Busse announces retirement after 28 years as city clerkby Nathan Arneal For the first time in 28 years, North Bend will soon be getting a new city clerk. At the July 21 city council meeting, Theresa Busse surprised the council by announcing her impending retirement and gave a three-month notice. Busse, who turned 70 in February, said she and her husband Bruce, who is turning 70 in October, decided to retire together. Bruce Busse turned in his resignation to Valmont the next day. Theresa Busse said the decision came with some reluctance. “(Bruce) would never believe I was going to retire because I really like to work,” she said. “I’m not looking forward to being retired. I look forward to Monday every week. I want to go to work.” The decision came now, Busses said, so she and outgoing mayor Rod Scott would not be leaving at the same time. Scott’s term is up Dec. 1, while Busse’s retirement date is set for October 21. The employment ad placed by the city, which can be found on page 9 of this issue, gives an application deadline of July 31. Busse said the council hopes to make a hire at its Aug. 4 meeting, giving the new hire more than two months to train alongside Busse.
