Elsie was born Nov. 15, 1918, in Verdigre to George and Marie (Roubal) Bauman. She graduated from the Verdigre High School and then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Elsie worked in the Livestock Exchange Building in Sioux City, Iowa, as a stenographer until the time of her marriage on Sept. 2, 1939, to Orin Contryman. She then worked in the accounting office with her husband until her retirement in 1985. Elsie was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and was active in various circles throughout the years. Survivors include her daughter Norma (Robert) Stine; daughter-in-law Carolyn Contryman, granddaughter Mary Beth (Skot) Butler, grandsons Paul Stine, Nick (Kristin) Contryman, Alex Contryman, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orin, her parents, son Wesley, brother V.G. Bauman and sisters Sylvia Feala and Wilma Henn. Erma was born July 3, 1933, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Elmer and Alice (Carman) Umstot. She grew up in Woodbine, Iowa, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs. She worked as a caregiver in nursing homes in Iowa and Nebraska. Erma married Frank Lodl on June 28, 1983, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She loved making jewelry, traveling, and attending swap meets with her husband. She is survived by her husband, Frank; son Joe (Chris) Jenkens of Council Bluffs, Iowa; daughter Nola (Dana) Vitor of Independence, Iowa; five stepchildren: Robyn (Gary) Petersen of Hot Springs, S.D., Cary (Kathy) Lodl of Scribner, Allison (Paul) Potadle of Tekamah, Kevin (Marge) Lodl of Morse Bluff, Shelley (Wayde) Bang of North Bend; brother Richard (Mary Jane) Pryor of Salt Lake City, Utah; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Russell was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend, Fort Atkinson Muzzleloaders and served on the State Board for NMLRA. Russell was a decorated state champion Muzzleloader. Russell is survived by son Curtis (Joy) Dockweiler of Fremont; daughters Stacy (Michael) Bennett of Lees Summit, Mo., Tracy (Brad) Fricke of Omaha; sisters Sandra (James) Stevens of Mineral Wells, Texas, Letha (Loren) Finkhouse of Aurora, Colo. and nine grandchildren. Janel was raised on the family farm near Morse Bluff. She graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 1973 from North Bend Central High School and graduated valedictorian of her Class of 1976 from Wayne State College. Janel was united in marriage with Michael Harnan on Dec. 28, 1974, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend. God blessed this marriage with two children, Brenda and William. As an accomplished trombonist Janel played in high school and college bands, jazz bands and orchestras for many years. After moving to Pleasant Hill, Iowa, in 1982, Janel became a member of Grand View Lutheran Church where she sang in the chancel choir and was a founding member of the Grand View Brass group that continues to this day. When their children joined the Iowa Youth Chorus, Janel and Michael were chaperones on several choir tours including regional and international tours. These included choir competitions in Bremen, Germany, and the Llandgollen International Musical Eisteddfod competition and tour to England, Scotland and Wales, as well as an artist in residence tour of Guatemala and El Salvador. Prior to her retirement in 2014, Janel worked for 37 years as a medical technologist and laboratory scientist in the special chemistry and toxicology laboratory at Iowa Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Janel was an avid reader and very gifted at counted cross stitch. A cherished mother and wife, Janel was an accomplished cook famous for her homemade soups. The family would gather every Sunday for a Janel-cooked meal fit for a king. Janel is survived by her husband Michael, daughter Brenda (James) Sandler of Des Moines, Iowa, son William Harnan of Waukee, Iowa; brothers Tony (Linda) Soukup of Purcellville, Va., Scott (Susie) Soukup of Lake Villa, Ill., Jack (Nancy) Soukup of Davey, Jerry (Barbara) Soukup of Morse Bluff; sister-in-law Sandy Soukup of Omaha; brother-in-law Scott Harnan (Sarah Edwards) of Des Moines, Iowa; six nephews, one niece and other extended family. Bill was born July 3, 1946, in Columbus. He lived most of his life in North Bend. He owned North Bend Transfer and was co-owner of Kruger Feed & Seed. Bill married Linda Freeman on Feb. 21, 1968, at the former Clyde Catholic Church in rural North Bend. Bill enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Linda; son Bill Giddings Jr. of North Bend; daughters Stacie (Jim) Wieneke of West Point, Sarah (Shanon) Petersen of Douglas, Wyo., and Kristie (Rhet) Mehaffey of North Bend; brother Jerry Kruger of North Bend; sister Karen Fritzinger of Lincoln; six grandchildren: Austin (Jessica) Wieneke, Dalton Wieneke, Colton Giddings, Tanner Fraas, Shelby Petersen and Lane Mehaffey; great-granddaughter, Chesney Wieneke; and nieces and nephews. Donna Ruth Jones passed away Nov. 4, 2016, in Cupertino, California. Donna was born in Omaha, on Mar. 20, 1929, to Arthur O. Jones and Mattie B. Jones.
