At the Oct. 13 North Bend Central school board meeting, the board heard from two construction companies who submitted proposals for the for the restroom and concession stand project at the football field and track.

After much discussion with the representatives and amongst themselves, the board decided to go with Elk Creek Construction LLC with a bid of $580,256.83. Construction will start after the last football game and be done by Aug. 20, 2026. This construction includes the moving of the present concession building 550 feet to the north on a foundation school staff builds.

In other construction, the roof on the old gym is being replaced. When removing the old roof, a vapor barrier was found under the installation barrier. Replacing this was not in the bid. There were two barriers in previously, but it was decided with less large crowd usage, one half inch cover board would be sufficient as a vapor barrier for an additional $39,348. It is temperature sensitive to installation so it has already been ordered and it was due to arrive Oct. 15. Part of this cost may be recovered at the end of the project if no additional changes in the original bid are needed.

Steve Grueber made a presentation to the board about insurance and it was approved for $238,022.

The board approved the replacement of door entrance systems and camera at the middle and high school. All the doors at the elementary school are working well.

Superintendent Patrick Ningen shared with the board that he is working on the community connection teams. Each team would have five to seven members consisting of a board member, teachers, classified staff, students, parents and community members with quarterly meetings to discuss topics Ningen would propose.

Middle/high school principal Brenda Peterson told the board about all the activities upcoming to give students a chance to look at opportunities after graduation. She also told how the staff appreciates the one day off a month to have a full-day in-service to get needed items accomplished.

Petersen is taking part in a leadership learning walk with other principals. She is going to Yutan to walk around their school and then the Yutan principal will come here and walk around with Petersen to give her a new set of eyes on NBC.

The school applied for and received a Perkins Grant through ESU 2 for a La Marzocco Linea mini espresso machine to be used by the sixth grade class to start a small business selling to teachers on occasion.
