Paula Joan was born on Nov. 11, 1937, in Grand Island to Raymond and Pauline (Holtorf) Roehrkasse. She died Dec. 28, 2021, at her home in Holdrege. Paula graduated from Grand Island High School in 1955 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in music education. Paula received her master’s degree in music with an emphasis in musical theater and opera.
On Aug. 2, 1959 she married Ralph Eldon Knepper, who passed on Aug. 8, 2021. They lived in Hastings, moving to Holdrege in 1963.
Paula taught vocal music at Oxford, Minden and Holdrege, had a private voice studio in her home and directed multiple church and community choirs.
Paula is survived by two sisters, Claire (Michael G.) Eason of North Bend, Kathryn Trebelhorn of McAlester, Okla.; sisters-in-law Doneta Steinert of Lincoln, Berneta Steinert of Wauneta, Shirley (Jim) Pamp of Centennial, Colo., and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Janet L. Werner of Poplar Grove, Illinois, died Dec. 27, 2021, at Azura Memory Care in Clinton, Wisconsin. She was born June 19, 1942, to the late Edward and Lillian (Loukota) Abraham in Columbus and grew up on a farm near North Bend. Jan graduated from Schuyler High School, class of 1959. She earned her bachelors degree from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, class of 1964. Jan married Ronald R. Werner on Aug. 21, 1965 in Schuyler.
She was a high school English and drama teacher in Pender and Westside, Iowa. Jan was a volunteer at Manchester Grade School and served many years on North Boone Board of Education. She enjoyed reading, needle point, cross stitch and caring for her cats.
Janet is survived by her husband Ron Werner; her children Mike (Laura) Werner of Huntley, Illinois, Cheri (Bill) Wilson and Steve Werner both of Poplar Grove, Illinois, Kathy (Adam) Denker of Fremont, Nebraska; grandchildren Lindsay and Natalie Werner of Huntley, Jessalyn Wilson of Poplar Grove, Cal Wilson of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Trevor and Kate Denker of Fremont; her sister Joan Chesley of North Bend, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bob Abraham.

Helen M. Vyhlidal of Fremont passed away Dec. 26, 2021, at her home.
Helen was born Sept. 10, 1927, in Prague to Thomas and Bessie (Soukup) Vavak. Helen taught country school for several years prior to her marriage. She married Leonard Vyhlidal Sr. on Dec. 29, 1951, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Prague. They moved to Fremont before moving to North Bend in 1960. Helen and Leonard operated the Dairy Dream in North Bend until 1972. In 1976, they returned to Fremont and owned and operated Len’s Liquor Store until 1982.
Helen was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont, and VFW Post 8223 auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time crocheting and working on puzzle books.
Helen is survived by her son, Leonard Vyhlidal Jr. of Fremont, daughters Carol (Doug) Dale of Fremont and JoAnn (Francis) Zakovec of Morse Bluff, five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard Sr., two infant daughters and brothers, Tom, Ray, and Frank Vavak.
A private family funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Margaret Loretta Brenn was born Aug. 28, 1920, and departed this life Nov. 26, 2021.
She married Doyle Boyce on Jan. 17, 1942. This union was blessed with six children, including Marian (Bill) Young of Papillion, formerly of North Bend. Doyle died on May 27, 1969.M
In Oct. 1970 Margaret married Robert Stutz of Hebron, adding his four children to her family. He died in 1995.
Margaret loved to play cards, board games and quilt, making quilts for her 15 grandchildren including Jason (Melanie) Young of Kearney, Amy (Scott) Kinkaid of Omaha and Erin (Paul) Dudinski of Henderson, Nevada.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Dec. 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron with burial at Catholic Cemetery in Hebron.

Evelyn D. Winkelman passed away Nov. 24.
“Evie” was born March 30, 1926, in Ideal, North Dakota, to Albie (Dobry) and Tony Scheinost. Evie attended grade school in Ideal, and graduated from North Bend High School in 1943. Her father farmed in Osceola before moving to North Bend where he started the North Bend Locker Plant and Grocery Store. Evie worked with her father at the meat market for several years.
Evie married Gale Winkelman on Jan. 21, 1946, and they farmed east of North Bend for 44 years prior to Gale’s passing. While Gale farmed Evie worked in the Platte Valley Bank as a teller for 40 years and retired at the age of 80. She loved people and people loved her, making this position the perfect job for her.
Evie was a member of the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Club. Evie, with her sisters Eileen and Norma, were recognized in 2016 for being 70-year members of the Nebraska Order of The Eastern Star. She served as a Ruth Chapter 119 Order of the Eastern Star Worthy Matron in 1978.
Evie loved being outside whether it was mowing the yard, gardening, or sitting on the porch swing watching the farm equipment go in and out of the farm. Evie and Gale loved to bowl and play cards with friends. Evelyn was inducted into the North Bend Bowlers Hall of Fame in 2018.
Evie was preceded in death by her husband, Gale F. Winkelman, sisters Eileen Dahlheim and Norma Hamilton and brother Donald Scheinost.
She is survived by sons David (Claudia) Winkelman, Danny (Arlowene) Winkelman; daughter Deborah (Doug) Holtmeyer; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1 at the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. The Rev. Earl Underwood will officiate.
Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Richard Rothanzl of Columbus died Nov. 22 in Columbus.

Richard F. Rothanzl was born Jan. 25, 1947, in Omaha to Frank A. and Rose (Kahnen) Rothanzl. He grew up in Crescent, Iowa, Louisville and North Bend where he attended North Bend High School. Following high school, Richard entered the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey until 1968 when he transferred to the Reserves.
Richard married Donna J. French on Feb. 11, 1966, in Schuyler. Through the years, Richard worked for Western Homes, Legband Transfer, Glodowski Trucking, L&L Lumber and at Douglas and Lomason. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on cars and woodworking.
Richard is survived by daughter Kristin (Robert) Miller of Columbus, grandchildren Jordan Miller and Pazia (Josh) Ryba, great grandchild Stormi Ryba; son Kent (Lisa) Rothanzl of North Bend, grandchildren Caitlyn and Bailey Rothanzl; son Kyle (Teresa) Rothanzl of Blair, grandchildren Emilie, Evelyn, and Ryan Rothanzl; son Kurt (Javanah Bebee) Rothanzl of Wakefield; brothers James (Delores) Rothanzl of North Bend, Ed (Linda) Rothanzl of Omaha, John (Erma) Rothanzl of Alma Georgia.

Rita A. (Gaughen) Peters of North Bend passed away Saturday, Nov. 20 at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
Rita was born Feb. 13, 1939, to Harold and Mayme (Krause) Gaughen on the family farm at Clyde, northwest of North Bend. She grew up on the farm and graduated from North Bend High School in 1957.
Rita married H. William (Bill) Peters on Aug. 13, 1966, at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. Rita was employed by the Omaha Public Power District in North Bend.
She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church. Rita was an outdoor person, avid football fan and enjoyed spending time at their cabin on the Platte River. She also had a great love for St. Bernard dogs.
Survivors include her husband Bill, daughter Sarah Peters (fiancé Lawayne Svehla) of Elwood, grandchildren Sean and Hannah Kassmeier, sister-in-law Maxine (Vern) Bray of Fremont, special friend Susan Emanuel of Lincoln and many nieces and nephews.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, sister Joan Emanuel and brother-in-law Dennis Emanuel.
Her funeral Mass is at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m., all at Moser’s in North Bend. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Sharon Kay Virka of Morse Bluff passed away Nov. 18 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont.
Sharon was born on July 4, 1942, to Melvin and Berdine (Molle) Tank in North Bend. She graduated from North Bend High School in the class of 1960. On Feb. 7, 1961, Sharon married Vernon Virka at Faith Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Sharon spent much of her time caring for her grandchildren and loved gardening and tending to her flowers.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Vern; sons Randy E. Virka and Michael (Christine) Virka; brother Gary (Judy) Tank; grandchildren Michael (Madison) Virka, Nicholas (Kylee) Virka and Ian Virka; and great grandchild Emery Jayne.
A memorial service was held Nov. 22 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. The Rev. Charles Starks officiated. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Andrea Ann Neill of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, formerly of Fremont, passed away Nov. 3, at Norman Regional Healthplex. She was born May 10, 1995, in Fremont to Lynn and Holly (Legler) Barker. She grew up in Fremont and was a 2013 graduate of Fremont Senior High School. Andrea married Austen Neill on May 19, 2015 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Andrea was a loving, goofy, free-spirited person who loved adventures and animals. She had an unbreakable bond with her two fur-babies Colt and Babe. Although she never admitted it, we all knew Colt was her favorite.
Andrea started working as a front desk receptionist at Wise Eye Associates in Norman. She took on an interest in the medical field in general and planned on taking a medical coding course through Oklahoma State University after Carter was born.
Andrea had a love for music and dancing. She was introduced to two stepping and line dancing by a group of great friends in Oklahoma. Cowboys Oklahoma City was a typical weekend hang out. She was
an amazing Navy wife and knew how to take care of people. She will be greatly missed by many.
Andrea is survived by her husband Austen and son Carter Joseph of Oklahoma City; mother Holly (James) Colburn of Doniphan; father Lynn (Mayra) Barker of Fremont; mother-in-law, Michelle (Brandon) Ray of Fremont, father-in-law Terry (Amy) Neill of Osceola, Iowa; grandmother Karan Legler of Morse Bluff; grandparents Dan (Dee) Dieckmann; Jim (Yolanda) Neill all of Fremont; twin-sister Jena (James) Sommers of Fremont; sisters-in-law Ashtynn Neill of Fremont, Alicia (Chris) Hoffman, Kansas City, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by grandparents, Leonard Legler and Ray and Carol Barker.