After early years in Rapid City, S.D., her family moved to North Bend. Donna was educated in North Bend Schools, graduating in 1947. During her high school years she was employed at the North Bend Eagle where she learned the printing trade and become a skilled linotype operator. After graduation she moved to Lincoln to work at the Lincoln Journal. Donna was the first woman, and at the time the youngest person, to become a member of the International Typographical Union. In 1949 she married Harold Earl of Lincoln and entered Nebraska Wesleyan College while Harold finished his last year at that institution. The couple moved to New Jersey for two years before moving to California where they bought a home in the small village of Cupertino. After a divorce, Donna entered San Jose State University to study psychology while working evenings as a typesetter and printer at the San Jose Mercury News. In 1956 she married George Burt and they purchased the house in Cupertino which Donna and Harold had bought earlier. She divorced George but kept the house, which was to be her residence for the rest of her life. Donna finished a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in cybernetics, both through San Jose State University. She continued to work as a printer and typesetter at Bay Area newspapers through her years as a student and until she retired. From childhood, Donna struggled with asthma and she found solace in literature and books of all kinds. She was a person with high intelligence and wide-ranging interests who had struggled to receive college degrees while supporting herself and husbands through persistent employment, wrestling with the different roles as student, housewife, printer and homemaker. Donna was always proud of her membership in the International Typographical Union (ITU) which she maintained for 63 years. Donna was preceded in death by her parents Arthur O. Jones and Mattie Kern Jones and her sister Joanne Jones Sainten. She is survived by her brother Noel K. Jones of North Carolina (and Maine), her nieces Adrienne Sainten and Kim Sainten, and nephew of Michael Sainten of California and by niece Jeanette Sainten of Florida. Published Jan. 11, 2017 Ken L. Kenneth was born on Feb. 10, 1936, in Primghar, Iowa, to Willie and Viola (Scherner) Petersen. He grew up in northwest Iowa along with 12 siblings. Kenneth graduated from Sutherland High School in Sutherland, Iowa, in 1954 and served two years in the U.S. Army. He married Marilyn Geuther on Sept. 9, 1961, in Sutherland. Kenneth’s working years were spent mostly in the agricultural field, managing hog confinements and agricultural sales. He dearly loved spectator sports, especially so when his kids and grandkids were involved. Kenneth was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend, where he held several offices through the years. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Fremont; sons Douglas (Kay) Petersen of Garden City, Kan., Steven (Tammy) Petersen of Overland Park, Kan; grandchildren Ryan, Mark, Kalleigh and Brianna; sisters Beverly, Verleen and Gloria; and brothers Gordan and Virgil. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers Delmar, Bernard, Wilbur and Richard; three sisters Margarite, Phyllis and Verdeen; and infant granddaughter, Janine Petersen. Marilyn was born Nov. 29, 1940, to Ralph and Anita (Jurgens) Hull, in North Bend. She moved to the Fremont area in 1947 and graduated from Fremont High School in 1958. She married Jack Hanson in 1959. They divorced in 1978. Marilyn married Jerome “Jerry” Sokolovsky on Aug. 27, 1983, in Fremont. She worked for Creative Sales, Inc., for over 45 years. She is survived by husband, Jerry; daughter Tammy (Jerry) Haugaard of Fremont; sons Robert “Rob” Hanson of Fremont and Rick Hanson of Deltona, Fla., sister Sharon Wolfe of Fremont; three grandchildren: Dustin Venneman, Lacey Venneman, Caitlyn Venneman, all of Fremont, one great grandson, Trevor Brumbaugh, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, infant brother Donald William Hull; brother-in-law Warren Wolfe; and mother-in-law Gladys Sokolovsky. John was born to John O. and Marie (Vavak) Hines on Aug. 19, 1927, in Morse Bluff. He was a graduate of North Bend High School. John married Adeline Vanek on Feb. 8, 1949, at the Presbyterian Church in Prague. He lived in Morse Bluff his entire life, where he farmed. He enjoyed stock car racing and fishing. John was a member and an elder of the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. He is