Ronald L. Swanson, Fremont, Dec. 31, age 73

Ronald L. Swanson of Fremont, died Dec. 31, 2011, at the Fremont Area Medical Center. He was born Aug. 15, 1938, to Leonard and Florice (Gantz) Swanson of Omaha.
Ronald grew up at Omaha. He served in the U.S.Navy Jan. 1956 to Jan. 1959. After his discharge, he returned to Omaha and worked with his father doing sheet metal work. Later he worked as a maintenance mechanic for various businesses in Omaha. He moved to Bay Cliff, Texas, in Nov. 2006 and returned to Nebraska in 2010 and settled in Fremont.
Ronald married Virginia Rynazewski at Omaha. She died March 22, 2010.
He is survived by sons Michael Swanson, Scott Swanson both of Fremont, Mark Swanson of Scribner, and Shawn (Pam) Swanson of Bay Cliff, Texas; daughters Theresa Swanson of North Bend, Dawn Swanson of Omaha; sister, Nancy (Jack) Parsons of Omaha; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Memorial Service is at 2 p.m. on Jan. 5 at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont with the Rev. Michael McGregor of First United Methodist Church in Fremont officiating. There is no viewing or visitation. The United States flag will be folded and presented by members of the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W.Post 854 and American Legion Post 20. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend at a later date. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Roger A. Wilton, Superior, Dec. 30, age 68

Roger A. Wilton Sr., of Superior died Dec. 30 in Wathena, Kan. after a car crash.
Roger was born Feb. 11, 1943, in Superior to Clarence and Ila (Rogers) Wilton. Roger was a member of the class of 1961 at Superior High School. He marriage Elinor Lynn McFarland on June 18, 1963, in Superior. The couple lived their entire married life on Lynn’s family farm in rural Superior. Roger and Lynn were the recipients of two Ak-Sar-Ben Pioneer Family Farm Awards. Roger also worked as a ringman for Gale Mikkelsen Real Estate and Auction, and raised purebred Norwegian Elkhound dogs.
Roger was a member of the Olive Hill Church in rural Kansas, where he served as a deacon, a trustee, and an usher. He was a founding member of the Borderline Tractor Pullers Association. Roger was a member of the Farmers Union, the Simic Roller-skating Rink Association, and the Jaycees.
Survivors include wife Lynn of Superior; daughter Shirley (Kragh) Johnson of Prague; son Roger (Kristen) Wilton, Jr. of Gresham; six grandchildren; brothers Harold (Lorna) Wilton of South Superior, Kan. and Gilbert (Roberta) Wilton of Denver, Colo.; and sister Colleen (Dewayne) Barleen of St. Paul.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 20 with interment at Bostwick Cemetery in Superior.
In lieu of flowers the family has established a memorial fund.

Mary (Wernsman) Satorie, Phoenix, Dec. 28, age 79

Mary Frances Satorie died Dec. 28, 2011, with many family members by her side, in Phoenix, Ariz.
The daughter of George and Agnes (Finegan) Wernsman, Mary was born June 4, 1932, in Fremont. She grew up on her parents’ farm, attending country schools in Dodge County through the eighth grade and graduating from North Bend High School in 1950.
On Aug. 18, 1951, Mary married Don Satorie in North Bend. They settled in North Bend where she was a school teacher, homemaker, and worked several part time jobs. They later owned and operated the Red Carpet Lounge for many years.
She was a long-time member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. During the winter months, she enjoyed traveling to Arizona to spend time in the sun, close to her daughter Jeanne, granddaughter Kim, and their families.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Don; two sons, Bill of Topeka, Kansas., and Tom of Boise, Idaho; four daughters; Jeanne (John) Haines of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary (Randy) Kaiser of David City, Dee Ann Satorie of Fremont, Julie (Jay) Crome of San Antonio, Texas; sister Nancy (Norb) Staley of North Bend; grandchildren Kim and Mark Palombo, Cary and Staci Mayo, Matt and Jessica Grudowski, Jeff and Brigid Albert, Matt and Shannon Albert, Lynn and Dan Minarick, Teri and Jason McKinzie, Amanda and Rob Lynch, Rebecca Satorie, and Alexei Dutch. She also leaves behind 10 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Agnes (Finegan) Wernsman, and one grandson, Joshua Satorie.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Jan. 4 at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-8 PM with a Vigil Service at 7 PM all at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend.
Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery of North Bend immediately following the services.
Memorials are suggested to the North Bend - Morse Bluff Veterans Memorial Park.

Diane (Emanuel) Anderson, Lincoln, Dec. 27, age 48

Diane Marie Anderson of Lincoln died Dec. 27, after a life of struggle with Friedreich’s ataxia.
Diane was born in West Point on Sept. 20, 1963, to Jerome and Lorraine (Rolf) Emanuel of North Bend. She graduated from North Bend Central High School in 1982 and married Gary Anderson of Fremont on Sept. 30, 1983.
Diane is survived by her husband, Gary; daughter Brittany of Lincoln; mother, Lorraine Emanuel of North Bend; mother and father-in-law, Mary and Charles Berner of Fremont; brothers and sisters, Debra Hoppe of Lincoln, Donna (Michael) Buell of Omaha; Keith Emanuel of North Bend; Jeff (Stacy) Emanuel of Lincoln, and 12 nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by father, Jerome Emanuel.
Funeral services were Dec. 30 at the Lincoln Berean Church.

Gladys (Furstenau) Hasemann, Scribner, Dec. 13, age 85

Gladys A. Hasemann of Scribner died Dec. 13 at the Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont.
Gladys was born Aug. 17, 1926, south of Scribner to Charles and Ida (Hoge) Furstenau. Gladys married Fred Hasemann, Jr. on Feb. 4, 1945, at United Lutheran Church in Scribner. After their marriage they farmed northeast of Scribner. The couple moved to the Elkhorn Valley Villa in Scribner in January of this year. Gladys was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church north of Hooper.
Survivors include husband Fred of Scribner; daughter Lisa (John) Stockamp of Scribner; sons Keith (Connie) Hasemann of Scribner, Carroll (Mary) Hasemann of Scribner, Kevin (Diane) Hasemann of Scribner and Kenneth (Sandy) Hasemann of North Bend; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and sister Norma Jean (LeRoy) Marquardt of Calif.
Funeral services were Dec. 17 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church north of Hooper, with burial at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Shirley (Best) Cohn, Nebraska City, Dec. 9, age 84

Shirley Mae Cohn of Nebraska City died Dec. 9 at her home.
Shiley was born Oct. 1, 1927, to Hugh Allen and Cleda Fern Best in North Bend. She graduated from North Bend High School in 1954 as class valedictorian. She worked at Omaha Athletic Club until she married Glen E. Cohn on Aug. 20, 1954, in Nebraska City.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Glen, of Nebraska City; sons Jay C. (Debra) Cohn of Lenexa, Kan., Glen E. Cohn Jr. of Watson, Mo., Gary A. (Teralyn) Cohn of Sedgwick, Kan., William D. (Brenda J.) Cohn of Lincoln and Chad L. (Tammy) Cohn of Waverly; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother Bob Best of Omaha; and sister Beverly Snyder of North Bend.
Shirley will be cremated and no services will be held, with burial at a later date in Lincoln’s Wyuka Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in care of Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Fae (Soverign) Wehner, Fremont, Dec. 6, age 81

Fae M. Wehner died Dec. 6 in Fremont. The funeral was Dec. 9 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont, with burial at Calvary Cemetry in Omaha.
Fae Soverign was born Dec. 10, 1929, in Omaha to Margaret (Hareesty) and Clinton Soverign, Her mother later married Amos Henderson. Fae married Robert Wehner on June 23, 1951. He survives.

Irene (Slosser) Hines, Morse Bluff, Dec. 3, age 85

Irene J. Hines of Morse Bluff died Dec. 3 at Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont.
Irene was born March 27, 1926, in rural Bruno to James and Stella (Hanis) Slosser. She grew up on the family farm near Bruno and attended rural school near Abie, and graduated from Prague High School in 1944. She worked at the Nebraska Ordnance Plant in Mead during WWII. Irene married Edward J. “Bud” Hines on Feb. 23, 1946, in Little Rock, Ark. where Bud was serving in the Army. After his discharge in 1947 they settled in Morse Bluff where they farmed.
Irene was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Morse Bluff. Survivors include her husband; sons Ron Hines of Morse Bluff and Keith Hines of Fremont; sisters Stella Mihulka of Omaha and Sally (Gene) Bartunek of David City; three grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren.
A private funeral service was held Dec. 6 with Father Jeremy Hazuka officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.

Jeanne M. Lux, Omaha, Nov. 30, age 81

Jeanne M. Lux died Nov. 30 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. She was born May 1, 1930, in North Bend to Maude and Paul Lux.
Jeanne graduated from North Bend High School in 1948. She attended St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1951, and worked at St. Joseph Hospital until 1962. Jeanne was the nursing supervisor for the operating room at Children’s Hospital in Omaha from 1962 until her retirement in 1994. Throughout her career, Jeanne was active in the leadership of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, and was named Operating Room Nurse of the Year. In 1993 she received the Spirit of Children Award from Children’s Hospital. After retiring, Jeanne volunteered her time at Boys Town for 10 years and received the Boys Town Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Jeanne is survived by brother Dean T. (Marlene) Lux, of North Bend; nieces and nephews, Terry (Linda) O’Hare of Omaha, Patty O’Hare (Ron Durand) of Chesapeake, Va., Amy (Steve) Settles and Dean P. (Karen) Lux both of North Bend, Peggy Babcock of Omaha, Susan (Mike) Wakefield of Kennard, 14 great-nieces and nephews, and six great-great nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Jeanne’s dedication to medical education and research, she donated her body to the Anatomical Board of the State of Nebraska, to further the education of Creighton University health sciences students. A Memorial Service will be held Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Omaha.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Poor Clare Sisters of Omaha, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Omaha, or Mount Michael Benedictine Abbey and School, Elkhorn.

Rudolph was born in rural Rogers, Nebraska, to Joseph and Annie (Blazek) Ruzicka. He attended school at District 49, rural Rogers. He farmed the original homestead and in the Rogers area until moving to Schuyler and retiring from farming in 1999. He enjoyed working outdoors, bohemian music, dancing, and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Libbie E. Blazek and Anna M. Horak; brothers, Joseph E. and Adolph F.; niece, LaVaine (Ruzicka) Collins; nephews, Bob Ruzicka and Donald Ruzicka.
Rudolph is survived by his special friend, LaVina Falke of Schuyler; nieces: Marilyn (Ruzicka) Lusche of Columbus, NE, Donna (Horak) Meredith of Wichita, KS, Linda (Horak) Varejcka of Hickman, NE; nephews: Frank Blazek of Schuyler and Douglas Ruzicka of Fairbury, Nebr.

