NBC to provide stipends for NBE reading teachers' training

During the North Bend Central Board of Education meeting on July 13, superintendent Patrick Ningen provided the board with updates, which included a plan to compensate teachers who have been required to undertake extra training under the Nebraska Reading Improvement Act.

Ningen said that North Bend Elementary reading teachers have been busy taking the training through the Nebraska Educational Services Unit and nearby colleges that are offering college credit to the them at the teacher’s expense. The college credit allows those teachers advancement in the school’s salary schedule.

Because of the extensive training outside of the classroom, Ningen said he wanted to offer a compensation structure under the negotiated agreement at a stipend rate of $25 per hour.

“I just want to make it fair for our staff,” he said. “To be honest, it was a lot more than they anticipated.”

Teachers taking the course for college credit would pay their own tuition and only be paid the hourly rate for their prep and student-contact hours completed outside of regular class time, unless covered by a grant. Teachers choosing not to take the course for credit would be paid the $25 hourly rate for their entire time commitment, including both class sessions and outside project work.

Ningen told the Eagle that he plans to pay the stipend up to a certain number of hours, which he plans to set later this week after he collects more information.

“I want to make sure its enough to cover their time,” he said.