survived by his wife, Adeline; sons Jim (Diane) Hines of Morse Bluff, John (Nancy) Hines of Colleyville, Texas, and Mark (Patrice) Hines of Morse Bluff; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Irv and sister Lillian Bauer. His funeral service was Oct. 11 at the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. The Rev. Michael Hill officiated. She was born to F. Harold and Leona (Karpisek) Soukup on Nov. 12, 1962, in Schuyler. Sheri grew up in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School in 1981. On November 16, 1981, she married George Gocken in Fremont. The couple moved to Grand Island before George joined the U.S. Navy. While George was in training, Sheri moved back to Fremont. After training, George and Sheri traveled to Italy, Tennessee, Iceland, Florida, and London where George was stationed. Sheri worked in retail sales for the Navy Exchange until George’s retirement in 2001, when they resided in Florida. Sheri managed the furniture department at Big Lots. In 2006 they moved to Nebraska to be close to family. Sheri worked for Hampl Transportation in Morse Bluff. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. She is survived by her husband George; son George Paul of North Bend; daughter Amanda Lee (Trevor) Gocken of Jacksonville, Fla.; mother Leona Soukup of North Bend; brothers Greg (Diane) Soukup of Hooper, Bruce (Kathy) Soukup of Strang, Kenneth (Heidi) Soukup of Orlando, Fla.; sisters Debbie (Cory) Peden of Portland, Ore., Teri (Jim) McCabe of Manson, Iowa; and one granddaughter, Hana Joyce. J. Joellen Grovijohn of Nickerson died Sept. 5 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
Joellen was born March 12, 1941, in Sidney to Joseph and Irene (Hazlett) Carlson. She lived in Sidney until the age of 16 and then lived in the Boise and Nampa, Idaho area for six years. She moved to North Bend in 1962 and later lived at Snyder, Columbus and then Nickerson. Joellen married Richard F. Grovijohn on Jan. 9, 1965, in Wahoo. He preceded her in death on May 21, 1974. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Snyder. She worked at Campbell’s Soup Company in Fremont for three years and then Blevins Popcorn Plant in North Bend for seven years. She has worked at nursing homes in Beemer, West Point and Pierce. Joellen managed the Howells Retirement Center in Howells for three years. She retired in 2001. Joellen is survived by sons Ricky L. Grovijohn of Omaha and Jed A. Grovijohn of Nickerson and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Kenneth Carlson. He was born on Feb. 8, 1937, in Dodge to Charles and Barbara (Peplinski) Jelinek. Lambert grew up in Dodge and North Bend. He worked for Commodore Homes in North Bend prior to joining the service. Lambert served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1980. He was a Medical Specialist and retired after 17 years. Lambert married Gertrude Korsch Aug. 12, 1965, in Bamberg, Germany. He came back to North Bend in 2004. Lambert had a great love for animals. Survivors include many special friends including Janice (Robert) Leffers of Schuyler, Bernice Conkling of North Bend, Francis (JoAnn) Zakovec of Morse Bluff, many other friends and his dog, Jeanie. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Karl and brother Allen. A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Sept. 1, at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. The Rev. James Jost will be officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service. She grew up in rural Hooper and graduated from Scribner High School. Delores married LeRoy G. Ferguson on Dec. 17, 1944, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hooper. LeRoy preceded her in death April 28, 2000. They moved to the family farm near Webster and farmed there until moving to Fremont in 1976. Delores supported her husband on the farm. She loved her children and grandchildren. Delores was very dedicated to her family. She was a past member of the Webster Card Club, and St. John’s Ladies Aide at Ridgeley. She was a current member of Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. Delores is survived by her sons Ron (Debby) Ferguson of Katy, Texas., Bruce (Patricia)Ferguson of Scribner and Steven (Barb) Ferguson of Hooper; daughter Barbara Mailhiot of Henderson, Nev.; sister-in-law Elaine Phillips of Oklahoma City, Okla.; grandchildren Jeff Ferguson, Jeannette (Bryan) Barker, Kathryn (Charles) Krenzer, Bradley (Bethany) Ferguson, Matthew Ferguson, Scott Ferguson, Stacy (Chris) Nolen, Shea (Joel) Davidson, Jeremy (Allison) Ferguson, Ryan (Amy) Ferguson, Laura (Rick) Bayer and Michelle Mailhiot. She grew up in Fremont and was a 1962 graduate of Bergan High School and attended the College of St. Mary’s in Omaha. Marlene married Lou Filipi on May 7, 1966, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. She