Don E. Ring, North Bend, Nov. 27, age 71

Don Eldon Ring, 71, of North Bend passed away on Nov. 27 surrounded by family and friends in hospice care at his home. Funeral services will be held on Dec. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the Community of Christ Church in Walthill. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill.
Don was born on March 2, 1940, in Walthill, the son of Alvin and Truth (Vassar) Ring, and spent most of his adult life there. At an early age he worked construction, then for Campbell Manufacturing for 15 years, and then 27 years on the Thurston County bridge crew.
Don married Lorraine Greenfield in 1981. They later divorced. In 2001, he married Mary Samuelson. They made their home in North Bend.
Don is survived by his wife Mary; step-sons Shane (Tina) Greenfield of Wisner, Jay (Shannon) Greenfield of Walthill, Brad (Kim) Samuelson of Shawnee, Kan., Jeff (Jill) Samuelson of Liberty, Mo.; step-daughters Paula Hines of North Bend, Tammy (Craig) Wise of Harrison, Mo.; brothers Stanley (Lucile) Ring, Rick Palmer, both of South Sioux City; sister, Oma (Ralph) Rogers of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Gus) Palmer, Elaine Palmer, both of South Sioux City; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ted Zeleny, Schuyler, Nov. 25, age 94

Theodore Zeleny, 94, of Schuyler, died Nov. 25 at the Golden Living Center, Schuyler.
Funeral services were Nov. 26 at Kracl Funeral Chapel in Schuyler with burial at Schuyler Cemetery with military honors.
Theodore Zeleny was born March 25, 1917, in Abie to Charles and Frantiska (Pecha) Zeleny. He graduated from Schuyler High School and served in the Air Force from 1942-1945 as a clerk/typist.
On Sept. 25, 1945, he married Jean Munford in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. They made their home in Schuyler where Ted worked for Oberg Hatchery, Zelenda Produce, Gaeth Hatchery, at the Schuyler grade school, drove a school bus, as a security guard at Cargill Meat Solutions in Schuyler.
He is survived by daughters Sandra Limbach of Columbus, Sarah (Rick) Hollandsworth of Lincoln, Tammy (Owen) Lovell of Columbus; twin sons Gregory Zeleny of Billings, Mont., Gary Zeleny of Schuyler, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Tiny McNally, Schuyler, Nov. 24, age 88

Leonard “Tiny” McNally, 88, of Schuyler, died Nov. 24 in Schuyler. Funeral services were Nov. 28 St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Divine Mercy Parish, in Schuyler with the Rev. Andrew Syring officiating. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Schuyler with military honors.
Memorials are suggested for Holy Cross Cemetery.
Tiny was one of twin sons born Oct. 27, 1923, in the Dublin community north of Rogers to Harry and Hannah (Scanlon) McNally. He attended School District 11 through the eighth grade. Tiny served in the Air Force from 1946-1947.
On April 22, 1952, he married Agnes Strudl at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tabor. They lived and farmed north of Rogers until moving to Schuyler in 1974. He owned and operated Tiny’s Bar in
Schuyler from 1979 to 1985. Tiny was a County Committee Member of the ASCS, former 4-H leader and also clerked for Heckman and DeBower Auctioneers. He was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Schuyler American Legion and the Last Man’s Club.
Tiny is survived by his wife, Agnes of Schuyler; daughters Linda (Galen) Juranek of Linwood, Marci (Tom) Behmer of Hastings, Joyce (Bruce) Mifflin of Seward and Ann Ladwig of Schuyler; sons Bob (Jan) McNally of Raymond, Jim (Wanda) McNally of Pleasantdale; 22 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Mildred McNally of Schuyler.

Virgil V. Bendlin, North Bend, Nov. 23, age 91

Virgil V. Bendlin of North Bend died Nov. 23 at Arbor Manor Living Center.
Virgil was born to Willhelm and Anna (Pohl) Bendlin on Nov. 2, 1920, in Manson, Iowa. He grew up at Dickens, Iowa, and was a 1938 graduate of Okoboji Consolidated School at Okoboji. He served in the Navy during WWII.
He married Jeanne Giep on Oct. 22, 1946, at Jackson, Minn. The couple moved to Sutherland, Iowa, where Virgil farmed from 1946 to 1975. They lived at Spencer, Iowa, and Weslaco, Texas, for 10 years each before moving to North Bend in 2000. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend, American Legion of Sutherland and the Lions Club in Spencer.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Fremont; daughters, Naomi Sue (Jim) Dodge of North Bend, Sally Jo Jean (Russ) Bailey of Tulsa, Okla; son, Greg (Rena) Bendlin of Omaha; brothers, Lowell (Judy) Bendlin and Marvin Bendlin all of Minneapolis, Minn.; sisters, Berniece Bowers, Lorraine Pullen and Madalyne Adams all of Spencer, Iowa, Edna Reynolds of Milford, Iowa, and Shirley Brinkley of San Diego, Calif.; sister-in-law, Loretta Bendlin of Spencer; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral service were Nov. 28 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend. Burial was at North Lawn Cemetery in Spencer, Iowa, with military honors. Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church at North Bend. Moser Memorial Chapel, North Bend, was in charge of arrangements.

Don L. Snyder, Fremont, Nov. 22, age 77

Don L. Snyder of Fremont, formerly of North Bend, died Nov. 22 at his home in Fremont.
Don was born Aug. 4, 1934, in North Bend to Leonard and Margary (McVicker) Snyder. He grew up in North Bend and graduated from North Bend High School in 1952. Don married Beverly Best May 7, 1954, in Papillion. They later divorced.
He served in the Army from Feb. 26, 1954, to February 25, 1956. He lived in both Omaha and Maitland, Fla., for several years before returning to the Fremont area. He worked as a food salesman for Fairmont Foods.
Don was a member of the Corner Café Early Morning Coffee Club and a former member of the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend.
Survivors include his son Mike (Dayci) Snyder of St. Cloud, Fla; daughters Dani (Tony) Testa of Fremont, Amy (Brad) Williams of Cedar Bluffs; brother Bill (Mona) Snyder of Elkhorn; sisters LaRue (Joe) Tomes, Kate Freeman, all of Fremont; ex-wife Beverly Snyder of North Bend; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

June M. Krivohlavek of Sun Rise Beach, Mo., died Nov. 16 at her home.
June was born June 13, 1931, in Schuyler to Frank R. and Helen (Kunneman) Novak. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School in Schuyler. June married Lloyd E. Krivohlavek on May 23, 1948, and they made their home in Schuyler until 1961 when they moved to Fremont. June worked as a bookkeeper and an art teacher in Fremont, and was a member of the Fremont Art Association. In 1983 June and Lloyd moved to Sun Rise Beach.
June is survived by daughters Karen (Robert) Wolfe of Macks Creek, Mo., Carol (Lyle) Christman of Fremont, Lori (Dave) Anderson of Ames, Cristy (Dean) Bloom of North Bend and Merriely (James) Thomasson of Stoutland, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and one brother Donald (Pat) Novak of O’Neill.
Funeral services were held Nov. 19 at the Svoboda Funeral Home in Schuyler with Rev. Dr. Earl Underwood officiating. Burial was in the Schuyler Cemetery.

LeRoy J. Theisen, Jr., North Bend, Nov. 13, age 64

LeRoy J. Theisen, Jr., of North Bend passed away Nov. 13 at his home.
LeRoy was born March 8, 1947, in Omaha to LeRoy and Lauretta (Copeland) Theisen. He grew up in Omaha and moved to King Lake in the 60s where he married Lynn Wood on Nov. 20, 1965. In 1979 he bought an acreage north of North Bend and has lived there ever since. He worked as a laborer for Rinker Materials, retiring in 2009.
LeRoy was a member of the Upper Midwest Tumbler Club and various other pigeon clubs. He was a member of AA since 1991 and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Council Bluffs. He was a bird and fish enthusiast.

Joe P. Zachek of Dodge died Sunday, Nov. 6, in West Point.
Joe was born April 9, 1961, in Lincoln to Henry William and Arlene Marie (Parker) Zachek. Joe was a member of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Henry L. Dahl, North Bend, Oct. 23, age 96

Henry L. Dahl of North Bend died early Sunday morning, Oct. 23, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.
Henry was born on Jan. 7, 1915, near Scribner to Harry and Margretha (Low) Dahl. He spent his first 10 years in Scribner, then moved to a farm south of Burlington, Colo., with his family. Henry finished his schooling there and helped his father on the farm. In 1934 the family moved to Graf.
On October 2, 1937, Henry married Genevieve Miner. They remained in the Graf area until the early 1940s, when Henry and his wife went with his parents to Bennington. There Henry assisted his parents in the operation of a locker plant and grocery store. After a few years, Henry and Genevieve went back to the Tecumseh area where he farmed with his father-in-law, and then farmed on his own. The couple moved to Colorado in 1958 and then to Fremont in 1959. Henry worked for Schlueter Construction for several years, and then in 1963 they moved to North Bend where Henry operated the sale barn until it burned down. He sold crop and hail insurance, and auto club insurance for several years. Henry was also the police chief in North Bend for three years. In addition, Henry operated Dahl’s Discount Store in North Bend for several years. Henry was well known for his sense of humor and the stories and jokes he liked to tell.
Henry was formerly a member of the Masonic Lodge in Tecumseh and was currently a member of North Bend Masonic Lodge No. 119. He had over 60 years of membership. Henry and Genevieve celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary on Oct. 2 this year.
Henry is survived by his wife, Genevieve, who is currently residing in the Pathfinder House in Fremont; son Robert D. (Sharon) Dahl of St. Paul; daughter Holly (Dave) Henrickson of Dodge; grandchildren Jill Dahl of Grand Island, Ryan (Brienna) Zakovec of Cedar Bluffs, Brent (Brook) Zakovec of Morse Bluff; great-grandchildren Haley, Ashtynn and Dustin Zakovec; brother Carrol (Dorothy) Dahl of Fresno, Calif.; sisters Harriet Arandus of the Hooper Care Center and Marjorie Misfeldt of Fremont; several nieces and nephews.
Henry was preceded in death by brother Clarence Dahl, sister Lois Ludvigsen, an infant son Larry, and a son-in-law Richard Wennstedt.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 26, at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont with committal to follow at Memorial Cemetery.