David was born on the Vojtech family farm southwest of Morse Bluff to Jim and Alice (Jambor) Vojtech. He was raised and grew up on his parents’ farmstead northeast of North Bend.
Dave was a 1947 graduate of North Bend High and in 1948 finished studies at Electronic Radio Television Institute in Omaha. He worked for Western Electric for 34 years.
On June 25, 1949, he married Marian Peterson of North Bend. She died in 2001 after a nine-year battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia; Dave took care of her at home. All his life, he enjoyed playing his trumpet and singing especially the “old tunes,” golfing, hunting and fishing.
Dave died Nov. 1. He is survived by sons Kenneth (Pam), Robert (Colleen) and Jeffrey (Patricia), eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, seven step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, a sister Janice (John) Hobza of Ralston and many nieces and
nephews. Preceding Dave in death are his wife, parents, brother Leon and sister Carol.
Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 19, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at the
West Center Chapel of Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler in Omaha. Mass of Christian

Duane C. Ellermeier of North Bend passed away Oct. 28 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
He was born March 16, 1944, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Carl and Arlene (Steiner) Ellermeier. He grew up in Trenton and Wayne, graduating from Wayne Prep High School in 1962. Duane received his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State College and a master’s degree from Texas A&M University.
Duane married Karma (Borchers) Sept. 2, 1967, in Bennington. They lived in Columbus where Duane taught school and Lincoln, Schuyler and Bennington where he started his banking career. Duane moved to Elgin where he had his own bank. In 2005 when he retired and they moved to North Bend.
Duane was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont, Nebraska Bankers Association and was very active in the communities he lived in.
He is survived by his wife Karma of North Bend, daughters Karrie (Chris) Hanke of Omaha and Nicole Ellermeier of Lincoln, sisters Phyllis Ellermeier, Carolyn (David) McMingo and sister-in-law Yetta Levine-Ellermeier, all of Seattle, Washington.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents and brother Dennis Ellermeier.
His funeral was Nov. 1 at First Lutheran Church in Fremont with Rev. Ernesto Medina officiating. Interment was at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Mary “Kay” (Bolte) Helgenberger Snyder passed away in Omaha on Oct 30. She was born Aug. 18, 1935, in Dodge. Kay graduated from North Bend High School in 1953. She received her nursing degree from St Catherine’s in Omaha in 1956. Kay then received her bachelor’s degree from Midland College in Fremont in 1989.
Throughout her career she worked in hospitals, nursing homes, as the school nurse at NBC and later was Wellness Coordinator at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Kay married Hugh Helgenberger in 1956 and they were married for 29 years before Hugh passed away in 1985. In 1995 she married Lee Snyder. They were married for 25 years before Lee’s death in 2020.
Kay was very active in her communities. She loved being involved with Project Pink’d, PEO, The Assistance League and St. Vincent de Paul Church in Omaha, along with various clubs.
Kay’s pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She made it a point to attend all of their activities.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Thelma Bolte; brothers Francis, John and Bob Bolte and husbands Hugh Helgenberger and Lee Snyder.
She is survived by sister-in-law Sue (Wayne) Gilson of Schuyler; daughters Ann Helgenberger of St Paul, Minn., Marg Helgenberger (Charlie Haugk) of Los Angeles, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law Curt and Julie Helgenberger of Beatrice; step-son Marc Snyder of Omaha; grandchildren Laura (Derek) Koenig, Amanda Love, Kelsy (Bill) Mulligan, Jordan Helgenberger, Hugh (Mikki) Rosenberg, Max Snyder, Genevieve Paule and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Roeder Mortuary, 2727 N. 108th St. Omaha.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 14330 Eagle Run Drive, Omaha.

Robert L. Chromy of Fremont passed away, Sunday, Oct. 10 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont. He was born April 19, 1950, in Wahoo to Stephen and Dorothy (Prchal) Chromy.
Robert grew up in the Morse Bluff and North Bend areas. He married Sandra Parr on Dec. 27, 1969, at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. Robert served in the National Guard. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in June of 2010. He moved to Fremont in 1998.
Robert was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way and enjoyed fishing, hunting, bingo and keno.
Robert is survived by his wife Sandra; daughters Tammy (Mike) Zvacek of North Bend, April (Rick) Robertson of Hooper; brothers Steve (Audrey) Chromy of North Bend, Ed (Becky) Chromy of Fremont, Donald Chromy of Morse Bluff; sisters Kathy (Dan) Bauer of Morse Bluff, Jeanne (Mike) Quinn of Columbus; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, son Robert Chromy Jr., daughter Tonya Chromy; brother Thomas Chromy, sister-in-law Doris Chromy and nephew Nicholas Bauer.

Jerome L. “Jerry” Halladay, died Sept. 30 at Methodist Fremont Health after battling complications due to colon cancer.
Jerome was born to Richard and Ruth (Seyersdahl) Halladay on Aug. 7, 1946, in Norfolk. He grew up and lived most of his life in the North Bend and Fremont areas.
Jerry was a 1965 graduate of Fremont High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, serving from 1965 to 1969. He was stationed for a time in Iceland and was a survivor of an extensive fire while aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Forrestal.
Upon his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Nebraska to work with his father at his gas station in North Bend. He attended the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis, earning a degree in horticulture.
Jerry married Carol Harter in 1973. Three sons were born to this union. The couple later divorced. He married Ellen Ann (Proctor) Phelps on Feb. 9, 1991, and the couple raised their children together. In addition, they became caregivers for individuals with developmental disabilities. Three of these individuals lived with the Halladays for 20 years or more and were considered part of the family.
Jerry was the owner/operator of Halladay Greenhouses in Fairbury and Country Greenhouses in North Bend. He also worked for a time as a groundskeeper at Midland University. He was a beloved bus driver for North Bend Central Public Schools for many years. He volunteered for many community organizations in North Bend and the surrounding area. He was North Bend’s VFW commander for a number of years and also served as District 7 state commander, earning multiple awards at the state and national level.
Jerry was a devoted leader for the Boy Scout program, holding many leadership roles in the local troop and in the area. He served for five years as a national Cub Scout Day Camp Director. He was proud of the many young men he helped and inspired to achieve Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. Three of his own sons earned the rank of Eagle.
Jerry is survived by his wife Ann; his sons Jamie (Andrea) Halladay, Kelly (Michelle) Halladay, Jesse (Jamie) Halladay, and Jeffrey (Maggie) Phelps; daughters Angela (Todd) Martin and Renae Kirschenmann. Also surviving are “foster” sons, Joshua McIntosh and William Donte Hairston; brother Johnny Halladay; and sisters Elsie (Russell) Hank and Mary Sue (Ron) Cummings; 16 grandchildren: Adrianna, Alaina and Ava Halladay, Dominic Martin, Mason and Kinsey Halladay, Sidney, James, Maya and Zoe Kirschenmann, Grace, LeRoy and Mary Halladay, Abraham, Marlon and Frances Phelps and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Louise, sister-in-law Carol Halladay, granddaughter Alison Martin and “foster” son Chad Gundersen.
A Celebration of Life will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021 at United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. Rev. Scott Jensen will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. also at the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Burial with military honors will be at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Thomas Eugene Hruza was born Dec. 17, 1930, to Alois and Marie Hruza in Grand Island. Tom was the second of four children. He graduated from high school in St. Paul in 1948, and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1952. Tom served in the Korean War as a lieutenant.
Tom married Joan Hines Aug. 9, 1956, and lived in Morse Bluff, where they raised three children: Suzie, David and Cindy. Tom worked for Allied Chemical Corporation until the late ‘60s when he began farming full time. He served on the board of directors of Northeast Nebraska Telephone Company for many years, and was involved in several other businesses.
At the encouragement of their son David, who died in 1986, Tom and Joan moved to Lincoln in retirement. They enjoyed restoring their historic home and were involved in many organizations. They traveled widely, including many wonderful trips with their children and grandchildren. Tom could find a connection with people anywhere in the world. Tom died peacefully at home on Sept. 30.
Tom was preceded in death by son David Hruza, parents Alois and Marie Hruza, brother and sister-in-law Don and Nita Hruza, brother Jerry Hruza and sister Noelle Hruza.
He is survived by his wife Joan; daughters Suzanne Hruza (Ted Granger) and Cynthia Hruza; grandchildren Elizabeth Granger (Max Fletcher), Thomas Granger (Cristina Granger),David Granger (Jeanna Granger), Emily Hruza (Rudy Villegas); and great-grandchildren Peter Alois Fletcher, Hazel Grace Granger, and Ellie Jane Granger.

