E-bike safety discussed at board meetingby Jason Futch During a meeting of the North Bend Central Board of Education on Aug. 10, Superintendent Patrick Ningen addressed a proposal to consider stronger governance on the use of electric bicycles on the school campus. Prior to the consideration, Ningen said that he and other staff members have told students in the past not to operate the e-bikes along the arboretum trail. Now he wants to restrict e-bike operations at both NBC and North Bend Elementary to operators with driver licenses only. “Personally, the speed at which they can travel and the lack of wearing a helmet scares the heck out of me,” Ningen said. Incidents involving e-bikes across the state were also discussed to help strengthen the argument for this restriction. Ningen said he plans to work with the principals from both schools and SRO Deputy Kerrion Faulkner to draft language for the proposed policy to bring before the board in the future.