Evelyn (Schutt) Wesch, Fremont, Oct. 18, age 91

Evelyn K. Wesch of Fremont, formerly of Ames, died Oct. 18, at the Pathfinder House in Fremont.
Evelyn was born July 20, 1920, in Brule to Arnold and Vivian (Abts) Schutt. She moved to Schuyler as a teen and was a 1939 graduate of Schuyler High School. Evelyn taught school in rural Colfax and Dodge Counties prior to her marriage. Evelyn married Herbert H. Wesch on June 16, 1946, in North Bend. The couple farmed in the North Bend and Ames area until moving to Fremont in Feb. 2010. Herbert died Sept. 5, 2010.
Evelyn was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Ladies Aid and church quilting group.
Evelyn is survived by sons Bob (Jan) Wesch of Detroit, Mich., Jim Wesch of North Bend and Ken (Deb) Wesch of Arlington; daughter-in-law Betty Wesch of Omaha; brothers Marvin and Larry Schutt, both of Fremont, and Raymond (Jean) Schutt of Schuyler; sister Dorothy (Dale) Hosch of Fremont; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Willard Scott, Fremont, Oct. 10, age 89

R. Willard Scott of Fremont died Oct. 10, at Nye Legacy Health & Rehab Center in Fremont.
Willard was born May 29, 1922, in North Bend to Roy and Ethyl (Hamilton) Scott. He grew up in North Bend and was a 1939 graduate of North Bend High School and a 1943 graduate of Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo. Willard farmed in the North Bend area until moving to Fremont in 1986. He married Wilma Carey on August 8, 1946, in Lenox, Iowa. She died October 13, 2004. Willard was a former agent and director of Farmers Mutual United Insurance Company in Wahoo.
Willard was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Fremont and a choir member. He was a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge #119, A.F. & A.M. of North Bend, and served as Worshipful Master in 1951 and in 1975. He was a member of Ruth Chapter #119, Order of Eastern Star at North Bend. He was a former member of United Presbyterian Church in North Bend where he served as an elder, trustee, treasurer and choir member. He was also a former member of the Pathfinder Chorus at Fremont.
Willard is survived by daughter Martha (Steve) Piper of Mitchell, S.D.; sons Rod Scott of North Bend and Tom (Judie) Scott of Schuyler; brother Herbert (Janet) Scott of Cleveland, Ohio; sister Eleanor York of Plattsmouth; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Oct. 13 at the Presbyterian Church in Fremont, with burial at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Dorothy (Allan) O'Leary, Kaneohe, Hawaii, Oct. 5, age 91

Dorothy Mae O’Leary of Kaneohe, Hawaii died Oct. 5, at the Pohai Nani Good Samaritan Care Center in Kaneohe.
Dorothy was born on the family farm outside of North Bend to Ernest and Ida (Nissen) Allan. She spent her early childhood in Southern California, but returned to the family farm with her parents after the stock market crashed in 1929.
In 1942 Dorothy married Coast Guard Ensign Alfred O’Leary. After the war the couple settled on the southern California coast.
Dorothy is survived by daughter Patricia Anderson; sons Kevin (Lynne) O’Leary and Thomas (Lisa) O’Leary; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
A private family ceremony was held on the big island of Hawaii.

Ed F. Keating, Elkhorn, Oct. 4, age 91

Edmond F. “Ed” Keating of Elkhorn died Oct. 4 at Fremont Area Medical Center.
He was born July 11, 1920, in Fremont and was raised in David City, graduating from David City High School in 1938. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then lived in Lincoln, South Dakota and Grand Island before moving to Omaha in 1943. During World War II, he was employed at the Bellevue Martin Bomber Plant and worked on the Enola Gay, fitting it for its mission.
Ed married Phyllis Messner on Oct. 19, 1941, in Lincoln. She passed away Oct. 14, 1991. In 1987, Ed moved to Fremont and then returned to Omaha in 1997. He owned the Electrical Products Company from 1962 until his retirement in 1981.
Ed married Donna Wardlow on Dec. 6, 1998, in Omaha.
He was past president of the Grand Island Kiwanis Club and the Nebraska Seniors Golf Association. He was a member of North Bend Masonic Lodge 119 and Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Linda (Kenneth) Anderson of Kearney and Patricia (Kenneth) Beebe of North Bend; son Larry (Judy) Keating of Omaha; seven grandchildren: Brad (Kelle Hunt) Anderson, Barbara (Kevin) Meier, Greg (Patti) Beebe, Scott (Jean) Anderson, Jennifer Beebe, Kristy (Scott) Hazuka and Mike Anderson; 10 great-grandchildren, L.J. and Misty Hunt Anderson, Carly, Emma and Max Meier, Natalie and Halle Hazuka, Devin Anderson and Mia and Sam Beebe; sisters-in-law, Edith Messner and Virginia Keating, and brother-in-law, C.J. (Linda) Messner.
A memorial service was Oct. 8 at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Larry Arganbright officiating. A private family burial was held.

Anna (Dostal) Eckstein, North Bend, Sept. 26, age 90

Anna G. Eckstein died Sept. 26, 2011, at Birchwood Manor in North Bend.
Anna was born Jan. 23, 1921, near Bruno to Louis and Anne (Dvorak) Dostal. On Jan. 27, 1942, she married Ernest Eckstein at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Abie.
While Ernest served in the military, Anna worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash. Following the war, they returned to farm southeast of Linwood. Anna was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cedar Hill, in rural Morse Bluff.
Anna is survived by three sons Lyle (Mary) Eckstein of Linwood, Dan (Vicki) Eckstein of Lincoln and
Rich (Pam) Eckstein of Linwood.
Funeral mass was Sept. 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cedar Hill.

Amiel L. Beranek, Fremont, Sept. 22, age 82

Amiel Lou Beranek of Fremont died Thursday, Sept. 22 at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont.
Amiel was born Dec. 6, 1928, on the family farm near Morse Bluff to Amiel and Agnes (Kubr)Beranek.
Amiel met Mary Ann Degmetich in July of 1959 and describes it as “the most wonderful time of my life.” He married Mary Ann on Jan. 9, 1960, in Omaha. To this union five children were born. When Mary Ann died April 12, 1966, as a result of a motor vehicle accident, it was the worst day of Amiel’s life and he grieved his wife every day since. The advice that Amiel wrote recently was “to tell your husband or wife how much you love them and never go to bed mad.” Amiel continued to live on the family farm after the death of his wife with the help of housekeepers and then his mother. He farmed and worked at various places while raising his five wonderful children.
On Amiel’s 66th birthday, he married Doris M. Mrsny in Fremont. They were together only six years when she died of cancer on May 23, 2000.
Amiel moved from Morse Bluff to Fremont in 1984 and lived there until moving to Omaha in 2007. He returned to Fremont in 2011.
Amiel was a 75-year member of the ZCBJ Lodge at Morse Bluff (Western Fraternal Life Association) and was very proud of his Czech heritage. He was a former member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend and the Morse Bluff Volunteer Fire Dept. During his life, he enjoyed playing cards, dancing, working in the garden and beautifying the world with the flowers he grew. Anyone who knew Amiel can attest that his greatest love - second to that of his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends - was his love for baseball, mostly Yankee Baseball.
He is survived by daughter, Diane (Tom) Malesa of Winter Garden, Fla; sons David (Carrie) Beranek of Pine Bluff, Ark., Rodney (Janet) Beranek of Fairbury, Kenneth (Debra) Beranek of Cedar Bluffs and Roger (Amy) Beranek of Fremont; brother Dennis (Lucille) Beranek of Ashland; sister Geraldine Simanek of Wahoo; 11 grandchildren - Todd, Tyler, Alyssa, Justin, Tara, Tasha, Cierra and Riley Beranek, Sarah and Abbie Malesa and Marissa Varnell; two great-grandchildren - Julian Malesa and Adysenn Varnell.
He was preceded in death by two wives and sister Adeline Odvody.
Funeral service was Sept. 26 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with Father Ron Battiato officiating. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha.

Raymond C. Ranslem, Fremont, Sept. 22, age 99

Raymond C. Ranslem, 99 years, of Fremont died Sept. 22 at Creighton University Medical Center at Omaha.
He was born Nov. 10, 1911, in Morse Bluff to Leonard and Ella (Shanahan) Ranslem and grew up in Morse Bluff. Raymond lived in several Nebraska communities until moving to Fremont in 1947. He was previously employed at Lyman Richie Sand & Gravel and later worked for Nebco of Lincoln, and managed Western Sand & Gravel Company at Fremont until retiring.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont.
Raymond married Emilie G. Stuchlik on June 26, 1935, at Paxton. She died Nov. 24, 2002.
He is survived by his son, Robert Ranslem of Fremont; sister, Marcella Bowman of Fremont; and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. The Rev. David Belt will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.

Orland Svoboda, North Bend, Aug. 30, age 98

Orland “Orlie” Svoboda of North Bend died Aug. 30 at Alegent Health Memorial Hospital in Schuyler.
Orlie was born April 18, 1913, in Morse Bluff to John and Mary (Pabian) Svoboda. He grew up and lived in the Morse Bluff and North Bend area all his life, where he also farmed. Orland married Gustie Fencl on March 17, 1931, in Schuyler. Gustie died Jan. 24, 1971. He later married Margaret Jonas, who died in 1999.
Orlie is survived by son Donald “Cap” Svoboda of Fremont; sisters Marcella Pallat of North Bend and Delma Kirby of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Larry Svoboda and daughter Donna Boston.
Funeral services were Sept. 3 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend, with burial at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

LaVern "Toad" Kruger, North Bend, Aug. 28, age 93

LaVern R. “Toad” Kruger, of North Bend died Aug. 28 at Birchwood Manor in North Bend.
Toad was born June 11, 1918, in Bonesteel, S.D., to Louis and Theresa (Hansen) Kruger. He married Bobette Fleming on Sept. 28, 1937 in Central City. Bobette died June 9, 2000.
Toad worked for Wolf Sand & Gravel until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was among the soldiers that entered France on D-Day at Omaha Beach in 1944 during World War II. Toad received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to North Bend and worked at Safeway Trailer Home Manufacturing and Gaughen Well Drilling. In 1957 he and his wife opened Kruger Variety in North Bend. They owned and operated the store for over 25 years. He also delivered mail to the rural North Bend areas and delivered freight and fertilizer for Kruger Feed and Seed. Toad served on the North Bend City Council and North Bend Public School Board during the time they operated the variety store. They sold the store in 1982 and retired.
Toad was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend, V.F.W. Post #8223 of North Bend and the American Legion Post #340 of Morse Bluff. He was a member of the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department from 1941 to 1996 as an active firefighter. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in North Bend until the church closed in 2011. Toad was also a member of the Polka Club of Nebraska and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Post #200 and the Eagle’s Camping Club of Fremont.
Survivors include sons Don (Connie) Kruger of North Bend and Bill (Marilyn) Kruger of Gustavus, Alaska; daughter Peg Filliez of Lincoln; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Fri., Sept. 2, at United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. The Rev. Greg Hall and the Rev. Neal Allen will officiate. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday from with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Friday. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend, with military honors conducted by members of V.F.W. Post #8223, AmVets Post #20 of North Bend and the American Legion Post #340 of Morse Bluff.