lived in Norfolk and was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company from 1969 until 1973. Marlene then worked for Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company as a financial representative until retiring in June of 2009. She has been residing at Legge’s Lake near North Bend since 2009. Her husband, Lou, died March 21, 2014. Marlene was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. She was actively involved in the parish and served as an EHMC. Every Saturday in the fall she was wearing red, cheering on her beloved Husker football team. She never missed a game and traveled to many away games too. Marlene was the ultimate hostess and loved to entertain family and friends. The lake house was her favorite place and she always made everyone feel welcome. Family was the most important thing to Marlene and spending time with her kids, grandkids, and in recent years her fiancé, was truly special for her. She is survived by son Michael (Julie) Filipi of Battle Creek; daughter Sheila Filipi of Blacklick, Ohio; brother Dwaine Ulrich of Denver, Col.; fiancé Ron Kracl of North Bend; grandchildren Ashley and Nathan of Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Her funeral Mass was held Aug. 23 at St. Charles Catholic Church. The Rev. Keith Rezac officiated. Marvin Dean Chesley died July 17 in Omaha. He was born on Feb. 22, 1930, in North Bend to Carl and Tillie Chesley. He was the oldest of three children.
At age 9, while assisting his father in the field, he injured his left arm in an accident. He later lost the arm due to gangrene. He excelled in high school basketball and football and continued to play tennis, pursue hunting and fishing and many physical activities. He graduated from North Bend High School in 1947. Marvin followed his mother’s advice, which eventually led to a career as a CPA. While pursuing this path, he met and married Patricia Ann Malady, and they had five children. After graduating he worked for several accounting firms before becoming a partner at Kading, Chesley and Woodke. Throughout his adult years he was active in Toastmasters and Elks Club, and he was a member of St. Gerald Catholic Church. He also resided in Niobrara for part of the year. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, brother Gayle Chesley, brother-in-law Eldon Kracl. He is survived by daughters Michele (Pat) Evert, Maureen (Mark) Mancuso, Kathy Griffin (Steve), Amy (Jon) LeGrand; son Steve (Barb) Chesley; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister Arlene Kracl of Arvada, Colo.; sister-in-law Joan Chesley of North Bend; and many nieces and nephews. Charles was born to Leonard and Clare (Gaughen) Iske in rural Dodge on Feb. 18, 1939. Charles grew up on a farm west of Webster. He graduated from North Bend High School in 1956 and went on to farm with his father. Charles served in the Army Reserves from 1962-1968. On Sept. 12, 1965, Charles married Gorgene Dunklau at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fremont. They lived northwest of North Bend until 2001 when they moved into town. Charles farmed full-time until 1986, when he began driving truck for Bell Creek of Arlington. He later drove for Dolezal Sand and Gravel and Reznicek Farms part time. Charles was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend, AmVets Post 20 of North Bend, and the North Bend Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. He was born June 13, 1944, in North Bend to Leonard and Fern (Blankenberg) Dodge. Tim graduated from North Bend High School in 1962. He operated Dodge Well Co. with his father and brother and was also a well driller for Grosch Irrigation, among other local jobs. Tim was a 36-year member of the North Bend Fire Department and former fire chief. He was a 27-year member of the Nebraska State Fire School Committee and past president of the Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighter Association. He was inducted into the Nebraska Fire School Hall of Fame. Dolores was born Oct. 22, 1925, in St. Louis, Mo., to Erwin L. and Anna (Busse) Schneider. She grew up and graduated from high school in St. Louis, and attended Harris Teacher College and St. Louis Business College. On Sept. 16, 1951, Delores married the Rev. Roy A. Beckmann at Hope Lutheran Church in St. Louis. The couple moved to various cities in Colorado and in Nebraska, where Roy was called to minister to congregations. In 1965, Dolores and Roy moved to North Bend. Dolores worked at the North Bend Eagle and then was the North Bend City Clerk for 25 years, until her retirement in 1996. Dolores moved to Lincoln in 1998, to be close to family. Dolores was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln and was a former member at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend. While her husband was an