Robin Rae Evans of North Bend was born June 21, 1962, in Kansas to Henry and Cora (Daniels - McKinnis) Espinoza. She died Sept. 29. Robin grew up in Dodge City, Kansas, and later moved to Garden City, Kansas.
Robin married Chris D. Evans on Oct. 31, 1980, in Garden City. In 1987 they moved to Norfolk and to North Bend in 1998.
She is survived by husband Chris; sons Alexander Evans, North Bend, and Rick Evans, Fremont; daughter Ambrosha (Kevin) Vhylidal, Morse Bluff; sisters Marsha Sullivan, Fremont, Rhonda Espinoza, Hutchinson, Kansas, Helen Mesa and Alice Gullian, Garden City, Kansas; and three grandchildren.
Memorial service was Oct. 5 at Moser Memorial Chapel, North Bend.

James “Jim” E. Bauer, of Wahoo, formerly of Prague, died Sept. 23, at the South Haven Living Center in Wahoo. He was born Dec. 1, 1925, in rural Morse Bluff to James and Anna (Janecek) Bauer. Jim graduated from North Bend High School in 1941. He was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a very proud veteran and always a proud American.
Jim married Lorraine Petrzelka at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church June 28, 1949. He was an active member of St. John’s, Knights of Columbus Council 1833, American Legion 254 and a 4-H leader for many years.
Jim farmed until he and Lorraine opened Bauer’s Cafe on Highway 92 by Weston. Many remember their excellent food. He loved his Czech heritage and spoke the language all his life. He spent his retirement years in Prague.
Jim is survived by his children, Connie (Bruce) Jones of Delaware; Kathy Wolf of Pennsylvania; Cindy (Bob) Poehling of Lincoln; Russ (Lori) Bauer of Omaha; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as local nephews Dan and Jeff Bauer of Morse Bluff and many relatives in the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Anna Bauer, wife Lorraine Bauer, son-in-law Robert Wolf, siblings Marietta Humlicek, Joseph D. Bauer and Leona Bauer.

Laverne Schmale, of Schuyler, died Sept. 8, at Nye Point in Fremont.
Laverne was born March 31, 1932, in North Bend to Louis and Josephine (Bobek) Semrad. On Oct. 16, 1954, she married Amiel Schmale at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Schuyler. They lived and raised their family in Schuyler. Laverne went to Platte Junior College in Columbus and became a Licensed Practical Nurse.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was proud of her service as a Sunday School teacher and member of the Altar Committee.
Laverne is survived by her daughter, JoEllen Day of Fremont; two sons Leigh (Julie) Schmale of Murdock and Lynn (Kristine) Schmale of Carmel, Indiana; grandchildren Brooke
Day and Dylan (Chelsey) Kaup, Tyler Schmale and Megan (Alan) Barnes, Trenton (Emily)
Schmale, Ethan Schmale and Layton Schmale; great-grandchildren Blake Kaup, Logan Barnes and Max and Bea Schmale; sister Loretta Kruse of Olympia, Washington, sister-in-law, Carol Lewis of Fremont and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Amiel in 1995 and sister Laramie Meisner.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Schuyler, with Rev. Day Hefner officiating. Visitation will be prior to service from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. Committal is at Schuyler Cemetery. Lunch will be following committal in the church hall.

Leona A. Soukup of North Bend died Aug. 24 at her home.
Leona was born Nov. 28, 1936, on a farm near Morse Bluff to George and Lydia (Kriz) Karpisek. She graduated from North Bend High School in 1954.
Leona taught school for three years, worked at J.C. Penney’s and did daycare for 50-plus years. She also helped her husband with the Toy Museum in North Bend. Leona enjoyed gardening, flowers and car shows. She lived in Fremont from 1965 until moving to North Bend in 1995.
Leona married F. Harold Soukup Jr. on Dec. 31, 1954, in Yankton, South Dakota. Harold died Jan. 11, 2011.
Leona is survived by sons Greg (Diane) Soukup of Hooper, Bruce (Kathy) Soukup of Strang, and Ken (Heidi) Soukup of Orlando, Florida; daughters Debra Pedan of Portland, Oregon, and Teri (Jim) McCabe of Manson, Iowa; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Sheri Gocken, brother George Karpisek and sisters Dorothy Lastovica and Margie Larsen.
Her funeral service was Aug. 31, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Burial was at Fremont Memorial Cemetery.

Robert “Bob” Lee Kerwin of Morse Bluff passed away Aug. 26 at Methodist Fremont Health.
Bob was born Sept. 29, 1932, in Ames to Lawrence and Clara Bell (Adams) Kerwin. He graduated from Fremont High School. After school, Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1955 during the Korean War. He married Carol Kimble in Fremont on July 6, 1956. They later divorced.
Bob was a mechanic for Pollard Implement and Vopalensky’s in North Bend. He resided in Cedar Bluffs from 1967 to 2005. He moved to Prague until 2015 before moving to Morse Bluff.
Bob is survived by his children, Diana Kerwin-Kubr, (Rod) Kerwin of Wahoo, Kevin (Jaclyn) Kerwin of Columbus, Becky Kerwin (Jason Lillie) of Cedar Bluffs, Cindy (Scott) Kranz of Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren Robert (Mindy) Kerwin, Kelsey (Jerimy) McDonald, Kaelyn (Ben) Schroeder, Cortland Kerwin (Trenton Haltrom), Jesse (Corina) Crist, Jaime Crist (Michael Towne), Alexandria Kranz, Sara (Chase) Ross; great-grandchildren Ashton and Addison, James, Emma, Jemma, Kora, Kiefer and Audie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Don and Lawrence; sisters Marilyn Finnel, Kay Bolte, Natalie Garner and Shirley Oschner; and grandson Jeremy Crist.
A celebration of life service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 3, at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Family will be receiving friends will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Military honors will be follow the service at the funeral home on Friday.
Burial will be at Omaha National Cemetery in Omaha, at a later date.

Michael D. Caradine of Ames, formerly of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Aug.15, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
He was born on Oct. 16, 1955, to Robert and Colleen (Riedy) Caradine, in Miami, Florida. Mike grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, where he attended Christian Brothers High School and Memphis State University. He spent the majority of his life in Wichita, where he worked in retail clothing sales and management. Mike married Kristin Eveland, on July 21, 1979.
Mike enjoyed traveling, music, meeting new people, his beloved dogs and his family. He was known for his generous heart, giving personality and sense of style and fashion.
Mike was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Albert Pike Masonic Lodge, Midian Shrine and Scottish Rite, all in Wichita.
Preceded in death by his parents, sister Michelle Belski, father and mother-in-law Paul and Kay Eveland, brother-in-law Al Eveland.
Michael is survived by his wife Kristin, daughters Danielle Caradine, Brittany Adams, sisters Pam (Randy) Thomason, Nancy Caradine, brother Robert Caradine, Jr., brothers-in-law Bruce Eveland, Scott Eveland, niece Alysa Eveland, nephews Jeff (Andrea) Eveland, Kendall (Dana Johnson) Eveland, beloved dogs Bailey and Gracie.