Adeline (Jirik) Stranik, David City, Aug. 19, age 99

Adeline F. Stranik of David City, formerly of Morse Bluff, died Friday, Aug. 19, at St. Joseph Villa in David City.
Adeline was born March 9, 1912, in Prague to Simon and Marie (Sabata) Jirik. She grew up in Prague and graduated from Prague High School in 1930. She attended College of St. Mary in Omaha for two years. After college she taught school in rural Saunders County and then worked as a domestic in the home of V.J. Skutt in Omaha.
Adeline married Rudolph J. Stranik June 29, 1935, in Prague. Rudolph died June 15, 1980. After marriage they lived in Morse Bluff where they farmed. Adeline moved to David City in 2002. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff and the Altar Society.
Survivors include sons Thomas (Kathleen) Stranik of Morse Bluff and James (Konnie) Stranik of Lincoln; daughters Phyllis (Richard) Spence of Lincoln, Carol Ann Stranik of Beatrice and Maribeth Stranik of Lincoln; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25 at St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff. The Rev. Jeremy Hazuka will officiate. Blanche (Humlicek) Nesladek, Wayne, Aug. 13, age 97

Blanche M. Nesladek of Wayne, formerly of Morse Bluff, died Aug. 13, at Careage of Wayne.
Blanche was born Oct. 27, 1913, in Abie to John and Mary (Svoboda) Humlicek. She graduated from Prague High School in 1932. Blanche married Anton Nesladek on Jan. 31, 1933, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Cedar Hill. Anton died June 10, 1966.
After her marriage Blanche lived on a farm in rural Morse Bluff until moving to Wayne in 2004. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff and the altar society.
Survivors include daughter Mary Ann (Dr. Richard) DeNaeyer of Wayne; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Aug. 16 at St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff, with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery near Morse Bluff.

Betty (Houser) Hoops, Fremont, Aug. 11, age 72

Betty Ann Hoops of Fremont died Aug. 11, at Fremont Area Medical Center.
Betty was born March 8, 1939, in Leigh to Edward and Anna (Schroeder) Houser. She was a 1956 graduate of Howells High School. She married Harlan H. Hoops on Oct. 27, 1956, in Webster. They lived in the Webster area for two years and then in Schuyler for 12 years. In 1969 they moved to Fremont.
Betty was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary in Fremont. She previously worked for Kallio Campers, Pendleton Woolen Mills, Oil Gear and the Fremont Tribune.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Rhonda (Mike) Nervig and Terrie Pinkerton, all of Fremont; sisters Darlene (Jim) Smith and Marlene Hall, all of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Reginald "Green" Zelazny, Silver Creek, Aug. 9, age 75

Reginald “Geen” Zelazny of Silver Creek died Aug. 9 at the Litzenberg Long Term Care Center in Central City.
Geen was born Jan. 14, 1936, in Polk County to Edward and
Frances (Bialas) Zelazny. He grew up on the farm in Polk County and attended Dist. 23 School. Following the death of his father, Geen helped farm the family property with the help of his uncles. In 1957 he moved to Nance County where he continued farming. Geen was an active member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and member of the St. Lawrence Prayer Chain.
He is survived by his mother Frances Zelazny of Central City; brothers Jerry (Kathleen) Zelazny of North Bend and Raymond Zelazny of Silver Creek.
Funeral services were Aug. 13 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Silver Creek with interment at St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Gracie was born April 22, 1930, in Sabetha, Kan., to Robert and Zadie (Foley) Branaum. She grew up in Sabetha and graduated from high school there. Gracie lived in Falls City where she worked as a seamstress for Commodore Inc. She then moved to North Bend in 1966 where she was a seamstress for Pendleton Woolen Mills in Fremont. Gracie married Jimmie Posey on April 17, 1970, in Fairbury. They owned Western Homes Corp. and then the Old Scout in North Bend for 15 years. Jimmie died June 24, 2006.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Bend, the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #8223 and Ruth Chapter #119 of North Bend.
Survivors include daughters Cheryl (Dennis) O’Hara of Fremont and Patricia (Michael) Wennekamp of Rogers; step-daughters Patsy (Kenneth) Scholl of Fremont and Linda (Dick) Williamson of Nixa, Mo.; daughter-in-law Linda Vice of Savannah, Mo.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wed., Aug. 10, at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend with burial at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

William W. Krula, Rogers, Aug. 3, age 22

William W. Krula of Rogers died Wed., Aug. 3.
Will was born Jan. 10, 1989, to Gary and Carla Krula of Rogers. He attended District 4-R near Rogers, North Bend schools and graduated from Fremont High School in 2008.
He worked for Kohl Construction and farmed. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Fremont.
He is survived by his parents; sisters Alecia (William) Anderson of Grimes, Iowa and Callie Krula of Fremont; brother Joseph Krula of Grand Junction, Colo.; grandparents Carl Bogner of Fremont and William and Gladys Krula of Rogers.
Funeral services were Aug. 8 at the Church of the Nazarene in Fremont, with burial at Purple Cane Cemetery northwest of North Bend.
A memorial was established as a college fund for Will’s niece and nephew, Mila and Atley Anderson.

Norman L. Poppe, North Bend, Aug. 2, age 57

Norman L. Poppe of North Bend, formerly of Scribner, died Aug. 2 northwest of Morse Bluff.
Norman was born Nov. 2, 1953, in Fremont to Leonard and Ardell (Dahl) Poppe. He was raised in rural Scribner and graduated from Scribner High School in 1971. After high school Norman went to Milford Technical Community College where he received his Associates Degree in Construction Management. After his schooling he worked in Lincoln. Norman married Kay Happel on Oct. 6, 1973. They moved to Scribner and started Poppe Construction Company in 1977.
Norman was a member of United Lutheran Church in Scribner and served on the church council. He is a honorary member of the Scribner Volunteer Fire Department, member and trustee of the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend, president of the Pioneer Lakes Association, member of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Turkey Federation, and Bow Hunter Association.
Survivors include his wife, Kay of North Bend; daughters Kim (Zach) Thomsen of North Bend, Natilee (Brad) Plagge of Lincoln and Beverly Poppe of Henderson, Nev.; four grandchildren; father Leonard Poppe of Scribner; brothers Ron Poppe of Scribner, Glenn (Jan) Poppe of Fremont, Gene (Nancy) Poppe of West Plains, Mo. and Russel (Anne) Poppe of Scribner; mother-in-law and father-in-law Donald and Donna Happel of Hooper; and brother-in-law Randy Happel of Des Moines, Iowa.

Mary (Orendorff) Fischer, Morse Bluff, Aug. 1, age 76

Mary E. Fischer of Morse Bluff died Aug. 1 at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.
Mary was born March 28, 1935, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, to Frank and Hazel (Mittmen) Orendorff. Mary moved to North Bend with her family at the age of 1. She grew up in North Bend and married Francis L. Fischer May 19, 1953, in North Bend. In 1960 they moved to Morse Bluff. Mary worked at Campbell’s Soup Company in Fremont for several years. She began working at Douglas & Lomason Manufacturing in Columbus in 1969 until retiring in 1997.
She was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff and also a member of Al-Anon for 27 years.
Survivors include: husband Francis; sons Daniel Fischer, Eugene (Della) Fischer and Steve (Barb) Fischer, all of Fremont, and Francis, Jr. (Kathy) Fischer of North Bend; daughter Sandy Eddins of Fremont; sister Ramona Witthuhn of North Bend; 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Aug. 4 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery near Morse Bluff.

Maxine (Henderson) Wilshusen Engle, Millard, July 24, age 95

Maxine J. Wilshusen Engel of Millard died July 24 at Good Samaritan Society – Millard.
She was born Nov. 6, 1915, in Hampton to Harry and Vera (Harrington) Henderson. She grew up in the Polk and Hordville areas. Maxine married Ralph H. Wilshusen on July 8, 1935, in Kearney. After her marriage the couple lived in California and then returned to Nebraska where they farmed in North Bend area. Maxine worked for many years at the Campbell’s Soup Company in Fremont. Maxine retired in 1975 and moved to Fremont. Ralph died April 13, 1976. In Nov. of 1976 Maxine married Al Engel and they lived on a farm south of Fremont and then lived in Florida for 13 years before moving to Omaha in 1993. Al died Oct. 27, 2000, and Maxine has remained in the Omaha area.
Survivors include two sons, two daughters, one sister, 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. Matthew Schneider will officiate. There is no visitation. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery, Fremont.

Sylvester "Vess" Parr, Fremont, July 24, age 92

Sylvester “Vess” Parr died July 24 at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
Vess was born Nov. 26, 1918, in Dodge to Bernard and Margaret (Burenheide) Parr. He grew up in Dodge and married Gloria Muller on Sept. 9, 1943. He farmed near Dodge and in North Bend from 1963 to 1980. Vess moved to North Bend in 1980 and then to Fremont in 1997.
Vess was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont; and the Knights of Columbus #3736 in North Bend. He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge, and St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; sons Richard Parr and Rodney Parr, both of Fremont; daughters Sandra (Bob) Chromy, Wanda (Terry) Rucker, all of Fremont and Carmen Kugler of North Bend; brothers Gilbert (Leona) Parr of Fremont and Ralph Parr of Schuyler; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. The Rev. Dave Belt will officiate. Visitation is Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. with family receiving friends 6-8 p.m., and a Vigil Service/Rosary at 7 p.m., all at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation Thursday is at the church one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.

Daryle "Fuzz" Dale, North Bend, July 18, age 81

Daryle H. “Fuzz” Dale of North Bend died July 18 at Birchwood Manor in North Bend.
Fuzz was born April 27, 1930, in rural Rogers to Henry and Helen (Novak) Dale. He grew up on a farm in the Webster area and graduated from North Bend High School in 1947. He married Vivian Stubbert on Nov. 14, 1948, in North Bend. Fuzz farmed for a few years then worked for Dekalb Seed Company, hauling seed to dealers for 20 years. He then sold crop insurance for Berry and Company in Omaha. He was a member of United Presbyterian Church in North Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian; sons Larry (Ginger) Dale of Newport, Ore., Doug (Carol) Dale of Fremont and Lanny (fiancée Eva Kinyon) Dale of Omaha; daughters Daralyn (Stephen) Dirkschneider of Snyder and Deb (Steven) Kunasek of Fremont; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were July 22 at the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend with a private burial at Glencoe Cemetery near Dodge.

