Summary:
The North Bend Ambush were poised to upset undefeated Howells in Sunday’s Farmland Basketball League semifinal game, but victory slipped through their paws. Howells was able to keep its perfect record intact with a come-from-behind overtime win against North Bend.
After a back-and-forth first half, North Bend took a 60-50 lead with 10 minutes left when Chris Armstrong tipped in an offensive rebound for the Ambush.
Howells quickly got back into the game with traditional 3-point plays by Mike Bayer and Matt Eikmeier on back-to-back offensive trips.
After Tyler Baumert made two free throws, North Bend led 76-72 with 43 seconds left. Donnie Morrison drove for Howells, drawing a foul and sinking two free throws of his own with 39 seconds remaining.
Howells fouled an Ambush player, who missed both free throws.
Trailing by two with the seconds ticking away, Howells missed a shot from the corner, but Justin Sindelar was there for the offensive rebound and put it back in, tying the game with two seconds left and forcing overtime.
Howells owned the extra period, scoring first, then making enough free throws to win 84-76.
Sindelar led the defending champions with 23 points, while Eikmeier added 18. Brent Karnatz scored 22 for North Bend and John Wesch contributed 18 points.