active pastor, she was a member of the Ladies Aid, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, served as a Sunday school teacher and member of the Piecemakers Quilting Group. Delores was a certified volunteer in Braille for the Lutheran Board for Missions and treasurer for the Salvation Army in North Bend. Dolores was a member of Chatter Day at Tabitha Village. Anna married Adolph V. Nesladek on Feb. 13, 1945, in Wahoo. Adolph died Aug. 19, 1979. Anna was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend and St. Anne’s Altar Society. She was active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Cedar Hill before moving to North Bend. Anna was also a member of the V.F.W. Post 8223 Auxiliary at North Bend. Delrae was born April 30, 1942, in North Bend to Gerald and Ruth (Napier) Eaton. He grew up in North Bend and was a 1960 graduate of North Bend High School. Delrae married Janice Eckstein on April 29, 1961, at the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. He worked at Blevins Popcorn Plant in North Bend for a couple years and then began his career at Hormel in Fremont for 49-plus years. He retired in July 18, 2011. Delrae was a member of the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department, served on the North Bend Elementary School Board and belonged to the Jaycees. In his earlier years, he played Legion baseball and town team baseball, and was a member of the over 40 “Babe’s Bar” softball team. Delrae enjoyed bowling, which he did for 58 years. He loved deer and duck hunting and fishing. Delrae especially enjoyed going to Minnesota fishing with his wife and their fishing buddies for the past 40 years. His greatest joy in life was being able to attend his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities. She was a past board member and district representative of the Nebraska Extension Club. She lived in North Bend and attended school there. Celine was a 1950 graduate of North Bend High School. Celine married Richard “Dick” Papa on Oct. 3, 1953, at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. She has lived in Fremont since 1955. Celine worked at JC Penney’s for seven years. She and her husband owned Papa Trucking and Grading where she served as the bookkeeper. Celine enjoyed bowling for many years and traveling in the motor home around the country, writing poetry and most importantly spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont and St. Patrick’s Women. Elsie was born July 23, 1923, in Schuyler to Louis Kracl and Francis (Slavik) Kracl. Her family moved to Cedar Bluffs when Elsie was 12 years old. After her mother passed away she stayed on the farm to help her dad and brother Bill. She moved to North Bend with her dad in 1958 and worked at Watts Store and Campbell’s. She worked and co-owned Lumir’s Bar for 17 years. She moved to the farm in O’Neill in 1979 where she was involved in farming and cattle. Elsie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved to cross stitch. She had made quilts for all 12 of her grandchildren, several of her 11 great grandchildren and numerous quilts for family and friends. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bill and Eldon Kracl, sister Helen Holmes, son Alan (Skeeter) Ratkovec and great-granddaughter Tina Ratkovec. She also enjoyed traveling to Alaska. On Sept. 26, 1958, she married Anton Eckstein in Fremont. They lived near Linwood where Joan was a housewife and homemaker. Donna J. Anderson was born Oct. 8, 1946, in Schuyler, to Robert T. and Evelyn B. (Ehernberger) French Sr. She graduated from Schuyler High School in 1964 and was a 1965 graduate of Bahner Beauty College in Fremont. Donna married Richard Rothanzl in Feb. 1964 to which four children were born. They lived in North Bend where Donna owned and operated Donna’s Beauty Shop. Donna also worked at Country Beauty Shop, Birchwood Manor, St. Joseph’s Villa, Schuyler Nursing Home and at Dale Electronics for nine years. She married Thomas Anderson in July of 1988 and they made their home in Columbus. Donna worked as a beautician at the Golden Living Center in Columbus. A big part of her life was her kids and grandkids. Donna loved to travel having visited every state except Alaska. Donna served in several capacities in politics. She was the 2004 Nebraska 3rd District Democratic candidate for Congress and was the treasurer for the Nebraska Democratic Party. Donna was a past school board member for North Bend Elementary School and later for Platte County District III. She was a member of the Federated Church in Columbus. Genevieve was born April 30, 1917, to Robert and Cecile (Wilson) Miner near Tecumseh. She grew up on the family farm, attended District 19 Spring Creek School and Tecumseh High School. On Oct. 2, 1937, she was married to Henry Dahl in Bedford, Iowa. They had a son