Virginia “Ginger” June Livingston died July 28 at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont. She was born June 21, 1936, to William and Martha (Westra) Johnson of Yankton, South Dakota.
Ginger graduated from Yankton High School in 1954. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Southern State Teachers College, Springfield, South Dakota. She completed her post graduate studies at University of South Dakota, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and University of Nebraska at Kearney. Ginger taught for a total of 35 years, 20 of those at North Bend Elementary School.
In 1958, Ginger and Lester Livingston were united in marriage. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary Dec. 6, 2019. They were parents to Julie Renae. Ginger’s greatest joy were here two grandsons, Ryan and Eric.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Julie and Don Tvrdy; grandsons Ryan and Eric Tvrdy; sister-in-law Roberta Johnson; Ray and Mary Lou Livingston and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Les, and many family members.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Friday, August 6, at Good Shephard Lutheran Church in Fremont. Memorial visitation with family receiving friends will be from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Thursday, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Burial will be at Omaha National Cemetery in Omaha.

Joseph M. Holeman of Ames passed away July 26 at his home. He was born Feb. 16, 1954, in Madisonville, Kentucky, to Albert Sr. and Mary (Vanhouser) Holeman.
At the age of 12 he was baptized in the Tradewater River in Caldwell County, Ky. He graduated from Caldwell County High School in 1972. He served in the U.S. Air Force from June 29, 1972, to Feb. 15, 1974, during Vietnam. Joe served in the Army National Guard for two years. He moved to Nebraska in 1977.
Joe married Patricia Severson in 1982 in Paris, Tenn.
He worked at R.E. Reutzel Gas Pipeline Company for over 10 years and Bowman Manufacturing for over 20 years.
Joe is survived by his wife Patricia Holeman of Ames; sisters-in-law Anna Holeman of Dawson Spring, Ky., Barb (Jim) Anson of Bellwood, Judy (Don) Slosser and Donna Severson all of North Bend; nieces and nephews Lee Ann Oden, Mary Beth Young, Kim Deats, Cindy Slosser, Chris Loeffler, Chrystal Beltz, Jared Severson, Adam Severson, and his faithful dog Tucker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Albert Holeman Jr.; mother and father-in-law Dorothy and Robert Severson and nephew Michael Severson.
The funeral will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 29 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Moser’s. Burial with military honors will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Jill K. Watson of Fremont died peacefully among loved ones on July 21 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont.  
Jill was born May 25, 1969, in Fremont to Richard and Marilyn (Smeal) Nott.  She was raised in Cedar Bluffs and North Bend, graduating from North Bend Central High School in 1987. She attended University of Nebraska-Lincoln before marrying Brian Watson in September 1989. After their marriage they lived in Lincoln and Chadron before moving to Fremont. While living in Fremont Jill worked for Bergan schools, Fremont Area Medical Center (now Methodist Fremont Health) and for Twin J Enterprises, Inc. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont.
Jill was extremely competitive in cards and board games. Cooking, baking, crafting and photography were all passions of hers. Supportive in all of her children’s sports and activities, she loved documenting these events with her camera. She would even take pictures of other children and share them with those parents that could not attend.
Jill is survived by her husband Brian, daughter Rachel Watson, sons Kyle Watson, all of Fremont, Luke Watson of Omaha, Erik (Samantha) Watson, parents Richard and Marilyn Nott, all of Fremont; sister Kelle (K.C.) Carnes of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brothers Troy (Christin) Nott of Cedar Bluffs, Todd (Angee) Nott of Plattsmouth; mother-in-law Marilyn Watson of Lincoln; brothers-in-law Mark (Andrea) Watson of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Tom (Stephanie) Watson of Austin, Texas; aunt Joan (Dave) Stevens of Bemidji, Minn.; uncle Gene (Marian) Nott of Fremont, aunt Alice Nott of Fremont; as well as many cousins, plus other family and friends. 
Jill was preceded in death by her father-in-law Richard Watson and uncle Gary Nott.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 29 at First Lutheran Church in Fremont. Rev. Ernesto Medina, Deacon Rick Strong and Rev. Scott Jensen will officiate. Thomas Edward Chapman of North Bend was born on Feb. 19, 1940, in Dodge to Luke and Mabel (Foy) Chapman and died July 15, 2021. Tom attended North Bend rural grade schools, St. Patrick High School in Fremont and graduated from North Bend High School in 1958.
Following high school Tom worked for the Dodge County ASCS office for two years and then the U.S. Department of Agriculture for seven years.
On July 16, 1966, Tom married Patricia Draper at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, where they have been members of the parish their entire lives.
Tom farmed and milked registered Guernsey cows most of his life. In 1995 he went to work for Smeal Fire Apparatus, where he stayed until his retirement in 2011.
Tom was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3736 of North Bend and the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree council 2071 of Fremont. He was a 4-H leader for several years, helping to share his love for dairy cattle and agriculture. Tom was a member of the Nebraska Guernsey Breeders Association and Nebraska Dairy Association. He also judged many youth dairy shows throughout the state.
Tom enjoyed playing in the local men’s fastpitch softball league.
He was preceded in death by his parents Luke and Mabel, brothers, James Chapman and infant Gerald, sister Mary Catherine Ulrich of West Point/Lincoln, parents-in-law James R. and Lois Draper, sister-in-law Judy Chapman, brother-in-law Melvern Ulrich and infant granddaughter Josie Rae Chapman.
Tom is survived by his wife Patricia of 55 years, six children, 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren including: Terry (Janel) Chapman of North Bend, Wyatt (Jade), and Josephine Chapman, Cassidy (Bret) Yeggy, and Dakota (Conner) Buss; Kris (Steward) Spath of Eagle, Alexis (Trae) and Ava Ramer and Trevor Spath; Doug (Kathy) Chapman of St Joseph, Mo., Makenzie Helsel (Josh) Wagner, Madison Helsel and Gabby Chapman; Bill (Kelly) Chapman of Denton, Lauren, Jack and Molly Chapman; Kelly (Scott) Neal of Lincoln, Shelby (Ryan), Remi and Ruby Schelbitzki, Riley (Erin) Neal, Megan, Thomas, Sean, James and Martin Neal; Tom (Tiffany) Chapman of Bancroft, Samantha, Xander and Melody Chapman. Tom is also survived by many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
His funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 21, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. Visitation is Tuesday, July 20, from 4-7 p.m. and a Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. also at the church.
Burial at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend will follow the Mass.