Josie (Capps) Harrold, Fremont, July 10, age 47

Josie L. Harrold of Fremont died July 10 at her home.
Josie was born Aug. 29, 1963, in Omaha. She grew up in Fremont and was a graduate of Fremont High School. She moved to North Bend in 1994 and then to Harvard in 1996. She lived in Broken Bow, from 1998 until returning to Fremont in 2004. Josie was employed as a cook at the Coffee Pot Café in Fremont.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Harrold of Fremont; sons Lloyd Reeves of Fremont, Eric Reeves of Carter Lake, Iowa, and Willy (Hope) Reeves of Washington; daughters Amanda Reeves of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Nicole Reeves of Fremont, Danelle Weiland of Lincoln and Jessica Weiland of Omaha; her father and step-mother, George and Dorothy Capps of Fremont; sisters Kim Capps of North Bend, Barbara (Cory) Schnoor of Dalton, Ala., Cathy Honeywell, Theresa Elliott, Patty (Ron) Larsen, Cindy (Darin) Morton and Michelle Schreck, all of Fremont and Rita Wachlin of Austin, Minn; grandmother Betty Price of Fremont; father-in-law and mother-in-law Bob and Nancy Harrold of Broken Bow; and four grandchildren.

Leon "Leo" Semrad, North Bend, July 7, age 88

Leon M. “Leo” Semrad of North Bend died July 7 at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.
Leo was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Edholm to Joseph and Antonette (Pacl) Semrad. He grew up in North Bend and graduated from North Bend High School in 1941. Leo served in the U.S. Army in Japan and the Asiatic Pacific during World War II from 1945 to 1946. He lived in the North Bend and Morse Bluff area his whole life. He owned and operated the Bluffs Pub and a bait shop in Morse Bluff and was a life-long farmer.
Leo married Kathleen Powers Feb. 9, 1948, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clyde. Leon was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, Knights of Columbus Council #3736 of North Bend, American Legion Post #340 of Morse Bluff, and V.F.W. Post #8223 of North Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; daughters Kathleen (LaVern) Krepel of North Bend, JoAnne Krueger of Columbus, Patricia (Dale) Clark of Cambridge, Iowa, Cindy (John) Limbach of North Bend, Teri (Steve) Hamilton of North Bend and Deb (Dave) Stoupa of Lincoln; 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Mary Dieckmann; brother Joseph Semrad; sisters Wilma Dlouhy and Edith Arps; and great-granddaughter Hailey Neill.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. July 12 at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, with burial at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend. Full military honors were conducted by the North Bend V.F.W. Post #8223, AMVETS Post #20 and Morse Bluff American Legion Post #340.

Anton Eckstein, Linwood, July 4, age 87

Anton Eckstein of Linwood died July 4 at Fremont Area Medical Center from a heart attack suffered on his farm.
Anton was born July 1, 1924, in the Morse Bluff area to Vaclav and Otillia (Werverka) Eckstein. He attended rural school in Saunders County and graduated from North Bend High School in 1943. He married Joan Toman Sept. 26, 1958, in Fremont and farmed in the Linwood area until he retired in 2009.
Anton is survived by his wife, Joan; daughters Tillie Eckstein of Genoa, Cindy (Mark) Madsen of Linwood; son Frank Eckstein; and grandchildren Samantha Hultquist, Mackenzie and Charles Madsen.
Funeral services were July 8 at the Svoboda Funeral Home North Chapel in Schuyler with Father Christian Goodwin officiating.

John E. Soukup, Fremont, July 4, age 87

John E. Soukup of Fremont died July 4 at Nye Legacy Health & Rehab Center.
John was born July 25, 1924, in Fremont to Ernest and Mary (Dobrovolny) Soukup. He attended grade school at Bellview District 42, a one room (1-8 grade) country school, and graduated from Fremont High School in 1942. He attended Midland College for two years.
He married his high school sweetheart, Jane E. Byorth, on Aug. 27, 1944. She passed away Oct. 8, 1995.
John farmed north of Fremont for his whole life, the third generation to do so on same section, and also worked for Consolidated Blenders for 31 years. It had just been announced that John is a recipient of the 2011 Pioneer Farm Family Award. John was a charter member and past president of the Fremont Antique Car Club, and founder of the Fremont Antique Swap Meet which he and his wife Jane and son Carl ran for 20 years. John started the Fremont Toy Show in 1986, and it is still being held to date. John was a- member of the First United Methodist Church in Fremont.
John was preceded in death by his brother, Francis Soukup of North Bend, sister Marie Nelson of Fremont and nephew Harold Soukup of North Bend.
Survivors include son Carl Soukup of Fremont; daughter Barbara (Glenn) Baker of Waco, Texas; two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Funeral services were July 8 at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont with committal at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church.

Ruth (Napier) Eaton, North Bend, June 23, age 88

Ruth A. Eaton died June 23 at Birchwood Manor in North Bend.
Ruth was born Oct. 17, 1922, to Arthur and Edna (Diffey) Napier of North Bend. She lived all her life in North Bend and was a 1940 graduate of North Bend High School. She taught school for one year at Dodge County District 73.
On Oct. 11, 1941, Ruth married Gerald R. Eaton in Papillion. The couple farmed northeast of North Bend. Gerald died Oct. 18, 1990. Ruth moved into North Bend in 1995.
Ruth was a member of the United Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and a member of the Presbyterian Women. While living on the farm she was a member of an extension club.
Ruth is survived by son Delrae (Janice) Eaton of North Bend; daughter-in-law Michelle Eaton of Fremont; brother-in-law Lloyd (Gertrude) Eaton of Chula Vista, Calif; sister-in-law Dorothy (Wendell) Buche of Fremont; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was June 28 at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Neal Allen officiating. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery.

Pauline (Jones) Frailey, Schuyler, age 77

A memorial service for Pauline M. Frailey was held June 21 at Kracl Funeral Chapel, Schuyler, with Jerry Kracl as speaker. This was followed by a private family committal.
Pauline was born April 22, 1934, in Greeley, Colo., to Oscar and Frances (Langley) Jones. She married Richard Frailey Oct. 25, 1952, in Greeley. After living in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Greeley, they moved to Schuyler in 1969. Pauline worked for the Schuyler Sun for over 30 years as receptionist and business manager.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Frailey who resides at David Place in David City; daughters Linda Osborn, Barbara Woods, both of Kanab, Utah; Shawna (Steve) Schreiber, Columbus; son Chip (Lynda) Frailey of Sutherland; brothers Morgan (Esther) Jones of Willow Springs, Ark., Oscar (Ruby) Jones, Huntsville, Ala.; sisters Darlene (Roy) Miller, of Bentonville, Ark., Patsy (Wayne) Terry of Greeley, Colo.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Don R. Gaskill, Schuyler, June 16, age 84

Don Roger Gaskill died June 16 at the Golden Living Center in Schuyler. At his request, he was buried at the Linwood Hill Cemetery near Linwood the same day.
Don was born June 12, 1927, in St. Charles, S.D., to Archie Dean and Orfa (Hollen) Gaskill. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. Don was a “master builder” and worked at his trade his entire life.
Don was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints.
Don was married for 23 years to Alberta “Lea” Allee. They had four children: Michelle Peters and Don R. Gaskill, Jr., both of Salt Lake City, Utah; Lori M. Palmer, Tooele, Utah; and Dan R. Gaskill of Reno, Nev. He was married to Carlyn Walsworth for 14 years. He was also married to Guadalupa Gonzales for eight years and they had five children; Areli, Marilyn, Mariam Gaskill, Alarcon, Karla and Edwin Asal Gaskill. Other survivors include brothers; John (Marsha) Gaskill of Godfrey, Ill., and Alton Gaskill of Wash.; sisters-in-law, Mildred Gaskill of North Bend and LaVaine Gaskill of Schuyler, 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy (Prchal) Chromy, Morse Bluff, June 14, age 88

Dorothy M. Chromy of Morse Bluff died June 14 at Fremont Area Medical Center.
Dorothy was born March 12, 1923, in Omaha to Charles and Matilda (Riedman) Prchal. She grew up in Omaha and married Stephan F. “Steve” Chromy on Jan. 18, 1945, at St. Rose Church in Omaha. Steve died July 30, 1986. After her marriage she lived in Malmo for 10 years and then moved to Morse Bluff. Dorothy worked for several years at Blevins Popcorn Plant in North Bend, as well providing child care. She moved to North Bend in 2003.
Dorothy was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff and the altar society. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #340 of Morse Bluff and VFW Auxiliary Post #8223 of North Bend.
Survivors include sons Steve (Audrey) Chromy of North Bend, Robert (Sandy) Chromy and Edward (Becky) Chromy, all of Fremont and Donald Chromy of North Bend; daughters Kathy (Dan) Bauer of Morse Bluff and Jeanne (Mike) Quinn of Columbus; brothers Thomas (Lorraine) Prchal of Storm Lake, Iowa and Louis (Ginny) Prchal of Plattsmouth; 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Funeral mass was June 18 at St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Morse Bluff.

Dorothy (Parrett) Guyle, Fremont, June 4, age 77

Dorothy M. Guyle of Fremont, formerly of North Bend, died June 4 at Nye Legacy in Fremont. Dorothy was born June 5, 1933, in McLouth, Kan. to Glenn and Katherine (Vantyl) Parrett. She grew up in McLouth and was a 1951 graduate of Scandia, Kan. She moved to Haddam, Kan. and lived in various cities until moving to Gothenburg in 1961. Dorothy married Vernon L. Guyle on Sept. 9, 1965, in North Platte. Vernon died Nov. 9, 1990.
Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper for Peterson’s IGA for nine years until moving to the Mead area. She later moved to Fremont and lived there until moving to North Bend in 1988. Dorothy worked at the Fremont Area Medical Center in the accounting department until retiring. She then worked part-time as a bookkeeper at True Value Hardware Store in North Bend and for Beed’s Auto Parts and Service. She returned to Fremont in 2008.
Dorothy is survived by son Gary (Laurie) Guyle of Mead; daughter Glenda (Mark) Williamson of Rogers, Ark.; brothers Bob (Lucille) Parrett of Fremont and Frank (Alberta) Parrett of Manhattan, Kan.; sister Olive Richardson of Walker, Minn.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and an infant daughter, Linda Kay.
Memorial Service is 10:30 a.m. on Wed., June 8, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, with burial at the Gothenburg Cemetery in Gothenburg.