Robert Denis and a daughter Holly Lynn. They lived in Graf area east of Tecumseh until the early 1940s when she and her husband went with his parents Harry and Margaretha Dahl to Bennington. They assisted his parents in the operation of their locker plant/grocery store. After a few years they went back to the Tecumseh area where they were involved in farming with her parents and later on their own. Genevieve was known to have hundreds of geese at a time. They moved to Colorado in 1958. They raised Shetland ponies and had a business of pony rides for children. In 1959, they moved to Fremont, and in 1963 they moved to North Bend where they owned and operated the sale barn until it burned down. Genevieve had worked as an aid and later as a cook at Birchwood Manor. She also worked at the Bowling Alley and was manager of the Nutrition Site for eight years. She retired in 1988. She and Henry had Dahl’s Discount Store for several years in North Bend. They liked going to auctions. Genevieve was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Ruth Chapter #119 in North Bend. She had a great love of family, traveling, casino trips, bingo, shopping, cooking, her Christmas Village set (left up all year), ceramics, teddy bears and root beer candy. She inherited the “Homestead Acres” in 1992. It is the original Robert Dew homestead. Henry and Genevieve moved to Pathfinder Place in Fremont at the end of 2010. The celebrated their 74th anniversary on Oct. 2, 2011, and Henry passed away three weeks later. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, parents Robert and Cecile Miner, and infant son Larry, and son-in-law Richard Wennstedt. She is survived by her son Robert (Sharon) Denis Dahl of St. Paul, daughter Holly (Dave) Henrickson of Dodge. He was raised on a farm north of North Bend and attended Rural School District 10 until 1955, when his family moved into town and then attended North Bend Public Schools. He worked at McGinn’s Grocery Store in North Bend and learned the trade of meat cutting. While working as a meat cutter for Hinky Dinky, he moved to Fremont in 1972. He began his career at Hormel’s in Fremont in 1974, retiring in 2004. Ron married Diane (Carlstedt) Von Seggern on June 5, 1992, at Sinai Lutheran Church in Fremont and to this union he gained three children, whom he loved dearly. Ron had an inventive mind and patented an exercise machine called “The Arm Bender.” He enjoyed his family immensely and was proud of recently becoming a grandfather. Ron was an avid Husker football fan, enjoyed boating, fishing, playing pitch, his pets, traveling, and his latest hobby of restoring a 1959 Cushman Scooter. Tamie was born Jan. 6, 1967, in Fort Belvoir, Va., to Thomas and Alice (Jenkins) Newman. She was raised in Torrington, Wyo., graduating from Mitchell High School in 1985. She lived in various places in northwest Nebraska before moving to North Bend. Tamie was employed with Target for 18 years serving as a manager, before she started working for US Cellular and Selectel Wireless as a regional manager. Tamie enjoyed gardening, cooking and traveling with her family. She was a loving mother and wife and was very proud of her children. She loved attending her children’s activities and spending time with her family. Music and watching movies was also something she enjoyed with her children. Helen was a 1950 graduate of Scribner High School and attended Wayne State College for two summers to receive her Normal Teaching Certificate. Helen married Harold C. Spath Nov. 5, 1950, at the First Congregational Church in Scribner. Harold entered the US Army shortly after their marriage and Helen taught at District 27 at Webster. When Harold returned from Korea the couple lived in Tacoma, Wash., until his discharge. They farmed west of Webster until Harold’s death July 25, 1989. Helen moved to North Bend in 1990. She worked at Birchwood Manor in North Bend until retiring in 2003. Helen was a former member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Snyder, where she was active in Ladies Aide and Sunday School. She became a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend when she moved to North Bend. She was a member of V.F.W. Auxiliary in Snyder for 25 years then transferred to North Bend V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 8223 and where she served as president for many years. She was a charter member of Morse Bluff/North Bend Veterans Memorial Park Committee. Helen is survived by sons Fred (Doreen) Spath, Urbandale, Iowa; Jim (Mary) Spath, Webster; Steward (Kris) Spath, Eagle; daughters Rebecca (Warren) Renner, Webster; Treva (Larry) Farris, Nebraska City; daughter-in-law Karen McVicker, Hampton, Iowa; 20 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way. Esther lived in Tilden until her junior year of high school when she moved