Stanley James Shavlik entered the world Nov. 3, 1929, on the Shavlik Ranch near Newboro in Wheeler County. Assisting were Dr. Briggs and nurse Tulley. His parents were Alois (Louis) Shavlik and Ludmila (Millie) Blatny Shavlik.
In 1931, Louis and Millie moved their family – Milo, Rose, and Stan – back to the Linwood area. A Sears kit home was built on the Shavlik Farm in NW Saunders County.
Stan attended rural school District 86 through eighth grade and high school in Linwood. With no professor available for Stan’s 12th grade, he stayed home to help with farming. Returning to high school the following year, his senior class included Jean Dvorak and Clarence Thege. They graduated in 1948.
Stan and Jean were married on Nov. 7, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Linwood. On the Shavlik Farm, they built a small cabin-style house, adding to it as their family expanded. Eventually, Stan and Jean switched houses with Louis and Millie.
Stan farmed row crops, had cattle and hogs, sold scrap iron and fixed radios and television sets. With his journeyman electrician license, he was able to get “wiring” jobs.
In the 1970s, Stan helped organize the Saunders County Pork Producers, serving as president the first two years. He was quite involved with the Farmers Coop and grain elevator in Linwood, serving as president and training several managers.
With three children attending District 86, Stan was on the school board. A lot of time was spent with his children, whether in day-to-day farm life, or attending school events.
Stan farrowed hogs, and later began finishing feeder pigs. His small herd of cattle would calve in the spring. It was a favorite time, helping to welcome each new life into the world.
After reading about the scarcity of the Eastern Bluebird, Stan learned to build nest boxes for them. He enjoyed monitoring the ‘trail’ and photographing the bluebirds, eventually fledging over 2,000 chicks. Stan kept water out for the wild birds and put up nectar feeders for the hummingbirds. Woodpeckers loved the suet blocks, and orioles enjoyed orange halves and grape jelly. Time was spent photographing area wildlife – especially bald eagles.
Another cherished hobby was fixing clocks or creating cordless clocks in one-of-a-kind imaginative styles.
The physical life of a farmer resulted in Stan having knee surgeries, spinal surgeries, hip replacement and other minor surgeries over the years. Stan relied upon Jean and appreciated all her help. They were a wonderful ‘Team’ for 67 years and 9 months.
During his lifetime, Stan belonged to Catholic Parishes of St. Mary’s in Linwood, Sts. Peter and Paul in Abie, St Anthony’s in Bruno, and St. George in Morse Bluff. Faith and fellowship have been the cornerstone of his foundation.
Stan departed this world on July 4 in Fremont. He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant brother, his beloved wife Jean, brother-in-law George Vanis and sister-in-law Phyllis Shavlik.
Stan is survived by his children: Laura (Henry) Rahlfs of North Bend, Paul (Lucy) Shavlik of Fremont and Nancy (Jack) Soukup of Davey; five grandchildren, Henry Rahlfs Jr., Mick Rahlfs, Bill Rahlfs, Connie Hartung and Renae Lockhart; eight great-grandchildren, Michael and Brittany Rahlfs, Branden Claussen, Lane and Ciera Hartung, Melany, Samantha and Peyton Lockhart; brother Milo Shavlik of North Platte; sister Rose Vanis of David City; cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 8, at St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend and continue one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday. Rosary will be said 7 p.m., Wednesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Linwood.

Mary Jane Roemer of Scribner passed away May 25 at home. She was born Oct. 30, 1960, in West Point to LeRoy and Norma (Madsen) Roemer.
Mary Jane was raised on a farm west of Uehling. She graduated from Logan View High School and Wayne State College. After college she moved to Omaha to work. Mary Jane married Dan Dolezal in 1989 and they later divorced. She then moved to her grandparents’ farm outside of Scribner near St. John’s Ridgeley. Mary has always been a hard worker giving her all at every job she has had, most recently at Brehmer Manufacturing in Lyons. 
Mary was a loving mother who adored her kids and grandkids. She was a fighter who fought cancer twice and fought to the end. 
Mary Jane was a member of St. John Ridgeley Lutheran Church.
She is survived by daughters
Melissa (Derrick) Weyand of Valdosta, Ga.; Aubrey (Scott) Miller of Fremont; son Colby (Megan) Dolezal of Scribner;
grandchildren Maximos, Isabella, Madelyn, Raegan, Nolan and Boone; and brother Mark Roemer of Scribner. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents.

Doris A. Krepel of North Bend passed away May 20 at her home.
Doris was born Feb. 27, 1934, in Carroll to Eggert and Anna (Bock) Lage. She resided in North Bend and married “Irish” Krepel at the North Bend Methodist Church on June 4, 1956.
Doris was a member of the Fremont Presbyterian Church and North Bend VFW Auxiliary. She spent 45 years babysitting North Bend children and her grandchildren.
Doris was an avid sports fan, particularly of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and Nebraska Cornhuskers. Her hobbies included sewing and quilting.
Doris is survived by her loving husband, Irish of North Bend; daughter, JoLynn (Robert Jr.) Hartman of North Bend; sisters Laverne Schiender of Colton, Calif., Janet Topp of Winside; three grandchildren Beau Hartman, Tony (Natalie) Hartman, McKenzie (Jon) Greve; two great- grandchildren with one more on the way, Braxton Hartman and Cru Greve; brothers-in-law Vern (Kathy) Krepel of North Bend and Joe (Marge) Krepel of Schuyler.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; three infant sons and one infant daughter; brother Willis Lage; brothers-in-law Doug Schiender, Merlin Topp, Donnie Krepel and Duane Krepel.
The funeral was May 24 at the North Bend Presbyterian Church with Chaplain Scott Jensen officiating. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Mercedes “Dee” R. Roth of Fremont passed away May 20 at the Hooper Care Center. She was born on July 11, 1939, in Dodge to Edward and Hilda (Studt) Moser.
Mercedes grew up in North Bend and graduated North Bend High School in 1957. She married Richard Hartmann on May 10, 1958, in North Bend. They lived in Omaha until the family’s accident in 1970. Dee returned to Fremont. She married Melvin “Mel” Roth on Sept. 28, 1973, in Fremont and they have resided in Fremont ever since.
Mercedes was a member of St Patrick Catholic Church. Her family was her joy. She loved taking care of all of them.
She is survived by her daughters Donna (Dick) Brandenburgh of Fremont, Sherri (Joe) Recker of Lincoln; husband Melvin Roth of Fremont; five step-children; brothers Robert (Caryn) Moser of North Bend, James (Lynda) Moser of Fremont, Richard (Donna) Moser of Sacramento, Calif, Eldon (Cheryl) Moser of Yutan; sisters Ardith (Richard) Cantral of Kearney, Marjorie Reynolds of Fremont; grandchildren Christina, Melissa, Jennifer, Zach and Luke; and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard Hartmann; son Steve Hartmann; brother Ed Moser; sisters May Rita Jirkovsky, Kathy Powers, and infant sister Elizabeth Moser.
Her funeral service was May 25 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery at North Bend.

Addie Lyn Colgan was born May 4, 1949, in Maryville, Mo., to Hubert Earl Maharg and Lois Frances Barrett. Addie grew up in Colorado Springs, Colo. She attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Denver. While in nursing school she joined the Navy Enlisted Officer Training Program and on completion of her nursing program, she was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy Nurse Corps. She was stationed at naval medical centers in Bethesda, Md. and Portsmouth, Va. Her specialty was operating room nursing. She completed two tours of duty between May 1971 and January 1978, being released as a lieutenant.
She met her husband, Thomas E. Colgan, at Bethesda in October 1971 and they were married at the Navy chapel in Washington, D.C., on July 15, 1972. Following her release from active duty, Addie became a full-time mom and pursued her professional career by attending college at the University of La Verne and obtaining a bachelor of science degree in health care management. While the family was overseas in Naples, Italy, she earned a master of science degree in management from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama.
Addie is survived by her husband Tom; children Jason Todd (Suzan) and Amy Rebecca (Daniel) Kuhlman; grandchildren Everett and Gabriella; and sister Lee (Gary) Mertz of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Addie worked in healthcare for over 40 years, retiring from Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton after 20 years of civil service as the risk manager of the hospital.
Addie was well known for her integrity, commitment and respect. She genuinely enjoyed working with young girls in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and was the Mother Advisor of Golden Star Assembly in Vista for six years. A talented seamstress, making formals was one of her passions, and the dresses she made with a sewing machine were awesome. She enjoyed playing cards and being with her grandchildren. But her greatest pastime was watching the Broncos play football, a true diehard fan.
Addie died May 18 in Oceanside, Calif. A private Interment is planned at the Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, Calif.

Ronald R. Fittje passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on May 6 at Parkview Home in Dodge.  Ron was born on May 24, 1943, in Columbus to Rudolph and Irene (Gehring) Fittje. 
  At a young age, he moved with his family to Omaha.  He graduated from Omaha North High School and Midland Lutheran College. Ron served in the U.S. Army from May 1962 to June 1965. He devoted 31 years to teaching and coaching at North Bend and Clarkson Schools.  
  Ron married Patsy Vanderkolk on March 1, 1969, in Octavia. To this union were born three children, Ryan, Russ and Robyn.   
  Ron was an avid fast pitch softball pitcher for 42 years. He was inducted into the Nebraska State Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in December 2019 in Hastings. Ron was also an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids athletic events and other activities. 
  Ron was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of North Bend, a former Sunday school teacher and usher.  
  He is survived by his wife Patsy; sons Ryan (Johanna) Fittje of Fremont; Russ (Sonya) Fittje of Papillion; daughter Robyn (Josh) Klingman of Grand Island; brother-in-law Rich Majerus of Elkhorn; sisters-in-law Sheryl (Mike) Block of Hallam; Beverly Vanderkolk of Austin, Tex; four grandchildren: James, Drew, RJ, and Kyla; many nieces, nephews and cousins.  
  Ron was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother; sister Linda Pugh Majerus; and brother-in-law Jim Vanderkolk. 
  Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 14, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend. Military Honors will follow the service. A private family interment will be at Zion Lutheran (Grand Prairie)
Cemetery in Platte Center.

