNL who is with DJ Mottl and assisting with junior high girls basketball.
