Howells Hoosiers vs. Dodge GamecocksChampionship game - Feb. 18, 2018, at Howells-Dodge HS, Howells
Summary: It is the third league title for the Howells Hoosiers in the past four years and fourth overall. The early going was close, as Dodge took a 15-14 lead on an elbow jumper by Brian Tomasek, but the Hoosiers responded with a 10-0 run capped by Mike Bayer picking up a loose ball and taking it in for an uncontested layup with 10:27 left to go in the first half. Dodge answered with six straight points, and a coast-to-coast drive by Bryan Ruzek brought the Gamecocks within 3 points. Dodge, who struggled with outside shooting all night against the Hoosiers’ hounding defense, had three chances at 3-pointers that would have tied the game, but couldn’t connect. Another transition layup by Ruzek made the score 31-30 in Howells’ favor, but then Sam Schlautman began to heat up for Howells. In the final four minutes before halftime, Schlautman knocked down four 3-pointers, including back-to-back treys within 7 seconds of each other. The barrage boosted Howells to a 48-39 halftime lead. The Hoosier lead hung around 12 points for much of the second half until 3’s by Justin Sindelar and Tyler Brester and a post bucket by Luke Hegemann opened up an 80-60 lead with 7:38 remaining. Howells got a balanced scoring effort in the win, led by Schlautman’s 21 points and Hegemann’s 18.