Dick Hanna, Lincoln, June 3, age 82

Richard C. “Dick” Hanna died June 3 in Lincoln.
Dick was born March 18, 1929, in Lynn, Mass., to Marcus and Frances (Hill) Hanna.
Dick attended college at Nebraska Wesleyan. He married Beth Jansen on Dec. 30, 1951, in her hometown of North Bend.
After Dick graduated in 1952, he and Beth moved to Rochester, Minn., where Dick attended the School of Physical Therapy at Mayo Clinic. When he was certified in 1954, they moved back to northeast Lincoln where Dick worked with Lincoln Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Clinic. He went on to purchase the practice and renamed it Southside Physical Therapy. Dick retired in 1996.
During his life Dick was a member of First United Methodist Church, Northeast Rotary Club, numerous physical therapy organizations, Kappa Tau at Nebraska Wesleyan and Coaches Club at Nebraska Wesleyan.
Survivors include wife Beth Hanna; son Bob (Vanessa) Hanna of Lincoln; daughters Becky (Tim Keelan) Hanna; Wendy (Bill Gallentine) Hanna, all of Lincoln; sister Doreen Osborne, Bradford, Mass.; sisters-in-law Evelyn Hanna, of North Andover, Mass and Alice Dykeman of Dallas, Texas; and three grandchildren

Linda (Popken) Baumert, North Bend, May 11, age 49

Linda S. Baumert of North Bend died May 11 near North Bend in a car accident.
Linda was born Feb. 13, 1962, in West Point to Stanley and Ione (Hasemann) Popken. She grew up in Uehling and graduated from Logan View High School in 1980. She received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1983.
Linda married Kurt Baumert on Oct. 19, 1984, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Uehling. They moved to North Bend and Linda taught first grade at Schuyler Elementary for 27 years.
She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend and was active in the church choir. She was also a member of P.E.O. in North Bend.
Survivors include her husband Kurt; son Tyler Baumert of Lincoln; daughters Ashley (Broc) Blanchard of West Des Moines, Iowa, Kelly Baumert of Lincoln and Amy Baumert of North Bend; parents Stanley and Ione Popken of Fremont; brother David (Michelle) Popken of Boca Raton, Fla.; sister Barb (Darrell) Sagehorn of Dallas, Texas and Nancy (Jack) Hank of San Antonio, Texas.

She was born March 16, 1941, in Scribner to Edward and Adella (Dostal) Reznicek. The family lived in Dodge until moving to North Bend in 1957. Pat graduated from North Bend High School in 1959 and worked at Birchwood Manor.
On Oct. 29, 1960, Pat married John F. Hall in North Bend. He died July 9, 2000. They moved to Fremont in 1970 where Pat worked at the Alco Store and the Family Fun Center. She worked in Omaha as an office manager until retiring in March 2007.
Pat was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. She was a former member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend.
Survivors include son Jeff (Deb) Hall, daughter Sheila (Mark) Pettit, all of Fremont; brothers Dennis Reznicek of Louisville, Eddie (Marge) Reznicek of Omaha; sisters Dorothy Kreikemeier of Dodge, Sue Johnson of Omaha and four grandsons.
Memorial Mass will be May. 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend with the Rev. Donald Cleary officiating. There is no visitation. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery.

Evelyn (Viglicky) Pollard, North Bend, May 7, age 91

Evelyn L. Pollard of North Bend died May 7 at Birchwood Manor in North Bend.
Evelyn was born August 25, 1919, in Edholm to Anton and Josephine (Vidlak) Viglicky. She grew up in Edholm and married William J. Pollard on Feb. 17, 1946, in Tilden. William died Sept. 24, 1987. Evelyn lived in Linwood and Schuyler and worked at Saeger’s Drug Store in Schuyler.
Evelyn moved to North Bend in 1946 and was the co-owner of Pollard Implement Company of North Bend until 1988.
She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, St. Ann’s Altar Society, and Christian Mothers.
Survivors include son Patrick Pollard of North Bend; daughter Kitty (Melvin) Bailey of Schuyler; brother Richard (Evelyn) Viglicky of Hastings; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was May 10 at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Schuyler.

Clyde "Mac" McDaniel, Jr., Morse Bluff, April 28, age 57

Clyde P. “Mac” McDaniel, Jr. died April 28 at his home in Morse Bluff.
Mac was born Sept. 20, 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Clyde and Loretta McDaniel. He attended schools in Cincinnati and Fayetteville, Ohio. He enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in Vietnam. Mac was paralyzed in an automobile accident in 1973.
On Oct. 26, 1974, Mac married Marilyn Kavan of Morse Bluff. The couple lived in Wahoo and Fremont before moving to Morse Bluff in 1993.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn; son Clinton McDaniel of Morse Bluff; daughters Shanna McDaniel and Angela Gomez, both of Morse Bluff; grandson Caleb Gomez of Morse Bluff; in-laws Leonard and Patricia Kavan of Morse Bluff; brothers Jerry McDaniel, Mark (Kelli) McDaniel and Jeff McDaniel, all of Kentucky; brothers-in-law Larry Kavan, Jerry Kavan and Gene (Deb) Kavan, all of Morse Bluff; sisters-in-law Betty Ferguson and Stacy (Steve) Camden, both of Indiana, Ruby Morrison, JoAnne (Ray) Wilson and Pam (Bill) Harrell, all of Kentucky, and Bev (Skeeter) Ratovec.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 6, at 10 a.m. with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery. A Celebration of Life potluck dinner will be follow at 11:30 a.m. at the North Bend VFW Hall.

Glen Gates, Sr., Prague, April 8, age 92

Glen A. Gates, Sr. of Prague, died April 8 at the Golden Living Center in Schuyler.
Mass of Christian burial was April 13 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Prague with Rev. Jamie Hottovy officiating. Burial will be at St. Vitus Cemetery in Touhy with military honors.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Masses or Prague Rescue Unit.
Glen was born Aug. 21, 1918, in Alma to Clifford and Fedora (Weldon) Gates. He graduated from Lincoln High School. On June 17, 1941, he entered the United States Army and served with the Army engineers until his discharge in 1945.
On Jan. 15, 1945, Glen married
Elizabeth Masek at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Valparaiso. They lived in Picstown, S.D. for five years while he worked on the Fort Randall Dam. They then moved to Prague where he owned and operated Gates Hardware for over 35 years, retiring in 1994.
Glen was a member of the church and a Life Member of VFW Post 3606 in Lincoln. He had served on the village board and Prague rescue squad.
Glen is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gates of Prague; daughters Patricia (Marvin) Roubal of Bruno, Maxine Prochaska of Wahoo; sons Stephen (Sonja) Gates, Glen (Sharon) Gates, Jr., all of Lincoln, Gerald (Jeanille) Gates, Wahoo, Jerome (Judy) Gates, Columbus, one brother Gilbert (Dolores) Gates of Lincoln, 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death grandson Jason Prochaska in 2001, a brother Virgil Gates and sister Fannie Harris.

Virginia C. (Mahlberg) “Ginny” Hebbeln died April 5. She was born in Minden, Iowa, April 16, 1921, to Raymond and Barbara Mahlberg.
She was preceded in death by husband Erwin J. Hebbeln; parents, Raymond and Barbara Mahlberg; brother, Francis Mahlberg; sister, Dolores Shaw; brother, Raymond Mahlberg Jr.; infant sister, Rita Mahlberg. Survived by son John E. Hebbeln; daughter and son-in-law Jacqueline and Joseph Raus; grandchildren: Craig (Kathy) Hebbeln, Rene (Allen) Heath, Eric Hebbeln, Deb Murphy, Rebecca (Jim) Begley, Elizabeth (Mikel) Wess, Barbara Raus; 10 great-grandchildren; brother Gerald (Mary) Mahlberg and many cousins.
The family received friends Thursday, April 7, 5 to 7 p.m. at the West Center Chapel in Omaha, followed by vigil service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was Saturday, April 9 at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa. Interment was at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.

David Chmelka, Bruno, April 5, age 59

David Chmelka of Bruno died April 5 at his home in Bruno. Funeral services were April 11 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bruno with Rev. Ron Homes officiating. Burial will be at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery.
Dave was born July 3, 1951, in David City to Ermin and Celestine (Soukup) Chmelka. He graduated from David City High School in 1969 and served in the United States Army from 1971-1977, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.
On July 6, 1977, he married Julie Palensky in Schuyler. They were married for 21 years. Dave lived his entire life in Bruno, farmed and worked for Proskovec Earth Moving Company.

Edaward "Babe" Neneman, North Bend, April 1, age 83

Edward J. “Babe” Neneman of North Bend “punched out” April 1 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Services in Rushford, Minn.
Edward was born March 27, 1928, in Omaha to Teofil and Marjanna “Mary” (Adamczewski) Neneman. He grew up in Omaha and graduated from Omaha South High School. Babe worked at Falstaff Brewing Company for 18 years in Omaha. He moved to North Bend in 1970, where he owned and operated Babe’s Bar for 18 years.
Babe married Lois Ann Byers July 8, 1950, in Omaha. She died Oct. 15, 1999.
Babe was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Omaha Old Timers Baseball Association. In high school he was an all-star catcher and went on to play semi-pro baseball in Gretna and Omaha. Babe was also a well known hockey player, playing briefly for the Omaha Knights. Later he owned race horses and raced at Ak-sar-ben Race Track.
Survivors include sons Edward J. “Babe” Neneman, Jr. of Polebridge, Mont.; Joseph (Connie) Neneman of Gardner, Kan.; James (Carol) Neneman of Ashland; and Terry (Karen) Neneman of Lanesboro, Minn; daughter Pat (Dave) Spencer of Lincoln; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. on April 7 at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. Visitation is April 6 from 3-8 p.m. with a Rosary/Vigil Service at 8 p.m. at the church in North Bend. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday. Burial will be at Killian Cemetery near Morse Bluff.

Judy (Launt) Schauer, Fremont, March 31, age 81

Norma Julianne “Judy” Schauer of Fremont died March 31 at the Waverly Care Center in Waverly.
Judy was born May 17, 1929, in Wayne to William and Thelma (Peterson) Launt. She grew up in Oakdale and graduated from high school there in 1946. She graduated from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in history with education and social science. In 1962 she received her masters in history from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Judy married Harland L. Schauer on Dec. 30, 1950, in Oakdale. They lived north of Fremont where her husband farmed and worked for Hormel’s. Harland died Sept. 11, 2001.
Judy taught school in Nebraska for 31 years, including high school in Wahoo, elementary and high school in Fremont, high school in North Bend, and two years at Midland Lutheran College in the education department. She was also a founder and co-owner of H & J Camper Sales.
She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and participated in all phases of Girl Scouting at local and national levels, and was a Prairie Hills Girl Scout Legislative Representative. She was a member of Arbor Vitae Chapter 92 Order of Eastern Star, of the American Association of University Women, member of NSEA, NEA, and Retired Teachers Association and the Dodge County Retired Teachers Association. Judy was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and Past President of Rosedale School Board District 65. She was a member of the Dodge County Planning Commission for 23 years and active with the Dodge County Concerned Citizens, as well as a member of ‘Prairie Watch.’ Judy was a past district officer of the General Federated Women’s Club.
Judy is survived by sons William (Florene) Schauer of Bennett, John (Dr. Jolene) Schauer of Lincoln and Rev. Samuel (Musu) Payne of Lima, Ohio; sister Suzanne Delaney of Lawrence, Kan.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services are April 6, at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. The committal will be in the Oakdale Cemetery in Oakdale. Memorials are suggested to Salem Lutheran Church.

