T.L. was born on August 16, 1943, in Leon, Iowa, and was raised in the Clearfield and Lenox area where the Hendersons have farmed for five generations. Tom was baptized and was active in the United Presbyterian Church of Lenox. He excelled at baseball, basketball, football and 4-H where he enjoyed showing livestock and being on championship state and national livestock judging teams. Tom graduated from Lenox High School in 1962 and continued his education at Iowa State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 1967. Tom and Cheryl J. Rickers were married on Nov. 24, 1968. They raised two sons, Ty Thomas and Cole Thomas, now both residing and working in Austin, Texas. Ty is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas. Cole, a former Army officer, is a computer software director. Tom loved music and his country. He was a member of Iowa State Singers and Men’s Glee Club. He also sang with Der Liederkranz, a German barbershop chorus and numerous church choirs. He particularly enjoyed singing the “Common Doxology” before meals, singing “God Bless America” at Rotary meetings, Christmas caroling with the Henderson sleigh bells, and entertaining his family on long road trips before the invasion of personal electronic devices. After a 40-year professional career in agricultural lending with Iowa and Colorado banks, T.L. and Cheryl retired to country living in Burnet, Texas, in 2014, where Tom loved tending to the property and working outdoors with cattle and his horse. Burnet was just close enough to families in Austin to enjoy abundant time together. Seldom seen without boots and a cowboy hat, T.L. was a Christian man who never met a stranger. Within a few minutes of meeting someone, he was engaged in conversation about agriculture, history or education. Because of this interest in people and service, community involvement was a mainstay in Tom’s life. As with all other communities in which he had lived, he quickly assimilated into life in Texas. He was a member of Rotary, the ROMEOS (Real Old Men Eating Out – a First Baptist Church men’s group), Burnet County Historical Commission, City of Burnet Historic Board and Burnet County Heritage Society. Burial will be in Lenox, Iowa, at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Hill Country Community Foundation, PO Box 848, Burnet, Texas 78611, on behalf of Burnet Rotary Scholarships. Tom loved God, his family, his Scottish heritage and animals—especially horses and dogs. He often told his sons to “Be productive citizens” and “Be as good as your dog thinks you are.” Condolences may be offered to www.clementswilcoxburnet.com. Dan is survived by his first wife, Joanne (Welt), and their four adult children: Terry Romero (Myrtle, Miss.), Larry Romero (Indianapolis, Ind.), Cheri (Romero) Fairrington (Blue River, Ore.), and Fairi (Romero) Wilson (Boron, Calif.). He is also survived by two adult children from his second marriage, whom he always loved as his own: John Stoltenberg (Sedalia, Mo.) and Kathleen (Stoltenberg) Agee (Oregon City, Ore.), as well as 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dan led a full and interesting life, with a quick and ready wit and a help-thy-neighbor attitude. He always told the greatest stories. From his younger days in California and New Mexico riding motorcycles and hanging out with the Hells Angels, being a Sonar man in the Navy, and his first “real” job in a tennis shoe factory…to meeting Farrah Faucett and Lee Majors at dinner one night on a business trip…Dan’s stories were marvelous and rich. In the 1980s, Dan lived in Columbus and traveled the world for business working for Valley Industries and Lindsay Manufacturing in sales of irrigation systems. He always brought back unique and interesting souvenirs with new tales behind them. When he wasn’t traveling Dan loved to fish, and was an avid and competitive golfer and bowler, playing tournaments and leagues. In the 1990s, Dan and Marti moved to Lewisburg, West Virginia, where Dan was an executive at ABB Process Analytics. He had great enthusiasm for and pride in his work, and worked his way up the ranks, closing out his work life as the CEO of a successful start-up business. Dan and Marti later retired to The Villages, Fla., where they drove golf carts to the grocery store, made loads of new friends, and played golf every day. Life was grand, until Marti was diagnosed with terminal cancer. They moved back to Nebraska to be close to family, and Marti passed in 2008. Dan remained in their little lake house that Marti so loved in North Bend until the recent floods made it uninhabitable. He was staying with family when he passed on June 15. Per Dan’s wishes, there will be no formal service, and the family will celebrate his life privately. Online condolences may be left at: www.mosermemorialchapels.com. Published July 3, 2019 Joe C.