John A. Wennekamp of North Bend passed away May 6 at Methodist Fremont Health. He was born August 16, 1936, in Monroe to Emil and Viola (Parker) Wennekamp.
John grew up in Craig and graduated from Craig High School. He lived in Loveland, Colo., where he graduated from Electronic Technical Institute of Denver. He was employed by Freuhoff of Omaha, Magnus Metal, North Bend Popcorn Plant and in 2000 retired from the Industrial Maintenance Department of Leprino Foods in Dodge. For years he raised top-quality hogs and operated his sharpening business. John was proud to have served in the US Army where he had advanced training with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was on the first drill team in the history of Ft. Ord to receive all possible points while passing in review. He received the second highest score in proficiency in the history of Ft. Carson.
John married Bonnie Allgayer on Sept. 5, 1959, at the Congregational Church in Avoca.
John is a member of Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church near Ames. He was on the board of directors at Good Shepherd Lutheran Community at Blair and is life member of AmVets Post 20 of North Bend and served as Post chaplain.
John was past president of Cotterell School District 93, a former Sunday school teacher and church council member at St. John’s Ridgeley Lutheran Church, past president of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, North Bend (Pleasant Valley) and past president of Buffs Trinity Lutheran Church at Ames. He enjoyed nature, especially sunsets and eagles.
John is survived by his wife Bonnie; sons Mike (Patty) Wennekamp North Bend, David (Kristen) Wennekamp of Merrimac, Mass.; two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Wennekamp and sister Marcell Wennekamp.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 12 at Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church north of Ames. Rev. Sean Tyler will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 11, 5-7 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Burial with military honors will be at St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery north of North Bend.

David R. Nesladek of Morse Bluff passed away April 29 at Kinship Pointe Assisted Living in Seward.
David was born on April 5, 1946, to Adolph and Anna (Pabian) Nesladek in North Bend. David was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Cedar Hill Catholic Church near Morse Bluff, where he attended church and grade school at rural District 77. He attended North Bend High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served from Nov. 27, 1967, to Nov. 25, 1970, during Vietnam.
David resided near Morse Bluff where he farmed the family farm during his lifetime. After retiring from farming, he moved to North Bend.
David enjoyed collecting toy farm equipment and reading farmer’s magazines. He also enjoyed the visits of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
David was a member of the American Legion Post 340 in Morse Bluff, VFW Post 8223 and Knights of Columbus at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, both in North Bend.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Phillip.
He is survived by sister Phyllis (L.J.) Meinberg of Seward; brother James (Millie) Nesladek of Polson, Mont.
A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 5, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. The Rev. Keith Rezac will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend, with a Rosary at 7 p.m.
Burial with military honors will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery near Morse Bluff.

We are sad to announce that on April 23 we had to say goodbye to Jean Kovarik in Simi Valley, Calif. She was a 1952 Schuyler High School graduate.
She was predeceased by her parents Hatten Peters and Delsie Peters, husband Dudley Kovarik and brother James Peters.
Jean is survived by daughters Carol (Rick) Short of Omaha, Kaye (Gary) Micek of Irvine, Calif., and Kristi (Ron) Chamber of Simi Valley, Calif.; grandchildren; brother Jay (Ann) Peters of North Bend and numerous nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial was held on May 3 at the St. Peter Claver Catholic Church.

Kimberly Kay “Kim” Byrd of North Bend passed away April 11 at her home.
She is survived by her husband Eric; sons Tanner and Travis Byrd; daughters Paula (Ryan) White and Jenna Byrd; parents Roger and Barbara Knudsen; sister Kathy Knudsen (Michelle Baade); sister-in-law Dee Knudsen; three grandchildren, Bridget, Isabelle, and Nolan White. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ken Knudsen.
Kim was born May 18, 1962, in Aberdeen, Wash., and grew up in Omaha and graduated from Benson High School. She married Eric P. Byrd on June 26, 1982.
Throughout her life she worked as a teller, a home sales rep, a manager, a lunch lady and a teacher; yet her most valued “jobs” were her family, friends, community and overall concern for people, no matter who you were. Her smile, kind words, welcoming actions, and determination to get to know you made her one in a million.
A memorial Mass will be 10 a.m., Monday, April 19, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. Memorial visitation will be on Sunday, April 18, from 4 to 7 p.m., and a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., all at the church. Family interment will be at Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha.

Vlasta A. Kavan of Fremont passed away April 9 at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
She was born on April 29, 1917, to Rudolph and Emma (Hines) Kavan on a farm east of Linwood. Vlasta had a sister Wilma and two brothers, Raymond and Arnold. She started her career as a school teacher, teaching at District 56 in 1936. After teaching at District 56 for two years at forty-five dollars a month, she started teaching at District 10 for sixty dollars a month for three years. She taught for two years in Morse Bluff and another two years in Schuyler. Vlasta worked for the Fremont Public Schools for thirty-seven years as a teacher and then a principal.
In 1949, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Midland College and earned this by attending summer school. In 1957, she received her Master of Education degree at the University of Nebraska, which was accomplished through attending night school and summer school classes.
In 1982, Vlasta retired from teaching. She was very involved at church and hospital volunteer work. She joined Altrusa, AAUW, retired teachers, and Pi Lambda Theta. Vlasta moved to Nye Legacy in 2011 after living at Nye Square for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Wilma (Adolph) Mares; brothers Raymond (Janet) Kavan and Arnold Kavan; and nieces Kristy Kavan and Kim Kavan.
Vlasta is survived by her sister-in-law Lorraine Kavan and many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 15, at the Presbyterian Church in Fremont. Rev. Earl Underwood will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Randol “Randy” R. Happel, of Lincoln passed away April 5. He was born on Nov. 28, 1955, in Fremont to Don and Donna (Aden) Happel.
Randy attended several rural elementary schools around Ames due to mergers. He attended Jr. High School in Scribner and graduated from North Bend Central in 1974. He attended University of Nebraska–Lincoln and graduated with a bachelors degree in journalism with an emphasis in public relations, English marketing and psychology. Randy was employed by several advertising agencies and in public relations in Houston, New York, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Des Moines, Omaha and finally Lincoln.
Randy was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Ridgeley Lutheran Church.
He was past President of the Cornhusker NAMA, Chapter Chair, and Student NAMA Careers Committee. Randy was an avid writer, effective communicator and was strong in his faith.
Randy is survived by his parents Don and Donna Happel and sister Kay Poppe, all of North Bend; nieces Kimberly (Zach) Thomsen, Natilee Plagge, Beverly (Ben Morris) Poppe; seven great nieces and nephews.
Randy was preceded in death by brother-in-law Norman Poppe.
His funeral service is 2 p.m., Friday, April 9, at St. Johns Ridgeley Lutheran Church. Visitation is on Thursday, April 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. The family is receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Burial will be in Ridgeley Cemetery.