Laureen (Kucera) Gocken, Fremont, March 30, age 72

Laureen M. Gocken of Fremont died Wednesday, March 30, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.
Laureen was born June 5, 1938, in Schuyler to Frank and Lillian (Houfek) Kucera. She grew up in Schuyler and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1956. Laureen married Jerry Gocken on Dec. 15, 1956, in Schuyler. The couple lived in Fremont. Jerry died May 1, 1999.
Laureen worked at several restaurants, as a clerk and in housekeeping at the Memorial Hospital of Dodge County Annex for 23 years.
Survivors include sons Gerald Gocken, Jr., of Fremont, George (Sheri) Gocken of North Bend, Michael (Kayla) Gocken of Schuyler; daughter Abby Schlapfer of Fremont; brother Laverne (Karen) Kucera of Columbus; Barbara (Dick) Hirschbrunner of Columbus and Julie Kucera of Schuyler; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Memorial services were held April 5 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, with a private burial following at Linwood Hill Cemetery.

Elaine (Wolf) Laughlin, Redding, Calif. March 25, age 91

Elaine D. Laughlin passed away March 25 in Redding, Calif. Elaine was born in Morse Bluff on July 4, 1919, to Emil E. and Stella (Tepley) Wolf, Sr. She grew up in Morse Bluff and graduated from North Bend High School in 1937. She completed business school in Omaha and worked for OPPD and Union Pacific Railroad.
Elaine married Howard Laughlin in Solomon, Kan., on July 3, 1965. They moved to McPherson, Kan., in 1968. She was very active in Eastern Star and the Elks Club. She held many offices within each organization. Elaine was a member of First United Methodist Church in McPherson.
Survivors include niece Janis Wolf (husband Thomas J.) O’Neill Jr. of Lincoln; nephew, Robert E. (Pat) Wolf of Morse Bluff; son, Norman (Connie) Laughlin of Redding, CA.; Daughter, Iva (Jim) Byrd of Hendersonville, N.C., as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be a private family service with burial at Woodland Cemetery June 13.

Gerri (Ladehoff) Price, Fremont, March 24, age 90

Geraldine A. “Gerri” Price of Fremont died March 24 at Fremont Area Medical Center.
Gerri was born Feb.18, 1921, in North Bend to John and Julia (Mitchell) Ladehoff. She moved to Fremont at age 12 and graduated from Fremont High Shcool in 1938. She attended night classes and summer school at Midland College, graduating in 1968 with her teaching degree. Gerri taught elementary school in rural schools and in Fremont for 30 years and was a member of the Fremont Alliance Church in Fremont.
Gerri married Kenneth R. Price on Oct. 2, 1942, in Fremont. He died Jan. 27, 2007.
Survivors include daughter Julie Novak of Austin, Minn.; sister Evelyn Liston of Fremont; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont on April 9 at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont.

Alice (Cagley) Diffey, North Bend, March 27, age 76

Alice M. Diffey of North Bend died Sunday, March 27, at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
Alice was born September 27, 1934, in Creston, Iowa, to Clifford and Georgia (Winter) Cagley. She grew up at Creston and graduated from Creston High School in 1952. Alice graduated from Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo. in 1956. She married Ralph Diffey on June 3, 1956, and moved to North Bend. She spent most of her life farming with her husband and was a church organist for North Bend United Presbyterian Church and also at Fremont Presbyterian Church for more than 25 years.
Alice was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. She was also a member of and held various offices in United Presbyterian Women, P.E.O Chapter CT, Order of Eastern Star Ruth Chapter 119 and Goldenrod Garden Club, all of North Bend. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines in Lincoln, North Bend Community Band and North Bend Community Players, and she was a NBC high school accompanist. She also taught private organ and piano lessons.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Ralph; son Harold (Diane) Diffey of Omaha; daughters Karen (Brad) Adden of Lincoln, Dawn (Matt) Jackson of Lincoln and Sharon (Jerry) Pyburn of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; brothers-in-law Fred Patterson of San Diego, Calif. and Charles Divis of Wahoo; sister-in-law Carol Clement of North Bend; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 31, at United Presbyterian Church in North Bend with the Rev. Neal Allen officiating. Visitation with family receiving friends is Wednesday, March 30, 3-8 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. A P.E.O. Service and an Order of Eastern Star Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Both are open to the public. Visitation will also be on Thursday at the church one hour prior to service. Burial will be at North Bend’s Woodland Cemetery.

Bea (McMahan) Hines, Scribner, March 25, age 85

Beatrice L. Hines of Scribner died March 25 at the Good Samaritan Center in Scribner.
Bea was born May 23, 1925, in Murray, Iowa, to Calvin and Bessie (Palmer) McMahan. She moved to Fremont as a young girl, graduating from Fremont High School in 1944. She attended Midland College where she received a teaching certificate and taught school in rural Dodge County.
Bea married Lenord Hines Aug. 24, 1947, in Fremont. He died Dec. 10, 2000.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Fremont, extension club and a birthday club. Bea worked at Schwesers Department Store from 1970 to 1994 and was a bookkeeper for the family business, Hines’ Refuse Services, for over 40 years.
Survivors include daughters Lenice Hines of Fremont, Sally Hines of West Plains, Mo., Susan (Rick) Nutzman of Falls City; sister Charlotte (Elmer) Branzovsky of Fremont and three grandchildren.
Graveside services are March 30 at Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Scott Jensen officiating.

Sylvia (Brtek) Fencl, North Bend, March 21, age 93

Sylvia Fencl died March 21 in North Bend.
Sylvia was born Dec. 9, 1917, in Linwood to Matthew and Mary (Shultz) Brtek and attended country school near Linwood.
On April 18, 1936, she married Stanley Fencl at the courthouse in Wahoo. They farmed near Prague, later moving to town. Stanley died March 10, 2002. One son, Marvin, died June 12, 2006. She is survived by anotehr son, Kenny of Prague, and an extended family.
The funeral was March 25 at Kracl Funeral Chapel in David City with speaker Jerry Kracl. Burial was in Prague National Cemetery.

Charles "Joe" Clement, North Bend, March 19, age 74

Charles “Joe” Clement of North Bend died March 19, at his home in North Bend.
Joe was born June 21, 1936, in Westboro, Mo. to Charles and Doris (Johnston) Clement. He graduated from Westboro High School in 1956. He attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo., before entering the U.S. Air Force Jan. 9, 1957, serving until 1960 in Hawaii, Guam, Korea and Saudi Arabia. Joe returned to Westboro and worked for Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio. He moved to North Bend in 1965 where he farmed for five years and then began driving trucks. Joe was a self-employed over-the-road truck driver until retiring in 2001.
Joe married Carol Diffey August 18, 1963, in North Bend.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at North Bend, the Masonic Lodge 119 AF & AM, Order of Eastern Star Ruth Chapter 119 and AmVets Post 20, all of North Bend, Hooper Saddle Club, American Quarter Horse Association and the North Bend Golf Club.
Survivors include: his wife; twin sister Joyce Lefforge of Rockport, Mo.; sisters Nancy (Donald Lee) Martin of Westboro, and Pat (Bob) Fox of Mound City; brothers-in-law Ralph (Alice) Diffey of North Bend and Chuck Divis of Wahoo; nieces Debbie Jo (Bob) Smith, Karen (Brad) Adden, Dawn (Matt) Jackson, Sharon (Jerry) Pyburn and Ann (Paul) Ellenberger; nephews Harold (Diane) Diffey, Greg ( Jill) Divis, Mark (Sharon) Divis, Chuck (Penny) Fox, and Rich Fox.
The funeral was March 22 at the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend with the Rev. Neal Allen officiating.
Burial was at Woodland Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the North Bend V.F.W. Post 8223, AMVETS Post 20 and Morse Bluff American Legion Post 340.

Wilfred G. Tenopir, Wahoo, March 17, age 79

Wilfred G. Tenopir of Wahoo, formerly of Fremont, died March 17 at South Haven Nursing Home in Wahoo.
Wilfred was born Feb. 12, 1932, in rural Prague to Harry and Sylvia (Brecka) Tenopir. He lived in Cedar Bluffs and worked at Plumfield Nurseries in Fremont. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. Wilfred had lived in Fremont since 1978, moving to South Haven Nursing Home in Nov. 2008.
He was a former member of American Legion Post #158 of Cedar Bluffs.
Survivors include his sister, Bernice Conkling of North Bend; niece Janice (Bob) Leffers of Schuyler; nephew Francis (JoAnn) Zakovec of Morse Bluff; great-nephews Ryan (Brienna) Zakovec of Cedar Bluffs; and Brent (Brook) Zakovec of Morse Bluff.
Funeral services were March 19 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery in Cedar Bluffs. Pallbearers were Ryan Zakovec, Brent Zakovec, Bob Leffers, Francis Zakovec, and Honorary pallbearers were John Hobza, Don Thomas, Ed White, Jerome Frana. Full military honors were conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.

Vernon Koester, Scribner, March 7, age 72

Vernon Koester of rural Scribner died at his home on March 7.
Vernon was born February 5, 1939, in West Point to Otto and Martha (Engelbrecht) Koester. He was raised on the farm southwest of Scribner that had been in his family for 135 years. He attended District 66 School and Scribner High School before leaving to farm. Vernon continued to farm until he retired in 2003.
Vernon married Marian Weber on February 21, 1960, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Scribner. He was a past member of the District 12 School Board, Scribner Co-op Board of Directors and presently a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Scribner.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Marian; son Steve Koester of Seward; daughters Diane of Norfolk and Joann of Columbus; a granddaughter and a great-grandson, both of Columbus; and sisters Darlene Schwinck of West Point and Norma (Norman) Tonjes of Scribner.
Funeral services were March 11 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Scribner, with burial at Scribner Cemetary.

Rita Ann Glidden of Lava Hot Springs, Utah, died March 2 at her home.
Rita was born Oct. 2, 1936, in North Bend to Ira and Mildred Papa. She was a 1954 graduate of North Bend High School and married George Fiala. While her husband was in the military, they lived in Nebraska, Georgia, Arizona, California and Florida before settling in Idaho in 1986.
Rita was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, at the South Bannok County Museum, and the Lava Senior Center and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Rita is survived by her husband, Donald Glidden, son David (Linda Digregorio) Fiala; daughter June Squires, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter; brother Richard (Celine) Papa; aunt Sally (Doug) Loseke; brothers-in-law Ray Glidden and William (Judy) Glidden.
Services were in Arimo, Idaho, with internment in Bruneau, Idaho.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the charity of choice.