to Elkhorn where she graduated. She married Mervin Otte Jan. 18, 1939, in Tilden. After marriage they farmed for a couple of years near Tilden and then moved to rural Morse Bluff where they continued to farm until moving into Morse Bluff in 1984. Esther was a member of United Presbyterian Church; O.E.S. Ruth Chapter 119 and was a past Worthy Matron; American Legion Auxiliary Unit 340 of Morse Bluff, United Presbyterian Women, PEO and Get Together Grannies Club. Survivors include sons Rolland (Mary Ann) Otte of Morse Bluff and David (Lois) Otte of Linwood; daughters Diane Powers of Omaha and Carol (George) Zwickel of Shenandoah, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Ray was born Aug. 16, 1936, on the family farm near Linwood to George and Rose (Houfek) Thege. He attended District 78 and graduated from Linwood High School. In 1957 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a tank driver, being honorably discharged in 1959. Ray married Pauline Zakovec March 24, 1962, in Bersford, S.D. Ray worked for the North Bend trailer factory and farmed near Linwood. In 1984 they moved to David City where Ray was one of the original employees for Timpte, working there for over 20 years. He was a life member of the Prague Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. Ray is survived by his wife Pauline, sons Curt (Denise) Thege of Lincoln, Doug (Pam) Thege of Gillman, Iowa, James (Nancy) Thege of David City; daughter Roxane (Don) Heiser of Weston, six grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren; brothers Richard Thege of North Bend, Don (Alyce) Thege of Schuyler; sisters-in-law Mary Ann Thege of Norfolk and Marlene Thege of North Bend. Dorothy grew up in the Weston and Wahoo areas. She attended rural school in Weston and St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Wahoo. She married Melvin John Kavan on Sept. 14, 1948, in Wahoo. They operated a farm near Morse Bluff and cared for a registered brown swiss dairy cattle herd. In 1965, they were featured as the Farm Family of the Week on WOWT. She was a homemaker, enjoyed helping on the farm, did the farm secretarial work, gardened and worked in her flower garden. She was known for creative cooking and developing her own recipes. In 2011, one of her recipes won a recipe contest and was published in the All Across Nebraska Cookbook as the Morse Bluff representative. She was a member of the Heritage Club, past member of the Saunders County N.F.O. and the Brown Swiss Breeders Association. In the past she was a sponsor for 4-Hers at Aksarben and the Nebraska State Fair and a chapter mother for North Bend FHA. Dorothy served on the Bohemia Precinct Election Board for several years. She was a Neo-Life distributor. She was preceded in death by husband Melvin, daughter Angela Ann Kavan, her parents, brothers Leonard (died in infancy), Rudy and George Ludvik, sisters Mary Ann Johnson and Agnes Kavan, brothers-in-law Lloyd Johnson, Albert Kavan and Ernie Blatny, sisters-in-law Lillian Ludvik, Norma Kavan, Irene Blatny, and Delores Nitz and nephew Michael Williams. Maxine grew up in Beatrice She worked for Swift & Company from 1935-1942. Maxine married Don Nordboe June 20, 1942, at the Methodist Church in Beatrice. After marriage they moved to Vine Grove, Kent., for the remainder of WWII, working on the base at the dress shop. They relocated to Salina, Kan., before moving to Nickerson where she worked for Fremont Public Schools as the head pastry chef. She settled in North Bend in 1990 and came to Fremont in 2014. Maxine was a former member of the United Methodist Church in North Bend. Survivors include her sons Donald C. Nordboe of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Roger (Marie) Nordboe of Ames, Jerry (Virginia) of North Bend; grandchildren Josh of Chinook, Mont., Jeremy and Ryan of North Bend and Melissa of Ames; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Jameson and Jefferson of Chinook, Mont., and Kaylynn of Fremont. Betty was born Aug. 14, 1924, in West Point to Arthur and Mary (Moody) Slagle. She grew up in West Point. She married Marvin E. Meier June 29, 1946, in Marysville, Kansas The couple moved to North Bend in January of 1957. Marvin died June 15, 1982. Betty worked at Birchwood Manor for 28 years. She also worked at the Corner Cafe and cleaned commercial buildings in North Bend. Betty is a member of United Presbyterian Church and VFW Auxiliary Post 8223 of North Bend, where she has held several offices. Virginia started working at the age of 17 as a nanny for a couple of families. She married Charles Beranek on July 31, 1943, in Wahoo. When Charles returned home from the war, the couple farmed near Morse Bluff until their retirement when they moved into Morse Bluff. She was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge and American Legion Post 340 Auxiliary of Morse Bluff and V.F.W. Post 8223 Auxiliary of North Bend. She was a member of Saunders County Czech Singers and Just Neighbors Extension Club. She loved animals, birds, farming, traveling and playing cards. Survivors include niece Jean (Stanley) Shavlik and other family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, son John and sisters, Marian and Zdenka. Donald Hladky was born July 6, 1943. His family moved to North Bend in 1956. After he graduated from North Bend High School, Donald enlisted in the Navy, serving in California as a electronic technician.