David George Otte of Linwood passed away April 4 at his home, surrounded by his family after succumbing to cancer.
Dave was born Dec. 14, 1948, in Fremont to Mervin and Esther (Hansen) Otte. He grew up west of Morse Bluff on the farm and was a 1967 graduate of North Bend High School.
Dave graduated from Wayne State College with his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
On Oct. 29, 1971, he enlisted with the United States Air Force serving until Oct. 13, 1975, being stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha and then Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey, where he took his wife and two young children.
Dave married his high school sweetheart, Lois Meier, on Dec. 27, 1971, and to this union two children were born, Wendi (Otte) Emanuel and Matthew Otte. After their time in the Air Force, they returned to
Linwood to farm with Dave’s dad and brother Rollie Otte. He took a position as a rural mail carrier out of Linwood in 1976 and retired in 2010 after 34 years of service.
Dave enjoyed many hobbies, with aviation being one of his favorites.  After obtaining his private pilot’s license in 1985 he was fortunate enough to enter into a long partnership on a private plane. His true passion was his family, which included his seven grandchildren. Dave did not hesitate to be a part of their lives and attend whatever activities of theirs he could. Travel was a big part of Dave and Lois’ life.  They took many trips and really enjoyed their yearly vacations with the whole family.
Dave believed in his community and being involved.  He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge 119, Order of Eastern Star Ruth Chapter, all of North Bend, and the American Legion Post 340 in Morse Bluff. He held multiple offices in these organizations.  He was also a member of the AmVets, American Legion Riders and the Tangier Shriners.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Lois of Linwood; children Wendi (Ron) Emanuel of North Bend and Matt (Ranell) Otte of O’Neill, and seven grandchildren, Ethan and Marcus Emanuel, and William, Emma, Anna, Alex and Laura Otte; brother Rollie (Mary Ann) Otte of Morse Bluff; sisters Diane Powers of Omaha and Carol (George) Zwickel of Shenandoah, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law Karen Scott and brother-in-law Edward Scott.
A funeral service was April 8 at the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend. The Rev. Michael Hill officiated. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend following the service.

Betty L. Harney of Columbus died March 26 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at the McKown Funeral Home in Columbus.
Betty was born May 10, 1942, in North Bend to Gerald and Gladys (Maas) Tank. She grew up in North Bend and graduated from North Bend High School in 1960. She worked in various restaurants including Adams Café, Louie’s and the Husker House. She also worked at the Columbus Manor for over 30 years, later at Apogee and Emerson School Cafeteria.
She was married to Joe Burton. To this union a son, Jay, was born. Betty later married Dale Harney. She enjoyed kitties, cars, TV and shopping at WalMart and HyVee.
Betty is survived by her son Jay (Terri) Burton of Lincoln; grandsons Bryton, Camdyn, Drayton; brothers Mick Tank of North Bend, Rick (Connie Mimick) Tank of Silver Creek; stepchildren Mike (Monica) Harney of Clarkson, Cindy (Todd) Keenan of Stanton, Cheri Harney of Valley, David (Sharon) Harney of Arizona, Shawn (Monica) Harney of Kansas and numerous step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Joe and Dale and stepson Pat Harney.

Donald Lee Zvacek, 69, of North Bend, died March 23 at VA Medical Center in Omaha, succumbing to his seven-year battle with acute leukemia. Don was born Aug. 5, 1951, in Fremont to Rynold Zvacek and Jean McGahey.
He grew up in North Bend and was a 1969 graduate of North Bend High School. He served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1972 and was stationed in Korea.
After his service Don returned to North Bend, marrying Leora J. Jurgens on June 16, 1973, and moved to Fremont in 1973. They returned to North Bend in 1978 and divorced in 1983. Don married Sally L. Crocker in July, 18, 1988.
Don worked for Valmont Industries for 42 years from 1972 until retiring in 2014. Upon retirement he took a part time grounds keeping position at the North Bend Golf Course, staying until his death.
Don enjoyed many hobbies, bowling, golfing, fishing, woodworking, metalworking and even bird watching. He genuinely loved the outdoors. Don had an incredible work ethic, second to none.
Don is survived by his wife Sally of North Bend, children Michael (Tammy) Zvacek of North Bend, Kelly (Richard) Dezego of Mooresville, N.C., Matthew Zvacek of Boynton Beach, Fla., Mark (Lisa) Stork of Des Moines, Iowa, Laurie (Scott) Stork of Fort Collins, Colo., Tory (Paula) Larson of North Bend, Ryan (Marilyn) Larson; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; brother Rodney (Kay) Ruzicka of Schuyler, brother-in-law John Adams of Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Rynold Zvacek and Luella Zvacek; an infant sister and sister Carol Adams; also his beloved pet dogs Poochie, Sammy and Binky.
At his request his remains were cremated and there will be no funeral service.

Robert A. “Bob” Dauel of Malmo passed away Saturday, March 6, at Nye Legacy in Fremont. He was born Sept. 14, 1946, in North Bend to Arthur and Catherine (Wittmershouse) Dauel.
Bob grew up in the Malmo area and graduating from Cedar Bluffs High School in 1964. He farmed and was a truck driver. Bob was the owner and operator of Duck Creek Farms, Inc. and Dauel Trucking, Inc. He married Lori Codr on April 20, 1974, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Prague.
Bob was a member of the Malmo Volunteer Fire Department, and a former member of District 34 School Board, Farmers Union COOP Board, Union Cemetery Board, Saunders County Feeders Association, and Douglas Precinct Board.
He is survived by his wife Lori Dauel and fur baby Chloe of Malmo, sister Ardy (Bill) Rockemann of Davey and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be 10 a.m., Fri., March 12, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-7 p.m., also at Moser’s. Burial will be Union Cemetery in Malmo.

Lisa Ann Archer of Morse Bluff passed away March 5 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont.
She was born June 5, 1963, in El Paso, Texas, to Virgil “Keith” Stapp and Betty Mulligan.
Lisa graduated from Cozad High School in 1981. After high school she attended the North Platte Beauty Academy. Lisa became a licensed cosmetologist and worked at Backstage Review in Fremont and Shear Design in North Bend.
Lisa married Gary Archer on Oct. 1, 1994, in Cozad. They moved to Fremont after their marriage and moved to Morse Bluff in 1999.
She was fond of the outdoors and camping and had a passion for road tripping in her Jeep.
Lisa is survived by her husband Gary of Morse Bluff; sons Jeremy (Jeni) Archer of Fremont, Alex Archer of Prague; daughter Ashley Archer of Fremont; brothers Mark (Karri) Stapp of Cozad and John Stapp of Omaha; and five grandchildren: Joe, Jonathan, Jake, James and Lydia.
She was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws Ronald and Lucille Archer.
The celebration of life service will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, March 12, at the American Legion ZCBJ Hall in Morse Bluff.

Marcella A. “Sally” Kmiecik of Omaha, formerly of North Bend, passed away Feb. 9 at her daughter’s home in Morse Bluff. She was born Nov. 26, 1936, in Page to Daniel and Darlene (Smith) Snyder.
Marcella was raised in Orchard and graduated from Orchard High School. She married Joseph “Joe” Kmiecik on Nov. 22, 1954, in Plainview. After marriage they lived in Plainview until moving to Fremont in 1962, North Bend in 1964 and Omaha in 1975. She worked at Weldon Industries in North Bend from 1977-1987 and Planner Pads from 1988-2004 in Omaha.
She was a former member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend, Life Member of both the VFW Auxiliary 8223 of North Bend and Morse Bluff American Legion Auxiliary 340.
Marcella is survived by her sons Robert “Bob” Kmiecik, of Omaha and Todd (Helen) Kmiecik of Diberville, Miss. and Brett (Rhonda) Kmiecik of Yutan; daughters Beth (Ralph) Pflasterer of Lincoln, Patty (Terry) Heavican of Omaha, Karma (Dave) Amison of Morse Bluff and Stacy Vieth of Omaha; sisters-in-law Patty Snyder of Lincoln and Laura Kmiecik of Norfolk; 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Marvyl Lockwood and brother Milo Snyder.
Her memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 19, at St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff. The Rev. Dennis Hunt will officiate. Memorial visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be at Killian Cemetery at a later date.

