Summary:

The Wisner Beef claimed their first Farmland Basketball League championship, winning the Golden Tractor Trophy Sunday with a 81-67 win over defending champion Howells.

Wisner got things going early with a 14-0 run that gave them a 30-13 lead with 8 minutes, 30 seconds left in the first half.

The Beef held a 13-point lead 4 minutes before halftime when the Hoosiers made a late run to nearly erase the deficit, boosted by a pair of 3-pointers by Luke Hegemann. With one second left on the clock until intermission, Josh DeMurs made 1-of-2 free throws for Howells to cap a 13-0 Hoosier run.

Wisner led 39-38 at halftime.

Howells made a few baskets early in the second half to make it a 1-point game again but couldn’t get over the hump.

Soon the Wisner town team grew its lead again, with a floater in the lane by Trevor Cyboron pushing the Beef lead to 12 points with 8:37 left in the game.

Four points from Hegemann cut the Wisner lead to 72-65 with 3:31 left, but that’s as close as Howells got as the Beef closed out the victory.

Wisner becomes the first team other than Howells or Dodge to win the FBL championship since 2016.
Cyboron led the champions with 22 points while Colby Heller contributed 20.

Hegemann scored 23 for Howells, who was playing its fifth straight FBL final. Josh Brester added 12 points and Brady Brester 11.