Pricilla "Pat" (Smith) Mullally, Fremont, Feb. 26, age 93

Priscilla C. “Pat” Mullally died Feb. 23 at Nye Pointe Health and Rehab Center in Fremont.
Pat was born Feb. 26, 1917, to Frederick and Hannah (Gray) Smith in Des Moines, Iowa. She grew up in Van Meter, Iowa and graduated from high school there. Pat married Royal E. Desler on Oct. 22, 1940 in Sioux City, Iowa. He died April 3, 1968.
Pat moved to Omaha in 1944 and was employed by R.L. Polk Co. She moved to North Bend in 1966.
Pat married Frank L. Mullally on Sept. 4, 1971, in North Bend. He passed away April 3, 2007.
Survivors include daughter Deb Mullally of North Bend; sons Gary (Marge) Desler of Henderson, Nev., and David Desler and Mike Metcalf of San Francisco, Calif.; step-sons Jim (Marlene) Mullally of Fremont and Bob (Lisa) Mullally of Columbus; step-daughters Sharon (Dan) Strecker of Central City, Micki Walker of Columbus, and Jean (Vaughn) Kinney of Tipton, Iowa; 24 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Feb. 26 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend, with burial at Hillcrest Cemetary in Omaha at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the North Bend Rescue Squad and the North Bend Library Building Fund.

Durward W. Black, Mesa, Ariz., Feb. 14, age 94

Durward W. Black died Feb. 14, at his home in Mesa, Ariz. He was born Feb. 9, 1917, to Charles B. and Mary (Marxsen) Black in Fullerton.
The family moved to Fremont in 1925. Durward was a 1934 graduate of Fremont High School and attended Midland College. He worked at the former W.H. Pollock (later O.P. Skaags) Grocery Store in Fremont. In 1937 he moved to Los Angles, Calif. Durward served in the Air Force during World War II. He returned to California where he became vice president of marketing for Alpha Beta Food Markets in Fullerton from 1947 to 1979. He moved to Mesa in 2002.
Durward married Melva Eileen Guthrie on April 23, 1944, in Mesa. She survives.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as Bishop. Durward served three church missions in Mexico, Barbados, West Indies and Salt Lake City, Utah. He was past president of the Association of Food Chains and member of the National Association of Food Chains.
Other survivors include sons Duane (Linda) Black of Grand Junction, Colo., Kenneth (Inga) Black of Oregon City, Ore.; daughters Elizabeth (Steven) Fuller of Cottonwood, Ariz., Barbara (Jack) Fox of Santa Ana, Calif.; sister-in-law Dorothy Black of Santa Ana, Calif; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Purple Cane Cemetery near North Bend. There is no visitation. Military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Post 8223, AmVets Post 20, both of North Bend and American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff.

Fritz J. Hoffman, Columbus, Feb. 12, age 82

Fritz J. Hoffman of Columbus, formerly of North Bend, died Feb. 12.
The funeral was Feb. 15 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus. Military honors were conducted by Hartman Post 84 American Legion Honor Guard. Burial was at All Saints Cemetery in Columbus.
Fritz was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Omaha to Fred Hoffman and Myrtle Nissen. He attended school in Fremont. In 1946, at age 17, he entered the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1949. Fritz drove truck for 43 years logging over 4 million miles.
On June 16, 1950, Fritz married Joan Folk in Fremont. The couple lived in North Bend for 20 years prior to moving to Columbus in 2000. He was a member of St. Isidore Church, V.F.W. and the Eagles Club.
He is survived by wife Joan Hoffman of Columbus; daughters Kim (Jerry) Dvorak of Stuart, Deb (Richard) Hamling of Columbus; sons Doug (Wanda) Hoffman of Fruita, Colo., Rick Hoffman of Honolulu, Hawaii; brother Dean Hoffman of Valley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

James E. Micek, Lincoln, January 31, age 82

James Edward Micek of Lincoln died Jan. 31 at his home following a long battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma.
Jim was born Oct. 21, 1928, to Barney and Dora (Staroscik) Micek in Columbus, Nebraska. He graduated from Kramer (Columbus) High School in 1946. He served in the US Army from 1946 to 1949.
Jim was united in marriage to Carolyn Smith on July 27, 1953, in North Platte. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Kearney State College in 1955 and later earned his Master’s Degree and Specialist Degree from the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Jim was a high school teacher and coach in Campbell from 1954-1958. He taught and coached in North Bend from 1958-1965. James was superintendent of Fairfield Public Schools in Fairfield from 1965-1967. He was involved in the consolidation of the Fairfield, Edgar, and Glenvil school districts in 1966 and served as Sandy Creek Public School’s first superintendent until 1981. James was superintendent at Creighton Public Schools from 1981-1991, when he retired. He and Carolyn then moved to Lincoln.
Jim was a member of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW, AARP, and the Nebraska Association of Retired School Administrators. He volunteered as a precinct Inspector at elections. He was a volunteer Driver Safety Instructor and a Driver Safety Trainer for AARP in Lincoln, and he gave tours at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn of Lincoln; daughters Terri (Roger) Tiedeman of Lincoln, Cathie (Mike) Kluver of Fairfield, and Susan (Dan) Springer of Grand Island; sons Bob (Mitz) Micek of Blue Springs, Mo., and Daniel (Anita) Micek of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers Father Sylvester Micek of Sherman, Ill,, Jerry (Sheri) Micek of Columbus; sisters, Mary Ann (Ed) Donatelli, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Alice Hoff of Columbus; thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 5 at Cathedral of the Risen Christ Catholic Church. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery

Donald G. Reese, North Bend, Jan. 28, age 64

Donald G. Reese died Jan. 28 at his home in North Bend.
Donald was born May 2, 1946, in North Bend to Orville and Evelyn (Detlessen) Reese. He grew up in North Bend and graduated from North Bend High School in 1964. Donald enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 30, 1965, and was stationed in Furth, Germany, during the Vietnam War. He was discharged Jan. 11, 1968.
He married Patsy Hayes in 1969. They later divorced. Donald married Sharon Suhr on Sept. 6, 1985, in North Bend.
Donald moved to Fremont and worked at Commodore Homes (Western Homes) in North Bend. He worked for Magnus Metals in Fremont and then moved back to North Bend, where he worked various jobs as a welder, including Morse Bluff Industries and Smeal Manufacturing Company and farmed for Terry Huscher.
Donald was a member of American Legion Post #340 of Morse Bluff, V.F.W. Post #8223 of North Bend and AmVets Post #20 of North Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; son Dustin Reese of North Bend; sisters Phyllis Attwood of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joyce (Clyde) Ehrich of North Bend and Lois (Keith) Oler of Murphy, N.C.; and one granddaughter.
Memorial service will be Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel with burial at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend. Military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #8223, AmVets Post #20 and American Legion Post #340.

Elise (Vacha) Emanuel, Dodge, Jan. 24, age 89

Elsie Emanuel died Jan. 25 at the Parkview Home in Dodge.
Elsie was born August 7, 1921, in Howells to Joseph and Pauline (Hajek) Vacha. She grew up on a farm near Howells and graduated from Howells High School. She attended Wayne State College in Wayne, and taught school for six years in rural schools in Cuming, Colfax, and Dodge counties.
Elsie married Eugene J. Emanuel on Jan. 6, 1944, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge. After her marriage, the couple farmed three miles west of Webster in Dodge County. They retired in 1987 and moved to North Bend. Elsie had been residing at the Parkview Home since 2008.
In addition to working the farm, Elsie was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend and a member and past president of St. Anne’s Altar Society; member and served as president and secretary of the Omaha Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women and received the Mullen Award as The Outstanding Woman of the Omaha Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women. She served as secretary of the OACCW Alumni. Elsie was a member of Christian Mothers at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge.
Survivors include husband Eugene, sons Wayne (Maria) Emanuel of Beemer, Joseph (Bonita) Emanuel of Hartington, Eugene E. (Kimberly) Emanuel of Monticello, Minn., Kevin (Kathryn) Emanuel of Osceola, Iowa, Chad (Cheryl) Emanuel of Waukee, Iowa, and Roch (Diane) Emanuel of North Bend; daughters Elizabeth (Anthony) Wiese of Dodge, Dorothy (Leo) Showers of Lincoln, Mary (Dean) Von Seggern of Scribner, Sandra (Leo) Blaha of Dodge, and Denise (Glen) Temple of Sioux City, Iowa; sisters Pauline Vrbicky and Agnes (Ervin) Brabec of Clarkson, and Wilma Bolte of North Bend; 30 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Jan. 29 at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, with burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery at Ridgeley near Scribner.

Dale "Dude" Miller, Fremont, Jan. 24, age 72

Dale L. “Dude” Miller died Jan. 24 at his home in Fremont.
Dale was born Aug. 9, 1938, in North Bend to Carl and Amelia (Brandt) Miller. He graduated from North Bend High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957 aboard the USS Winston. Dale returned to North Bend until 1959 when he moved to Fremont.
Dale married Alice M. Jonas on Oct. 24, 1959 in Fremont. He worked for the State Road Department from 1957 to 1959 and then at Hormel’s for 25 years before opening and operating Dude’s Liquor Store from 1984 to 1997. Dale also worked at Fremont Public Schools from 1997 to 2007 and did building maintenance for Christensen Corporation from 2007-2011. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 and the Fremont Veteran’s Club.
Dale is survived by his wife Alice; daughters Rabecca Miller and fiancee Kevin Hennessey of Guttenberg, Iowa, Beverly (Phillip) Brei of Fremont; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were Jan. 28 at the Church of the Nazarene in Fremont with burial at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Military honors were conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard composed of members of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Junior G. Dieckmann, Fremont, Jan. 23, age 85

Junior G. Dieckmann died Jan. 23 at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont.
Junior was born April 28, 1925, to George and Emma (Claussen) Dieckmann at Cheyenne Wells, Colo. He grew up in Scribner and Kennard, Nebr., but lived most of his life in North Bend until moving to Fremont in Feb. 2009.
Junior married Martha J. Kirchmann on May 28, 1949 in North Bend. She passed away Nov. 29, 1993. He was a member of the former First United Methodist Church in North Bend.
He is survived by son Dan (Dee) Dieckmann of Fremont; daughter Jackie (Dennis) Heinrich of Fremont; sister Valetta Leftwich of Fremont; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Jan. 26 at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont with burial at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