In July 1971 Donald married Susan McLaughlin in Saratoga, Calif. They later made their home in Nampa, Idaho. Despite many years of valiant fight, cancer took his life Feb. 5. Services were held in Nampa with burial at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery at Eagle. Don is survived by his wife Sue, daughter Jessica, son Nate, seven grandchildren and a great grandchild, all of Nampa; sisters Vernamae Hladky and Marcella (Richard) Brousek of Omaha; brothers Raymond (Donna) of Tekamah and Richard of Fremont. He attended North Bend High School and then served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from Jan. 4, 1951, to Aug. 5, 1954, serving on the USS Uhlmann. After his military service, he was employed by Continental Can Company in Omaha until his retirement. He was a farmer at heart and an outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting. He raised wild game birds, as well as chickens. He was a member of the American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff, VFW Post 8223 of North Bend and Pohocco Lutheran Church, south of Fremont. He is survived by his brother, Jerry (Beverly) Ruff of Omaha and sister Verna Owens of Omaha; nephews Patrick Luger of North Bend, Mark (Shelly) Luger of Alliance, Steve (Rhonda) Ustohal of Fremont, Mick (Keri) Ruff of Omaha; nieces Jackie (Don) Kadlec of Fremont, Sherry Ustohal of Omaha, Jenni (Mic) Kelly of Savage, Minn.; 16 great nieces and great nephews. He lived in Morse Bluff until his marriage to Patricia Emanuel on June 5, 1946, at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. They lived in North Bend for 11 years and then moved back to the farm near Morse Bluff where he farmed until retiring in 1985. He continued to live on the farm until his death. Kavan also did concrete work for new construction. He was a construction foreman for two years when the new North Bend Central High School was built. Kavan was a person who had to be busy at all times. He was always able to find something productive to do so there was “no sitting around to get fat.” Kavan was a member of the Morse Bluff Volunteer Fire Department, St. George’s Catholic Church in Morse Bluff, Knights of Columbus Council #3736 in North Bend, District 54 School Board and the Eagles Club. He is survived by sons, Larry Kavan, Jerry Kavan and Gene (Deb) Kavan all of Morse Bluff; daughters Marilyn McDaniel of Morse Bluff and Bev (Alan) Ratkovec of Lincoln; sister Wilma Vlcek of Omaha; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Kenneth and Barbara Emanuel of Carson City, Nev., Richard and Celine Papa of Fremont; 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. After graduating from Grand Island Senior High School he attended Midland Lutheran College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Bud had a 31-year career in the pharmaceutical industry. After retiring in 1997, he and Sally enjoyed spending time together while fishing and hiking. The sometimes frustrating game of golf was made enjoyable by close friends. His passion for grilling and barbecuing was enjoyed by countless family members and friends. Edward was born October 10, 1924, to Joseph and Josephine (Mach) Sousek near Prague. At the age of two, the family moved to a farm near Cedar Bluffs. Edward attended District 79 and graduated from Cedar Bluffs High school in 1942. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army during WWII from Jan. 1945 to Nov. 1946. He was a Corporal and served as a personnel clerk while stationed in Japan before his discharge. He received the Expert Infantryman Badge, Asiatic Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Army Occupation Medal. After his discharge, he joined his father on the dairy farm. On April 29, 1952, he married Edith I. Ostry at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Prague. He continued to work as a dairy farmer until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Cedar Hill, honorary member of the Knights of Columbus 3736, KD55W, FCSLA, Mid-Am Dairy Association, continuous member of the American Legion 340 for 70 years of Morse Bluff, VFW post 8223 of North Bend, charter member of the Morse Bluff Rural Fire district for 24 years and served as secretary and treasurer.
