On May 21, 1950, Don was united in marriage to Mary Lee Rogge at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn. They lived in Fremont until moving to a farm near Auburn in 1951. The couple would be blessed with four children: Lorry, Becky, Bill, and Larry. The family lived in Nemaha before moving into Auburn in the spring of 1966. After college, Don began a career in the trucking industry. After moving close to Auburn, however, he started farming with his father-in-law, Alfred Rogge. He raised livestock in addition to crop farming. Even as he farmer, Don remained a trucker at heart, and later started a trucking business with his sons. Don was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, had been a member of the Nemaha School Board, the Auburn Country Club, and a bowling team at one time. He was a “sports nut” and huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs. He could recite many stats and remember players from the Cardinals from many years past. Don loved to have coffee around town and enjoyed visiting with his many friends. Most important to Don was his family. He seldom missed an activity that his children, later his grandchildren, and then great-grandchildren, were involved in. He also wasn’t above helping the coaches or officials from the stands as he thought necessary. On the morning of Tuesday, April 10, 2018, Don had coffee at his usual spots and then headed to the farm, where he loved to spend time. He passed away at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 1 day. His parents preceded him in death. Many people will keep wonderful memories of Don, most of all his wife Mary Lee of Auburn; daughters and sons-in-law Lorry (Terry) Van Gundy of Auburn; Becky (Lynn) Woltemath of Cook; sons and daughters-in-law Bill (Mary Lyn) Kruger of Auburn; Larry (Kim) Kruger of Auburn; grandchildren and spouses Staci Edgington (Joe), Brook Van Gundy, Hannah Van Gundy (Terry Jones); Mandy Husing (Ryan), Megin Grant (David), Bryce Brady (Kerry), Adam Kruger (Heidi), Chad Kruger, Brian Kruger (Tabitha), Nate Kruger (Raven), Jenna Kruger; great-grandchildren Kylie and Austen Edgington; Graycen, Griffin and Finnlee Jones; Ashley, Abby, and Alyssa Husing; Mollie and Leah Grant; Alexus McKeithen and Anson Kruger; Emery Tardy and Weston Kruger; sisters-in-law Helene Handley of Lincoln; Colleen Knapp (Bert) of Fort Worth, Texas. A funeral service was April 13 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn, officiated by Rev. Ken Miller. Rick Janssen was soloist, with accompaniment by Donna Caspers. On Feb. 22, 1980, Allan was united in marriage to Carole Longson at Eppley Chapel in Omaha. They lived for a time in Omaha before moving to the North Bend area where he, with his own sweat and muscle, build their home. Allan was a Tree Arborist, and general manager of Enfield Tree Service, Inc. You could say he did it all as a mechanic and equipment operator. He had a love for the outdoors, custom cars and playing keno. Even though Allan used “colorful” language, he was a stand-up guy. He always had a “Get it done” attitude and lived his life every day as if it was his last. Words that best describe him are patriarch, motivated, visionary and a generous leader. Milestones in Allan’s life that were of importance to him were: meeting and marrying Carole, his tree business, hunting trips as well his trip to Africa. Of course, his true pride was his custom Mercury which won numerous awards and admiration from fellow car lovers. He was a member of the Dunbar Street Cruisers. He enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs and would root for anyone who was playing the Dallas Cowboys. He loved his steak and a good cup of coffee. He did have a few pet peeves, like people who don’t listen, no work ethic, lack of common sense and disrespectful children. In the end, he is remembered by his family for his generosity, love for his family, his work ethic, “big” presence, his sense of adventure, along with his get it done attitude, love of nature and most of all, his love for helping others. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Jeff and brother Ray Enfield. Allen is survived by his wife Carole of North Bend, daughter Conni Jo Gatrost of Elkhorn, sons Tim and Daniel of Hastings, brother Larry Enfield of North Bend, seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Marie was born on Sept. 5, 1922, to Bohumil and Anna (Justyn) Kopecky and grew up on a farm outside of Octavia. She was the sixth of seven children and spoke about having to share chores and beds and clothes and even bath water. “Everything. Back then we just shared everything.” Marie attended Marietta Catholic School and graduated in 1940. She then attended nursing school at St. Catherine’s in Omaha, graduating in 1943 before enlisting in the United States Army. She went through basic training in Santa Anna, Calif., before being called upon to serve in WWII in the Army Nurse Corp. Marie was stationed in both Guam and Tokyo and would speak about caring for the wounded soldiers and “how much those kids suffered” with no acknowledgement of the fact that she was just a kid herself. Marie completed her service in 1946 as a First Lieutenant. Marie met her husband, Harry John Johnson, at a dance at the Schuyler Ballroom and only agreed to dance with him because he wasn’t short! They married on Nov. 18, 1948, at Presentation Marietta Catholic Church outside of Bellwood. They then opened Johnson Farm Equipment in North Bend in 1950 and bought a house there just before Christmas in 1951. It was in this house that they raised their four children, Galen Lee, Rodney Allen, Thomas Jeffrey and Rita Marie. Harry passed away on April 12, 1980, and no doubt was first in line to welcome his sweet Marie to her new home in heaven. There she also joins her parents, all of her siblings, a grandson, Zeth Michael, and many other family and friends. Marie’s children all went on to marry—Galen to JoAnn, Rodney to Nancy, Tom to Marlene and Rita to Michael. This gave way to Marie becoming a grandma—a role she cherished more than anything. She had 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. And what a Granny she was! It was rare that you ever saw Marie without one of her grandkids in tow. She spoiled them with love and Pop-Tarts and attention and the occasional $10 bill. There were many things Marie loved in life, foremost being God, country and family. She also loved raisin toast, flowers, sweatshirts with birds on them, polka music, playing cards with her friends, writing letters, Benny Hill, kolaches, going on drives in the country and the harmonica. Yes, Marie played the harmonica! Marie was a long-time member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend, a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and honored as a 50-year member of the American Legion. She has received special recognition from the Chamber of Commerce, St. Catherine’s School of Nursing and was recently featured in Forever Heroes, a book by Joyce Winfield that shared WWII stories from Nebraska Veterans. Funeral Mass was Jan. 26, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. The Rev. Keith Rezac officiated. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery, North Bend, with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff, VFW Post 8223 and AMVETS Post 20 of North Bend.