Jane Coffman of Morse Bluff passed away Feb. 9 at home surrounded by her family.
Jane was born Feb. 1, 1929, to John A. and Crystal E. (Shannon) Moller in Indianapolis, Ind. She grew up in Muncie, Ind. and attended school there. Jane married Joseph R. Love in 1950 at Muncie and he later passed away. She worked at Kresge’s Dime Store for 14 years. Jane also tended bar for the Cork & Bottle for five years.
In 1965, she moved to Omaha. On Nov. 5, 1976, Jane married James K. Coffman. She worked at St. Joseph Center for Mental Health and retired after 26 years in 1992.
In 1997, Jane and her husband resided in Morse Bluff in the home they built from the ground up at the lake.
Jane was preceded death by her husbands, Joseph and James, son Christopher Love and brother Robert Leonard.
She is survived by her daughters Judy (Don) Dawson, Linda Dineen, Mary (Dennis) Johnson, Dona (Mike) Shearer, Ruth (John) Mahon, Betty Love, and Jean Slobodnic; sons John (Diane) Love and Joe (Annette)
Love; brother Ed Leonard; numerous grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
Her funeral service was Feb. 13 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. The Rev. Keith Rezac officiated.
Burial was at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

Larry F. Colgan passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 26 in Temecula, Calif. Larry was born on Feb. 12, 1948, in Omaha, to Leo and Vera (Wilkening) Colgan.
When Larry was 15, he moved to Tustin, Calif., to live with his older brother Albert. He graduated in 1966 from Tustin High School. He joined the United States Army in 1968 and specialized in field artillery and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, in Fort Bragg, N.C. After his military service, he attended Rio Hondo Community College and earned his degree in fire science.
Larry married Jerri Clayton in 1971 in Tustin. To this union four children born: Tracy, Christopher, David and Michael.
Larry joined the California Department of Forestry and worked as firefighter. He later joined the Orange County Fire Authority where he worked for 39 years, retiring as a fire captain.
In 2000, he married Sandra Beresford. Larry enjoyed his family, friends, church, playing canasta, traveling and enjoying quiet evenings in the home they built together in Fallbrook, Calif. His grandchildren were always a priority and he attended ball games, swim meets, FFA shows, beauty pageants and found a new interest in trains with his grandson, Kieran.
Larry was a member of North Coast Church, and was a Sunday greeter and a coffee server.
He is survived by his wife Sandy; daughters Tracy (Jason) Ewig of Fallbrook, Calif; Kim (Jerry) Schnitz of Bullhead City, Ariz.; sons Christopher (Andrea) of Fallbrook, Calif.; David (Laina) of Oceanside, Calif.; Michael (Naryssa) of Temecula, Calif.; Jeff (Betty) Beresford of Pinon Hills, Calif.; brothers Jim (Alice) Colgan of Fremont; John (Agnes) Colgan of North Bend; Thomas (Addie) Colgan of Oceanside, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Larry was preceded in death by his sister Annette Wilson and brothers Albert and Robert.
A memorial service will be held at North Coast Church in Vista, Calif., on Saturday, June 12, with a graveside service at Woodland Memorial Cemetery in North Bend on Oct. 16, 2021.

Former Hastings resident Dr. James Patrick “Jim” Widhelm, 71, passed away Jan. 14, in Ardmore, Okla., surrounded by his family.
Jim was born July 24, 1949, in Columbus to Herman J. and Elizabeth Ann (O’Hare) Widhelm. He was a 1967 graduate of North Bend High School and received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer Chiropractic College in 1981. Jim served in the National Guard from 1971-1977. He married Kay Loghry on May 13, 1972, in Kearney.
Jim was a chiropractor and owned Widhelm Chiropractic Clinic in Hastings for 33 years. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator, and Eagle Scouts. Jim enjoyed biking, sunsets, playing his guitar, and running. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was passionate about helping others heal naturally.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Elizabeth Widhelm of North Bend. Survivors include wife Kay; sons Chris (Jennifer) Widhelm, Dallas, Tex., Eric (Ashton) Widhelm, Ardmore, Okla.; daughter Stacie Widhelm, Hastings; grandchildren Mikayla, Kellen, Reese, Ashanti, Lilliana, Skylar, Hudson, Holden, Crew, Creed; siblings Larry Widhelm (Debra Van de Taeye), Kauai, Hawaii, Robert (Rita) Widhelm, Lincoln, Janet (Murray) Eaton, Gold Hill, Colo., uncle Joe (Helen) Widhelm, Fremont; and many other family members.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. Thur., Jan. 21, at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian. Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan.22, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings with the Revs. Jeremy Hazuka and Thomas Brouillette officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. The service will be live-streamed on St. Michael’s Catholic Church’s Facebook page. Maria Emanuel passed away at her home in Beemer on Jan. 14.
Marihelena Emanuel was born on Sept. 4, 1945, to Francis and Vera (Degner) Hetherington in Omaha. She grew up in Omaha attending Our Lady of Lourdes School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1963. Maria went on to attend St. Mary’s College and St. Joseph’s Radiology School in Omaha.
On April 20, 1968, Maria was united in marriage to Wayne Emanuel at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Omaha. The couple lived on a farm near Webster before moving to Beemer. Maria enjoyed working as a Radiology Technician for Drs. Scherer and Chadek in West Point, Faith Regional Health Services and the Pender Community Hospital for 44 years before retiring in 2013.
She was an avid Scrabble player, loved the outdoors and spending time with her family on the water, fishing and boating. Maria treasured her family and was enamored by her grandchildren. She was also a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and its Altar Society.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial for Maria Emanuel will be on Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Beemer. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, rural Scribner. Minnick Funeral Home in West Point is assisting with the arrangements.

George R. Anderson of Fremont, formerly of North Bend, passed away Jan. 10 in Omaha. He was born on April 2, 1950, in Wahoo, to Henry and Olga (McColley) Anderson. George grew up in Colon and attended Wahoo Public Schools. Following graduation he attended Northeast Community College. He married Paula Johnston on June 22, 1973, at Wahoo Presbyterian Church.
George was a welder for Valmont Industries and later a Building Materials Manager at Menards until he retired in 2011. He enjoyed fishing, reading, wildlife, Nebraska football and will be remembered for “starting” projects.
George is survived by his daughters Jessica (Scott) Wilson of Omaha and Stephanie (Chris) Hansen of Lincoln; ex-wife Paula Anderson; brother Charles Anderson; and four grandchildren: Brooke, Jordyn, Caden and Cloe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers T.J., Hank and Louie.
Private graveside services will be held Friday, Jan. 15, at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend. Visitation in Fremont, will be Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel from 5-7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Colette M. Feala of North Bend passed away Jan. 9 in Fremont. She was born on Dec. 23, 1930, in Dodge County to Francis and Edna (Dunker) Emanuel.
Colette graduated from North Bend High School in 1948. She taught school for a short time after graduation. Colette married Richard “Dick” Feala on June 15, 1951, in Omaha. They resided in rural North Bend and moved in to North Bend in 1962. After raising her family, Colette went back to work for OPPD as a secretary and home economist. She retired from OPPD in 1997.
Colette was a volunteer for the elementary school, a little league baseball coach, an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the Altar Society, a member of the
funeral lunch committee and led rosary services at Birchwood Manor Nursing Home. She enjoyed softball, bowling, playing cards, gardening and had many sewing projects including dresses and wedding gowns. Colette was a Husker fan and a committed blood donor.
Colette is survived by her sons Jay (Sheri) Feala of Gretna, Tom Feala of North Bend, Richard Feala of Omaha; daughters Mary (Joe) Borsh of Plano, Texas, Patty Feala, Theresa (Brian) Stubbs all of Kearney, Peggy Cooke of Lenox, Mass.; sisters-in-law Veronica Emanuel and Mary Emanuel both of North Bend, Susan Emanuel of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Colette was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dick; brothers Gene Emanuel, Dennis Emanuel, Mark Emanuel and sister-in-law Joan Emanuel.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 15, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic
Church in North Bend. Visitation will be at the church is 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Arnold J. Hines, formerly of Morse Bluff, passed away Jan. 2, at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont.
Arnold was born March 28, 1931, to Joseph and Helen (Vanek) Hines on a farm south of Morse Bluff. He graduated from Prague High School in 1948, then farmed until his duty in the Marines from 1951-1953.
On May 26, 1956, he married Donna Curda at the Presbyterian Church in Prague. The couple lived in Prague seven years, until moving to the family farm near Morse Bluff in 1963, where they raised crops and hogs. Arnold was a member of Morse Bluff American Legion Post 340.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Donna on Feb. 16, 2020, brother-in-law Jim Fencl and infant grandson Samuel Minarick.
Arnold is survived by his sister Ruby Fencl of Elkhorn, twin daughters Sharen (Steve) Minarick of Morse Bluff and Karen (Tim) Cech of Rochelle, Ill.; sons Allen (Linda) Hines of Lincoln and Greg (Maria) Hines of Morse Bluff; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 8, at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Chaplain Scott Jensen will officiate.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., with the use of masks and proper social distancing.
Burial will be at Killian Cemetery near Morse Bluff.
