Summary: In contrast to the regular season game played three weeks earlier, a 16-point Arlington win, this time it was the Howells town team that was hot from the 3-point line.

After a back-and-forth first half, a quick burst of points allowed Howells to pull away in the second half of Sunday’s Farmland Basketball League championship game. The Hoosiers won their sixth Golden Tractor Trophy with an 82-65 win over Arlington.

Howells, who entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed, jumped to a 7-0 lead over the third-seeded Arlington Armadillos. The homestanding ‘Dillos pulled even on a reverse layup by Jalen Hueser. That was quickly followed by a Hoosier turnover on the ensuing inbound pass, leading to a Hueser 3-pointer that gave Arlington its first lead at 24-21 with 6:30 to go in the first half.

Howells worked back to take a 39-31 lead at halftime. The Hoosier advantage grew to 10 points early in the second half after four straight free throws by Brady Brester and Connor Blum. The Armadillos answered with four points of their own, cutting the lead to 50-44 on a basket by Connor Eurek.

Then Josh Brester took over for Howells, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers and drawing a timeout from Arlington. A minute later he added a third straight 3. The parade of 3’s started a 13-0 run for Howells, with 11 of those points coming from Brester. Suddenly a 6-point game was knocking on the door of 20, and the Hoosiers led 63-44 with 8:27 left.

Arlington went on one last run, cutting the deficit to 11 after a 3 by Clint Belina and a bucket by Trevor Toebben, but it was too little too late.

Brester led Howells with 24 points, with Luke Hegemann adding 16. Nick Engelbart 17 points led the way for Arlington. The game marked the 13th time Howells has appeared in the Farmland championship game while Arlington was making its first appearance.
